Boston Chinatown “Chinese New Year 2018” Dragon Parades Are Sunday, Feb. 25 — BUT, Heavy Rain.

by Anura Guruge

In past years we have had BLIZZARDS — e.g., 2013 for the Chinatown New Year.

This year, for Boston, it is heavy rain, 5″ – 8″ snow for us.

The Dragon Parades won’t be fun in the rain.

Yes, you could watch them from a restaurant, but that is NOT much fun.

Plus, Chinatown isn’t exactly car friendly and parking, even outside of New Year, is hard. So, you really need to walk.

So, a heads up. If you plan to go on Sunday you will get soaked.

They are serving Dim Sum, at China Pearl, on Saturday. I called and checked.

I can’t, however, get any sense as to whether there will be any Dragon Parades on Saturday. I SUSPECT that there might be — because of the Sunday rain. But, I could be wrong.

Boston is my nearest BIG city. I am know stranger to Boston and I visit quite often and have spent a HUGE amount of time in Boston over the last three decades.

I was genuinely worried about what could have happened in Boston today.

Watching this in on TV, live, was so heartening, so encouraging — a SEA of protestors. I am so PROUD, so grateful. This is what I expected of Boston, and Boston did NOT let me down.

THANK YOU, Boston.

Boston Proud.

“Huggins Fair 2017”, Wolfeboro, N.H. Will Be On Friday, August 4 & Saturday, August 5.

by Anura Guruge

Note, it is, by tradition, strictly a Friday & Saturday event; first Friday of August, rain, shine, hail or hurricane. If you go on Sunday all you will find these days are empty tents. Up until 6 – 7 years ago the huge book tent would still have all the unsold books in it and you were encouraged to take as many away — for free. Now they have exchange students from abroad, staying at Brewster over the Summer, come and clear the books away Saturday night.

Unless it is beyond torrential rains we will be there late on Saturday, as we always are — even in heavy downpours.

See you there.

Per Kellie Troendle, CPRP, Alton’s Parks and Recreation Director, who sent me an e-mail BECAUSE she knows that so many of you rely on me for this type of information.

“Annie and the Orphans will not play at the Bandstand tonight, August 13 due to predicted rain.  Annie and the Orphans are re-scheduled to perform on Sunday, August 14 from 5-7pm at the Alton Bay Bandstand, weather permitting”.

NOTE 5pm (as opposed to customary 7pm) START.

Weather Permitting —
and it looks promising.

Alton, N.H. “Old Home Week”: Saturday, August 13, 2016 Fireworks Postponed, “Annie and the Orphans” Up In The Air.

Suffice to say the weather for Saturday, August 13, 2016, in Alton, is going to be unsettled. See weather forecast below.

Kellie Troendle, CPRP, Alton’s Parks and Recreation Director, has informed me by e-mail that: “Old Home Week Fireworks are postponed due to predicted inclement weather. The rescheduled date is Saturday, August 27 with a rain date of Sunday, August 28. 9:00pm, Alton Bay”.

So fireworks pushed back 2-weeks. [This has happened before, e.g., 2014 July 4th fireworks.]

We will NOT know about “Annie and the Orphans” till around NOON tomorrow — yes, Saturday, August 13 (the day).

IF rescheduled it will most likely be the next day — i.e., Sunday, August 14, 2016.

I will, of course, keep you posted.

See above ….

“Huggins Street Fair”, Wolfeboro, New Hampshire — Saturday, August 6, 2016.

I have been going to the “Huggins Fair” (now called the “Street Fair” though it is held, entirely, on a field) since 1992 — with at most 3 or 4 exceptions due to calendar conflicts. In the early days, when I did a LOT of toy shopping for the kids, we used to get there prior to the Friday morning opening and spend quite a few hours at the fair on both Friday and Saturday. I also used to buy a LOT of books (and by that I mean a few boxes at a time). Those days are now long gone.

Over the last 6 or 7 years we just go late on Saturday evening — basically to ‘treasure hunt’ when everything is on ‘SALE’. As the kids point out we are not looking for anything in particular — just things that catch our eyes (and that is also the case with books). This year, per plan, we got there just as 6pm — just in time for a sizable shower. But that was OK. However, the inclement weather scheduled for the evening had kept the crowds away. It was the QUIETEST I have ever seen this delightful Fair — but it was still, as always, lively and fun.

I was ULTRA selective in the books I picked up. Just a dozen I think — and 4 of them were pope books. I am now getting books for posterity — for my library WHEN I AM GONE! Has to be my old age. Doesn’t bother me. Not sure who will take the books BUT I plan to leave some good books for the discerning. I got some good (i.e., ‘rare’) books. That was all I got — plus two $1 hot dogs sans the buns. I spent $4. Teischan spent $3 — $2 on a HUGE cup of ice cream. Deanna might have spent a bit more. Way, WAY down from what we usually spend — and it is a good cause. I think we spent $60 last year and I normally budget $100 for the fair. Nonetheless we had a good time. Kind of strange that we did NOT buy any nicknacks! Usually we spend about 2 hours on Sunday sorting out all the ‘treasures’ we picked up. Not this year.
