For the last two years, since September 2012, Devanee (then 11) has been singing with Clearlakes Chorale in Wolfeboro. Last weekend was her 4th public concert weekend with them — she also having taken part in their Christmas outreach programs.

Well as of this Summer she will also be singing with the Great Waters Festival Chorus.

We are chuffed. As with Clearlakes it will fall on me to take her to all the rehearsals but that is OK since I get to enjoy listening to some wonderful music and meeting some great people.

“Great Waters” had not been on our radar till now. There is only so much we can do — especially in the Summer.

About 6 weeks ago when I took Devanee for her weekly Clearlakes practices on a Thursday evening one of the Tenors, who we knew (as we do nearly all the Clearlakes singers), came over to talk to me with a sheaf of papers. The papers were about ‘Great Waters’. He a singer of great renown had been singing with Clearlakes, Great Waters and a Barber Shop Group for many, many years.

He said that he would like to see Devanee sing with Great Waters at the July Festival Chorus. Many at Clearlakes think that Devanee is a good soprano (for her age) and has potential. This gentleman, a very kindly soul, had greased all the skids at ‘Great Waters’ already. He had told them about her and even made sure that she would get a full ‘scholarship’ to pay for all the fees and music etc. All I had to do, if we were interested, was to fill in the forms.

We thought it was a great idea. I filled in the forms. Devanee had to write a short essay. We sent in the forms. I made a phone call. Yes, yes. It was true. They knew about Devanee. Yes, she would get a scholarship. Wow.

Today she got has acceptance letter and the book of music.

Well looks like I will be involved with “Great Waters” in much the way that I am with Clearlakes. That should be fun.

So stay tuned. Of course I will be doing posts about “Great Waters”.

They got Gordon Lightfoot playing for them on July 11, 2014. I like Gordon. My son’s middle name is Gordon — but he is named after Greenidge rather than Lightfoot. I have seen Lightfoot in concert. Long time ago. 1980. In an open air amphitheater in Phoenix, Arizona. First real concert I had attended in the U.S. It was a blast. All these planes flying overhead. Huge arena. It was June or July. It was hot. It was a great concert.

Contrary to the very cultivated image I project and as such what most think about me, equanimity is my constant handmaiden — especially now that I am in my dotage. The days when I had great trouble dealing with idiots is long gone. It is difficult to get me to raise my hackles in public. Some attribute that for my pathological need to always be in control of MYSELF! That said I do have a spectacular temper. But luckily for all I only erupt very occasionally and I try to keep it down to once a year — if I can. Yep, it is that control thing.

But, one thing that does get my hackles up, THOUGH you will never see it, is when people ask me if I am Indian or worse still assume I am Indian. That really gets under my skin. My pet first response is: ‘No. No. I am not Indian. I am not good looking enough to be Indian’. As you must know and as Bollywood makes a point of highlighting, all Indians, by definition, are good looking.

So, though I hate to be thought of as Indian, I love Indians. They are a riot.

When I saw this I was not in any way surprised. That is what I expect of Indians.

Yes, I have ‘lived’ in India — but not full time. During 1969 to 1971 I used to go to New Delhi from London, during school breaks, at Christmas and in the Summer. I got my first driving license in India. But, I am NOT Indian. I used to drive around New Delhi, on my own. That is why I can drive anywhere in the world and it doesn’t faze me. After New Delhi tackling the Arc de Triomphe (Étoile) in Paris was pas de probleme. One of my favorite sites in New Delhi and I would ALWAYS have to stop and watch was people having their fortunes told by a Holy Cow! Holy Cow! Yes. The cow would paw the ground to convey her message. Told you. Indians are priceless.

Jokes apart, they are, by and large, very nice people. Just priceless.

Yola (Website Creation) Not Truthful About Phone Support & ‘New’ Text Widget Is Beyond Flaccid.

I have raved about Yola in the past and to be fair most of what I had said about them still holds.

Yola does work. And in its own plodding way works well. So you can’t take that away from them, I won’t.

My BIGGEST gripe with them is that they are LYING about their phone support. That is bad. Don’t claim to have phone support IF YOU DON’T! That is unethical. Just be honest and admit that you don’t have the resources to provide phone support. We will understand.

A few weeks ago I used to Yola to create, from scratch, a professional 5-page Website for a friend. It was for his rather prestigious business. Since the goal was that he would maintain the Website once I had it in place I wanted to make it as user friendly as possible. So after much cogitating and repeated visits to Wix.com I ended up getting him a Yola SILVER package for $99/year.

Yes, I put together a fairly decent Website.

So given that I had SILVER I really should have had access to ‘Premium Phone Support‘. I never did and that did not make me happy.

Everytime I tried I got a message saying that it was not available at the time. I was calling during normal working hours M-F — like 2pm Eastern on a Monday.

They don’t even have a LIVE Web chat support. Compare and contrast with my new now that duped us. They don’t promise phone support but has awesome Chat support. I can live with that.

Yola’s much ballyhooed, albeit only by them, new Text Widget is PATHETIC! Beyond flaccid. GIANT step backwards. Regressive.

On my own (Bronze) account, given that I had set it up in November, I still get to use the OLD, much more powerful and flexible, Text widget.

In the new Silver account I set up for my friend I only get the NEW flaccid widget.

I understand the motives BUT whoever designed that widget was indubitably on drugs — and the Yola management that ‘bought it’ obviously has proved that they are clueless.

With the new widget YOU can’t even change TEXT color! Come on.

AND depending on the STYLE you chose you may not even get to choose the text color for the entire site.

That is STUPID. Plus I want the option to change FONT COLORS.

Also LINKS have been CRIPPLED.

With images YOU can NO LONGER request that a link opens in a new Window! That is BAD. We should have the option.

Also automatic font color changing when there is an embedded link does not always work. Temperamental.

Bottom line: Yola works BUT is going backwards. I think they are in financial trouble. Heads Up. Be very careful before you signup with Yola. 

I will be visiting Wix.com again in the next couple of months!

The link was sent to me from a friend who lives in Santa Barbara.

My friend’s comment to my inquiry whether they were OK (given that they are a very active and large family): “Yes, Thanks for asking, check out the last YouTube video for the 22 year old shooter who could not get laid since puberty despite in his view, being a “Alpha Male” and “Supreme Gentleman””.

This is BEYOND crazy.

Didn’t anybody REPORT this video to the police! Nothing on Facebook? Twitter?

I have to assume that a bunch of folks could be thought as being complicit.
