On Saturday night, once I had established that MetroCast managed to maintain my download bandwidth above 70Mbps, I set about making arrangements to install our new home network, TP-Link centric, based on the latest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11 AC (AC 1900). Ordered the three TP-Link boxes Sunday from Amazon.

They were scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday. Made arrangements with my computer buddy Shane Selling to come around early evening to install the network.

Went well. Amazon, via FedEx, delivered at 9:10 am in the morning. I was still in bed.

I had everything setup, in place, wired and powered up — ready to go. Around 4:30 pm I called up and cancelled the two TDS Fiber connections. Kind of sad. They had served us well — by and large. I plan to go back as soon as they have Gigabit Ethernet in Alton. I plan to be the first customer in Alton with Gigabit. [Actually just sent TDS e-mail a few minutes ago telling them of this.]

Shane arrived at 4:40. By 5:30 we had a working network. The TP-Link Wi-Fi is pretty amazing. My IPTV will work without the Range Extender. But, I had already bought one and it did boost the signal by 6%. 6% is 6%. So we are using it though Shane is laughing. He thinks I am way too fussy about my network. I am. I spend a lot of time on it.

So now at the mercy of MetroCast. Hope I do not live to rue that decision. In 90 days TDS will treat me as a new customer for Internet. I might get a $15 fiber connection as a backup. But that is 90 days out.

I will, of course, keep you posted. TP-Link boxes are a joy to work with. Great aesthetics. Well packaged. Decent instructions. Appear to work. Plus very competitive prices.

After everything was done, and we watched some cricket we ate a very nice ham and then Shane had us in awe by flying Teischan’s UDI U818A Quadcopter Drone inside the house with immaculate control. That was a treat. Good evening. We were chatting till past 11 pm. Hence the lack of posts. But I have my priorities right.
