I was at this building for about 9 months between June 2012 and March 2013. I have refrained from using the word ‘worked’ because some might argue that. Plus my business card said “Chief Bottle Washer” and to be fair there wasn’t many bottles to wash or for that matter many places within the building that I could, even if I wanted, wash many bottles. Interesting building. I will give it that.

I think I have, in my previous MacDurgin posts, said most of what I want to say and what I should say. Some very nice and fun people worked in this building and I feel bad for some of them since many had invested so much of their life to MacDurgin. [N.B., There was never a ‘MacDurgin’ associated with this name. It is a made up name, by the canny Scot, to reflect the joint ownership, at the very start, between David Macfarlane and a ‘Durgin’ from Laconia.]

Last night, through ‘business-bankruptcies.com’ I found the names of these creditors per the filed court papers in July 2013. Some made me chuckle: American Air Systems Inc., Atlantic Cable Technology, Bank of New Hampshire, Capitol One Business Platinum, Citizens Bank, Cynthia O. Macfarlane, Duplo USA Corp, Fedex Freight, Jasper Desk Company, Kyocera Mita America Inc, Lesro Industries, Liberty Utilities, Mainstay Technologies AP, MBM Corp, Muratec America Inc., Niederman Stanzel & Lindsey, One Communications, Patrick Wood Law Office, Paul R. Simoneau, CPA, Seneca Data, Sonoma Health Products, State of New Hampshire, Supplies Network, Symquest, The Daily Sun, The DFS Group, UCOM Paging Service, Union Avenue Auto 415 LLC, United Stationers Financial Services LLC, UPS, US Cellular, Waste Mgt of NH-Rochester, Wescott, Dyer, Fitzgerald & Nichols, PA.

When I first heard about the bankruptcy and then learned some of the parameters of it (from employees let go as a result) I felt sorry and bad for Mrs. Cynthia O. Macfarlane. She is a lovely, wonderful, classy lady who I do not think has ever done any harm to anybody. If she got materially hurt by this I would feel bad. I could be wrong BUT I think she was hurt enough in the past and she doesn’t deserve anymore. Other than for ‘Cyndy’, and we are very fond of her and she was very good to us (to the last), I really have no sympathy for the rest. I think it is great that ‘they’ (lets not call her ‘she’) owed money to lawyers and accountants. That tickles me. That is class. That ‘they’ didn’t pay her bills to “The Daily Sun”, when its esteemed editor, the now Mayor of Laconia, Ed Engler (of the ‘University of Whales’ fame), is ‘their’ most ardent admirer is classic. The phrase I hear, often, was ” … it was run to the ground with glee”! Does not surprise me. There was a lot of ‘out of the ordinary’ happenings in that building and I can honestly say that I, luckily, was not involved in any of that (because it coincided with a period when I was ultra-buy with my own personal extracurricular activity outside of work). I know, for a fact, that my so called ‘commissions’ were, how shall we say it, never 100% kosher — which was part of the reason I was happy to walk away. There will be others that will happily tell you stories.

Yes, people had asked me why I didn’t buy it. At least two folks that worked there urged me to buy it. Yes, in 2003, I could have bought it. But, like I always tell people, I am not totally stupid, just partially stupid. I knew that this day would come. Could I have averted it IF I had bought it. We will never know.

My hope is that David Byer (and what a GREAT name), the irrepressible owner of ‘Capital City Brokers‘, who now leases the building buys it.
