I don’t know much about him BUT I do know that he changed the face and complexion of history with his conquest.

My adoptive father who was a big fan of steak tartare always claimed that it was Genghis Khan’s famous cavalry that had come up with it — them putting raw steaks under their saddles in the morning and then eating them later in the day, the only heat coming from the friction created between the saddle and the horse.

I was curious as to how big the Mongol Empire was at its height. Appears it was ONLY surpassed by ONE other Emphire — MY, glorious British Empire. {SMILE}

New Hampshire Libraries Out Of Solar Eclipse Glasses For Monday — As Are Stores!

by Anura Guruge

You might still be in luck with some of the other libraries.

Be careful with what you find in local stores. They might not be ‘good‘ (i.e., strong/dark) enough.

Might be getting too late for ordering online. But, you could try.

All the best. The skies over New Hampshire should be CLEAR for Monday’s PARTIAL solar eclipse over New Hampshire.

Weather Still Looking GOOD For August 21, 2017, Solar Eclipse Over New Hampshire.

by Anura Guruge

Forecast from wunderground.com.

With just 3-days to go the weather forecast for Monday’s PARTIAL solar eclipse over New Hampshire looks GOOD. Clear skies.

This forecast, this close to the day, is unlikely to change much (we hope). I think the weather will cooperate. So, fingers crossed.

Have you got your Eclipse glasses as yet or are YOU all set with some type of protection. (I can make a joke about that, BUT I will refrain).

The Sony Full-Frame FE 28-70mm (F/3.5-5.6) Zoom Is A Truly Dreadful Lens!

by Anura Guruge

Amazon listing — but AVOID like the plague.

I Traded In mine with Amazon, on August 17, 2017.

a very soft image with Sony FE 28-70mm zoom lens Anura Guruge Sony a7II

I got this kit lens, as a kit lens within a BUNDLE when I bought my Sony a7 II, from Cameta Camera, on May 10, 2017 (via Amazon).

I was familiar with the limitations of kit lenses and had read the reviews on this.

At $348 it is a CHEAP lens and that is exactly what it is. As I always do, I used an Excel Spreadsheet to price out all of my a7 II buying options … individually, in kit form and as bundles. The Cameta bundle was such that I was getting this kit lens for about $150. So, I knew that I could trade-it in and essentially be ‘quids in’ (as we say in in Britain).

It is a marginally OK lens and will occasionally take satisfying picture (or two). But, the autofocus (AF) HUNTS a lot, indoor colors have an strange tint and the lens, overall, tends to be soft.

Yes, I got Sony FE 24-240 (f/3.5-6.3) at the same time as the bundle BECAUSE I knew I needed as much reach as I could get. So, that made the 28-70mm kind of superfluous to requirements, though I had hoped that I might be able to use the smaller, MUCH LIGHTER lens when using the a7 II indoors. That never worked out. I do like the 24-240 though it also tends to be SOFT. AF, however, is much, much better.

So, just a heads up. You get what you pay for and as such the 28-70 is a cheap (and on the main nasty) lens. Sorry.

Amazon Still Profligate In Its Packaging.

EXACTLY as they arrived.

Nothing removed, nothing rearranged. Untouched.

This is CRAZY.

This is irresponsible.

It was not fragile. There was nothing to break. These could have been easily shipped in a padded envelope.

Waste of resources. Yes, the air doesn’t weigh much BUT the box takes up space on planes, trucks and in the USPS vehicles. Plus the cardboard (which, to be fair, we recycle).

I have complained before about Amazon (as you can see below), and I do so as HUGE fan, a loyal customer and above all a very-happy shareholder (of AMZN).

UPS, cleverly, tried to get Amazon to be better by changing their pricing to include package DIMENSIONS as well as weight. Well, Amazon doesn’t use UPS that much, anymore! This was sent via USPS.
