To be honest I would NOT read too much into this so called ‘firing’. The pope, as I keep on pointing out, is not ‘gay friendly’ despite his famous ‘who am I to judge‘ remark.

Nuncios, like Ambassadors, do get replaced on a regular basis ESPECIALLY those appointed to important countries by PRIOR heads — in the case of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò by arch-conservative Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Francis, quite rightly, wants somebody of his choice in D.C. Perfectly normal. So I wouldn’t get too excited.
