Yes, we have all become very fond of ‘Vera’ — but Teischan (13, as of yesterday) just ADORES the series. She gets like that … “Downton Abbey“, “Mr. Selfridge”, “Victoria“, “Place to Call Home” etc.

So, when I discovered that Britbox had more ‘Vera‘ episodes I really couldn’t deprive her. So, this was my birthday present to her — though she says that I am just saying that, and I wanted it too. {She, as usual, may have a point.} At $6/month it isn’t as if it will break the bank.

Just watched one episode of ‘Vera’. No problems. Basically the same quality as ‘Acorn‘. So, that is good.

Lot of stuff. Haven’t really browsed all of it. But, will keep you posted.

God save the Queen.

“A Place To Call Home”, The Australian “Downton Abbey”, NEW Season 6 + New Season 5 Episodes.

by Anura Guruge

On “Acorn TV” in the U.S. acorn.tv/placetocallhome/series6

I had NOT checked ‘Acorn TV‘, on my Roku 3, for a couple of months. We have had plethora of other TV to watch during ‘Family TV hour’.

Last night, on a whim, I decided to check ‘Acorn’.

A Place to Call Home” Series 6 was being featured. That pleased me no end. I had thought that it would not be here till Thanksgiving, as was the case with Series 5 last year. I am glad I was wrong.

So, this evening we sat back and got ready to enjoy Series 6 Episode 1.

But, when they did their usual “Previously …” we were LOST. We didn’t remember any of what they were talking about. So, we went back to Series 5. Looks like there are 5 episodes we had missed, viz., 8 – 12. Not sure how that was possible. We watched Episodes 1 – 7 every week and we would have gone back for 8. My feeling is that they were added later.

NOT complaining. More to watch. And that is always a good thing with this addictive show. It really is worth watching. So many clever twists and turns.

So, we are happy. Especially Teischan. She loves it.

“Ladies in Lavender” Movie (2004) — Quaint, V. British, Violin Extravaganza & Very Watchable.

by Anura Guruge

The Full Movie, for FREE, on YouTube!

Found it on Amazon Prime for free. It was British, had Judi Dench and looked interesting. Did I already mention that it was also FREE.

That Maggie Smith, who we identify as being from “Downton Abbey” was a bonus.

It was very watchable, quaint and nicely captured the 1940 feel. Some superb pictures of the Cornwall coast. The violin music was impressive,

Improbable story! Could not have happened. Just ahead of WWII and he is a German-speaking Pole. But, an easy enough yarn to relax through. Not taxing. Just mellow.

If you are into quaint, 1940s British dramas — this is for you. Plus, two GREAT ladies. You can’t go wrong. Read about the movie and the two ladies on IMDb.com. Interesting. They are nearly twins.

“A Place To Call Home”, The Australian “Downton Abbey”, Season 5 Is Nail Bitingly Gripping.

by Anura Guruge

I have never watched Soap Operas so I don’t know how intense they get, BUT Season 5 of ‘A Place To Call Home‘, now on Acorn TV, is gripping beyond anything I have seen on late.

Puts “Indian Summers” to shame, and “Downton Abbey“, with all of its exquisitely crafted drama, never, in my opinion, had so many suspenseful storylines in parallel. Whoever the writers are they are GOOD. Definitely knows their craft and audience. Bravo. Yes, of course, there are a few patches when the storyline and dialogue sags. But, that is to be expected.

Australians should be proud.

I, confess. Until I came across ‘A Place To Call Home‘, which I have been hooked on since Season 1, I thought that the only good TV that the Aussies could produce was live cricket! Now I know better.

“A Place To Call Home”, The Australian “Downton Abbey”, Season 5 Premieres On “Acorn TV” On Thanksgiving 2017.

We are addicted to this show and have hungrily watched each and every episode, sometimes 2 or 3 at a sitting. Teischan went back over the Summer and watched it ALL — all over again — on her own.

We discovered this Australian series, serendipitously, on ‘Acorn TV‘ (on our Roku), in 2015 and were hooked as of Episode 1. We think of it as an Australian “Downton Abbey“. Good storyline. Has you both rooting for various characters and in ‘suspenders’. Very watchable.

Teischan will be so excited.

Kind of cute. Season 4, last year, also premiered on Thanksgiving Day (albeit 2016). So, Acorn is kind of teasing us. That is OK.

This made my day. Yippeee!

It may be a tad too dark, intense and ‘adult in bits’ for some. Definitely not ‘Downton Abbey‘.

If you like that period, Paris, 1940s photography and some LUSCIOUS 2017 videography with the most vivid reds you are ever likely to see, this will appeal (though there may still be scenes that you might not appreciate).

Given all the time I have spent in Paris (which means that most of the places shown are familiar) and my familiarity with French/Paris history during and after WW II (much of it learnt from the excellent book “Is Paris Burning?“, I found it interesting. All loved the scenes of the American photographer using a Rolleiflex to take black-and-white images.

If you are into this stuff you might want to give it a try.

“The Good Karma Hospital”, ITV Series, Now On “Acorn TV”, Shot In Sri Lanka Though Set In Southern India!

by Anura Guruge

Click to access IMDb.com listing for the ITV Series.

It was one of the new shows available on ‘Acorn TV‘ (i.e., British shows) on the Roku. I was attracted to it just by its title — since it immediately brought to mind ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. Well it is NOWHERE close to being that funny — BUT to be fair, it is not meant to be. It is more of a (somewhat obvious, predictable and stereotyped) romance-drama. It is OK. Teischan finds it ‘acceptable’ and I found it HOPING that she would like it. “Mrs. Hughes” from ‘Downton Abbey‘ made and appearance and that was a bonus.

Right from the start the scenery, especially the BEACHES, reminded me of CeylonSri Lanka — especially those around Galle that I was extremely conversant with during my 14-years there. But, having also been to India, multiple times, I knew that the southwest coast of Southern India was similar. The catamaran boats shown also reminded me of Sri Lanka ….

Then I checked IMDb.com. It was indeed shot in Sri Lanka! Wow. Now I will have to tell Teischan.
