Those of you who have followed this blog are of course familiar with my friend Randy Kaplan, ‘The King Of Signed Baseballs‘. Check my other posts on Randy’s amazing collection.

Randy contacted me, online, maybe 6 years ago asking me how he can reach into the Vatican. We have collaborated since then,

Randy has done amazingly well. His baseball collection is now legendary.

He received this recently and I just got his e-mail, with the picture, within the hour.

Quite the signature.

Well done Randy. You ARE the MAN.

Amtrak Came To Be This Day 46 Years Ago — May 1, 1971.

by Anura Guruge

Taken by me, in August 2016, in Mystic, CT, from the water, with a rented Nikon D500. Attribution will be enforced.

THIS is a MUST Watch!

For all its faults and shortcomings it is ALL we have!

We have taken Amtrak a fair number of times to New York City and it isn’t that bad. The furthest I have been in Philadelphia to Boston.

Just wish they were FASTER!

I am sorry BUT this always amuses me. As some of you know this is NOT the first time I have been here. But, it is CUTE and I am glad. To be fair, I have made the list, with some of my books, even when folks had to pay for them.

Anywho, what is important is that folks are getting access to the book.

As I said in the Preface I did not write this book in the hope of making any money. My pricing reflects that.

So enjoy. Thanks.

‘The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks’ (2017) Movie: Powerful, CONFUSING & Disturbing.

by Anura Guruge

I had never heard of this movie, and was slightly distressed to realize that I had no familiarity, whatsoever, with the type of cell that was being talked about and why such cells were so important.

HBO aired it a few weekends ago as their Saturday night ‘feature’ and I DVRed it because of that — and we watched it, over a couple of nights, earlier this week.

That Oprah starred in it mattered nowt to I, since I can ‘take her, or leave her‘ and she is not somebody I go ga-ga about.

It was an interesting, intriguing and powerful movie — and gave me another revealing perspective into black lives in the 1950s.

I found the start of the movie — about the cells very confusing and had to go back and watch it again. I still think that they don’t explain all the implications that well — and IF I had the time I would LOVE to read the book. The book is supposed to be very good.

The supposed reaction and behavior of the family was also very confusing, to say the least, and, moreover, very disturbing.

They all came across as being totally wacky in one way or another.

They just didn’t seem to be able to handle the notion that Johns Hopkins had taken some cells from their mother — and that these cells were still dividing and thus continuing to ‘live’. Just seemed way to overblown and dramatic. I have to say it portrayed this family, which happens to be black, in a rather bad light. It sure will confirm some stereotypes.

Definitely worth watching it. Will make you ponder and want to find out more. Glad I watched it. Learned quite a bit and that is always a good thing.
