This are at least 16 (yes, sixteen) D-Day specific posts on this blog, not counting all those on ‘Churchill‘ and the ‘RAF‘. So, please check them out. They all contain painstakingly researched images or videos. You will be amply rewarded.

I am a great admirer of D-Day.

I always pause to reflect on this day, June 6, 1944 — 9-years ahead of my birth.

D-Day, of course, changed the course of history — of course, for the better.

Yes, this being the 75th anniversary we will, quite rightly, see lots of gusto, pomp and ceremony. I wish we would celebrate it with similar vigor each and every year.

I was in London for the 50th anniversary. That was quite an occasion.

If NOT for the Allied heroics of this day we will NOT be speaking English.

The New Series ‘Jennie’, About Winston Churchill’s American Mother, On ‘Acorn’ TV, Is Quite The Story.

I saw it being advertised on the banner of ‘Acorn‘ for the last week or so — but, I think it only became available today. We watched Episode 1 and it was GOOD.

Alas, though new to Acorn, it is NOT new. Appears it was shown on Thames in 2009 — so, 10-years ago. So, the quality, alack, is not that of ‘Victoria‘ on PBS. But, it is not dreadful. It is better than what you will find of YouTube.

I knew a bit about her suitor and husband Lord Randolph Churchill given that he is my hero Winston’s father. So, I learnt a fair amount about both of them in this first episode — how they met, their whirlwind romance and ahead-of-schedule marriage. I am looking forward to watching the rest of the series.

Looks very promising and I know that Lord Randolph’s story gets more colorful, though sad.

‘Free The Nipple’, In Style, En Masse, In New York, Thanks To Artist Spencer Tunick.

So, this, of course, exceeds anything we have managed to achieve in New Hampshire — the Hampton Beach topless events notwithstanding.

This was protesting the Facebook and Instagram ban on photographs of the female nipple, though the whole issue of ‘Free The Nipple‘ is still very relevant especially after the New Hampshire Supreme Court, inexplicably, claimed that it was NOT discriminatory to ban the female nipple but not the male.

So, it is good that the fight continues.

I am a supporter. I believe in equal rights to both sexes when it comes to going topless — a right I exercise near daily in the Summer.

So, here is to “Free The Nipple“.

Sam Kean’s “The Disappearing Spoon” — One Heck Of A Mind Expanding Book.

This is one heck of a book. I was going to say it was mind blowing, but that was, I realized, the wrong description. It is mind expanding. It is filled, chock-a-block with fascinating information and insights on every page. I learnt so much.

I already did two posts on subjects I learnt from this book: silver (and Argyria) & iodine.

I had never heard of him until this last March. Then, on a Sunday, on NPR, they read excerpts from his book ““. I was hooked. I wanted to read the whole book. I went looking for it on Amazon and found all three of his books. As is my wont, when it comes to authors, I ordered all three.

I decided to start with the ‘‘ because I do have an affinity to elements.

Wow. I wish this book had been around 50-years ago when I was studying chemistry. I would have learnt so much more.

It should be a MUST READ for all high school kids doing chemistry. It will make chemistry that much more real.

Though well and amusingly written, it is NOT an easy book to read. It is technical and some of his very technical explanations are not as clearly explained by Sam. I ended up doing more research on my own.

If you like chemistry, do yourself a favor and read this book. It will enrich your life and expand your mind.
