‘Acadia National Park’ Gets The Chance To ‘Acquire’ Iconic ‘Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse’ From Coast Guard.

The “National Park Service” (NPS) that is responsible for operating “Acadia National Park” and the U.S. Coast Guard, that currently owns the “Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse“, are BOTH U.S. Federal Agencies. As such the NPS will NOT have to buy this lighthouse per se. The ownership and control will be transferred from one agency to another.

The lighthouse is surrounded Acadia National Park land. It is a small island among the Park land — and you can see that in the above map, where Park land is shown in green.

But, POLITICS will play into this. The Donald Trump administration is crippling the NPS in terms of funds. Even if there is no money involved in buying the lighthouse there will be some cost associated with changing the signs, bringing the property up to NPS ‘codes’ etc — and then that of ongoing maintenance. In years past this would not have been an issue. The NPS would have somehow found the funding. Not in 2017 or 2018 under Trump.

If the NPS declines the generous offer the Coast Guard will put it up for sale! Most likely a local conservation group will try and buy it — and there is no shortage of money on that Island.

I will keep you posted.

We tried to visit the lighthouse last Sunday while we were at Acadia. There was a huge traffic jam. So we didn’t bother.
