Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk II WAY TOO Overpriced For A “Four Thirds” Camera.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk II has some pretty impressive specs. BUT in the end it is still a “Four Thirds” camera and sensor size does matter.
This is STUPID pricing.
$400 more than the Fuji X-T2 and the Fuji is an APS-C sensor.
Same pricing as the Nikon D500.
I would pay $2,000, body only, for for a Nikon D500. But for a “Four Thirds” Olympus.
I think it is at least $200 overpriced.
Not that I was thinking of getting one. I am STICKING with APS-C. Thanks.

My Latest Camera — An Argus C3
This is, by far, the MOST complicated camera I have touched in
the last 2 years. Makes the Nikon D500, that I recently rented,
feel like a toy. Not sure what kind of sensor it has or how
good its autofocus is.

It is an Argus C3. I don’t ever remember seeing one of these prior to today. It is called the ‘Brick’ and that is NOT just for its physical dimensions. It weighs MORE than a brick. WOW. We have forgotten how much mechanical cameras weighed. Feels SOLID. Just like holding a brick. A kind lady in Wolfeboro had in on Facebook — for free. Deanna contacted her. Belonged to her late husband. Came with the instruction booklet. Would be cool to put a roll of film and take some pictures. Wonder what ISO would work.

I would NOT be able to resist this — and I know myself better than anybody else. That reach?
I have realized that I love my 15-day old Nikon P900. Today is day 15 and that is crucial in that I bought it from BestBuy rather than Amazon, BuyDig or Cameta. They have a 30-day return policy; BestBuy but 15. [Actually I took the precaution (always the belt-and-braces person I am) of buying it with my Discover card. They do offer a 90-day $500 guarantee.] I have NOT returned the P900. I am keeping it. One the easiest cameras to use that I have encountered in the last 2 years. Easier than your average compact, point-and-shoot. Yes, I will write a detailed review soon. I have taken 2,812 ‘keepable’ pictures in those 15 days; at an average of 187/day.
A P900 with a 1″ would be WONDERFUL and it would be in the same class as my old Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 and the Sony RX10s that I evaluated ad nauseum and never bought. The redoubtable FZ1000 has a 16x zoom. This Nikon puppy would have 4.6 times MORE. 75x. Not as much as the 83x on the P900, but 75x with a 1″ sensor would be formidable.
Yes, I would get this Nikon the day it is available irrespective of what other cameras I currently have. Most likely by then I would have, at a minimum, the P900 and a Canon 80D or M5. I would get this and give away the P900. Smile.

Over the last 3 days I have come, mainly due to reading all the rumors about Canon’s ‘mirrorless‘ M5, I have come increasingly convinced that Canon’s ‘Dual Pixel AF‘ is what I really need — given my preference shoot ‘Live View’, i.e., LCD, due to my aging (and poor) eyes.
I have 90% (which is not a high percentage for I) convinced myself that I should just get a Canon 80D as my main camera for the next 12 months.
But, deep down I am such a proponent of ‘mirrorless’. It is ironic and interesting that the Nikon that I opted for and currently use, the Nikon P900, is a ‘mirrorless’!
The M5 if it delivers on the rumored specs and does come with a 18-50mm kit lens will work for me. IF the kit price really is $1,198 I will be laughing all the way … That, per what I have budgeted, will be a JOKE. But, I will not complain.
So stay tuned. I am fairly sure that there will be a Canon M5 or a D80 in my near future.

I will confess, with contrition, that I had NOT paid ENOUGH attention to Canon’s “Dual Pixel AF” because it was only available on 4 cameras — 3 of them ‘pretty’ old (in terms of today’s 12-month technology refresh cycle) and the 4th, the Canon 80D, was being touted as a mid-level DSLR.
But the recent spate of rumors about the soon to be announced Canon APS-C MIRRORLESS M5 got me digging into “Dual Pixel AF”.
Anybody who has been paying any attention to my 10 cameras in 2 years SAGA will know that brilliant AutoFocus is my Holy Grail — especially since my eyes, never that good, are getting older by the day. The reason I decided to get a Nikon D500, rather than the new Fuji X-T2 (which I lusted after for 9 months), was AF — nothing else.
But the D500’s AF prowess is ONLY in Viewfinder (VF) phase-detect mode. There is no phase-detect in Live View (i.e., LCD) mode. More and more I am opting to shoot LCD mode because I just tend to see better with both eyes open looking at a 3″ screen. 99% of the 2,594 pictures I have taken with my new Nikon P900 (which I am getting rather fond of) — in 10 days — have been in LCD mode!
Canon’s DUAL PIXEL AF will give me phase-detect in LCD mode.
I think I could live with the Canon 7D Mk II or possibly the 80D.
IF the M5 has good specs I could go with that — given my innate fondness for mirrorless cameras. I could also save myself quite a bit of money. I have no aversion to Canon. I had a Canon T3i for nearly a year and it is still in the family (for a refreshing change) in that Devanee has taken ownership of it.

Nikon P900 — A Good LCD Screen Protector, the ‘AFUNTA’.

I am a great believer in LCD screen protectors for cameras PROVIDED that they are hard glass.
The cheap, flimsy plastic ‘cling-film’ stuff drives me to distraction and I will never use them on any of my cameras.
But a GOOD GLASS protector makes sense. I would hate to damage the LCD per se.
I started looking around for spare batteries, chargers, straps and LCD screen protectors for the Nikon P900 BEFORE I bought the camera! That is what you get when you have bought 9 or 9 cameras within the space of 23 months. You learn the tricks. Have the accessories you need, at hand, BEFORE you get the camera.
The AFUNTA protectors (and there are two in the kit) came in a real neat, imitation wood box.
There were lots of instructions and supplies for cleaning the LCD before installation. I did NOT use any of that. I installed the AFUNTA to a virgin LCD as soon as I folded it open. Cleaned the AFUNTA with a Zeiss wipe afterwards and that was it.
Recommended.

Very first pictures from the Nikon P900 I picked up from BestBuy yesterday. These are images 01 to 38.
Took these in fully automatic iAuto mode. The two indoor pictures were taken without a flash.
I can just about live with these. Autofocus does have its limitations. I knew exactly what I was getting into with the P900. But the P900 costs less than the 200mm zoom for a Fuji. So …
This P900 will never be my main camera. I got it to get me into the Nikon mindset over the next 6 weeks. I just don’t have the mental bandwidth right now to deal with a Nikon D500 (given that I already spent 8-days with a rented one). In October I will get a D500. Till then I am just going to have a blast with the P900.
That is the plan. For all of my apparent madness there is always a method, in my mind, for my rashness.
