The Minor Planet Center (MPC), the only official arbitrator of all things whizzing by Earth, just announced the discovery of asteroid 2014 KH39 which has been discovered by the automated Mt. Lemmon Sky Survey.

On June 3, 2014, at 20:07 UTC (think GMT), it will streak by Earth at a separation of just 272,346 miles.

That is close but still far enough not to be dangerous.

Just for comparison that is just around the average distance that the Moon is from Earth.

The so called ‘Lunar Distance’ (LD) is 238,900 miles.

On June 3 2014 KH39 will be at 1.14 LD.

So 2014 KH39 will be much closer than 2000 EM26 that people got so excited about in February 2014. That passed by 8 times further out!

Yes, there will, of course, be people freaking out.

A LD is a LD. We don’t, or at least I don’t, worry about the Moon falling on my head.
