I heard on the local New Hampshire news last night (i.e., on WMUR) that foliage has started ‘up North’. Well we have foliage in the Lakes Region too. This was at the Alton Rotary (Circle) today. Complete trees turning color. The temperature has dropped into the 50s°F the last three night. That will sure get the foliage going.

Lord Mountbatten, The Last Viceroy Of India, Was Tragically Assassinated This Day 38-Years Ago; August 27, 1979.

Romsey Abbey, Hants, where he is buried. One of my favorite Abbeys. Very intimate and serene.

“Broadlands” the family Country House in Romsey, Hants. Used to visit it often. One of my adoptive mother’s favorite destinations in England.

This was CLOSE TO HOME in many respects. Romsey, Hants. — where he would be buried and the location of their Country Home — was but 4 miles from where I used to work at IBM.

I also liked and respected Mountbatten. He was quite the guy and a good one at that.

Suffice to say I was NOT a fan of the IRA. This was a sad day.

I Left Ceylon This Day — 50-Years Ago; August 27, 1967.

Those of you who have been kindly (and patiently) following this blog for years may recall that every August 27 I do do a post on the significance of this day in my life.

Wow. 50-year anniversary. As I get older the percentage of my life I spent in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) shrinks.

I am not sure what I thought 50-years ago when I left Ceylon. I am not sure I had given any thought to whether I would come back. That I have gone back so little tells its own story. Plus, as I emphasized in the graphic above I do NOT think of Ceylon/Sri Lanka as ‘Home’! Home, to I, is very definitely Britain. I would still very much like to go back …

Left from Katunayake Airport which in 1967 was pretty small — just one, ‘one-room’ building. Quite a few people came to see us off. It was night. I think the flight left around 9pm. We left on a Pan Am 707. My first time in a jet — though I had flown quite a bit on DC-3s. I had always liked the 707 and it is still one of my favorite planes today.

Wow. 50-years & 43-years, to the day, I walked into IBM!

Titian, THE GREAT Renaissance Artist, After Whom My ‘Teischan’ Is Named, Died This Day 441-Years Ago; August 27, 1576.

Tiziano Vecellio, Titian, suffice to say is one of my all time favorite artists. There are 5 Italian Renaissance artist that I consider DIVINE and beyond compare: Michelangelo, RaphaelTitian, Sandro Botticelli & Da Vinci.

When I learned in 2005 that we were going to have a baby I wanted the baby to be named after ONE of these five GREATS — albeit with a unisex name since I do not believe in learning about a baby’s gender before they are born. That I picked Titian in the end speaks volume. As far as I am concerned he was the ‘most normal‘ of the five in terms of ‘family values‘ plus I like the range and variety of his work. As I tell people, I, however, faced a problem with the name ‘Titian’. I did NOT want a child whose name began with ‘Tit’. I knew that they would NOT thank me for that. Hence, Teischan — ideally pronounced as close to Titian. Plus, teischan.com was readily available and I had registered it 4-months ahead of her birth. I had the Website up and running, with pictures of her birth, 12-hours after she was born — on the same day.

A framed copy of this Titian classic has hung in Teischan’s room ever since she was born.

Mars Made Its Closest Approach To Earth In Over 60,000 Years, This Day 14-Years Ago; August 27, 2003.

I think I remember this. 2003 was a busy year.

Wow, closest in 60,000 years. No that is NOT a typo. That is real. Pretty amazing. There have been quite few Internet HOAXES about close approaches of Mars since then — but they are what they are, hoaxes and nothing else.

Emperor Haile Selassie I, The Messiah To The Rastas, Died This Day 42-Years Ago; August 27, 1975.

by Anura Guruge

Link to original “New York Times” article.

We were talking about Haile Selassie just 35-days ago, i.e., on July 23, 2017, since that was the anniversary of his birthdate.

Today, August 27th is the anniversary of his death, in 1975. He was 83-years old. There had been a military coup in 11-months earlier. Haile Selassie had been imprisoned. He died while in prison and some believe, to this day, that he was assassinated. So, today spare a thought for a man who went by the title: His Imperial Majesty the King of Kings of Ethiopia, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Elect of God.
