I will readily confess that I am conflicted when it comes to Winnie.

There was a long period of my life, pre-1991, where I just absolutely ADORED her. I thought she was the cat’s whiskers. She did so much to fight apartheid, help the oppressed and help her imprisoned husband. She did a lot of good.

Then, yes, there was also the BAD and I never forgave her for divorcing — or how she initially fought to get a huge monetary settlement for him. But, from what I can piece together, Nelson continued to think of her kindly. But, he was an extraordinary man.

Anywho …

She is now dead. What we have to balance is whether she did more good than bad.

While I am not going to suddenly forgive her for her betrayals, I am willing to conceded that there was a 30-year period during which she was the “First Lady of Anti-Apartheid“, and I, for obvious reasons, was always passionately against apartheid and a HUGE fan of Nelson Mandela.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, RIP.
