Rumored Panasonic Lumix LX200 Unlikely To Offer 20MP & Needs A Lens Tweak To Make It Special.

The inevitable rumors of a Panasonic Lumix LX200 — the successor to the widely popular Lumix LX100 (which I own) — have surfaced again today, with a vengeance.
The LX100, announced in September 2014, is now getting old in the tooth and Panasonic no doubts knows that the LX100 owner base, including I, will happily cough up $900 for the follow-on, if it is the LX200.
But the rumored specs. don’t reflect reality from the PERSPECTIVE of one that owns and uses, near daily, a Lumix LX100.
The sensor more than likely will be a micro four thirds 20 megapixel from Sony. OK. But that doesn’t mean the LX200 will be a 20MP camera IF Panasonic perseveres with its ‘cropping’ approach. The LX100 has a 16MP sensor but the MOST you get is 12.7MP at the 3:2 aspect ratio. IF the LX200 follows suit the most we will get, at 3:2, is 15.2MP.
SO STOP TALKING 20MP unless we know what the crop is going to be. Yes, of course, Panasonic could OEM a 26MP sensor and then, with that crop, we could get 20MP.
Panasonic’s ‘Depth of Defocus‘ (DFD) autofocus would be nice BUT if you have a LX100 you will know that autofocus is not half bad. Plus I use Manual Focus at least 50% of the time. Isn’t that the point of owning a ‘real’ camera like the LX100?
Larger OLED viewfinder. Yep, that would be nice, BUT not a huge game changer. The electronic viewfinder on the LX100 isn’t great BUT it isn’t bad either.
Of course higher ISO will be nice BUT with a micro four thirds what price will we pay in terms of noise?
Built-in ND filter? Not a biggie for I and as such NOT a game changer for I.
Built-in flash. I just had a look at my LX100. Not sure WHERE they could put one WITHOUT making the body bigger and bulkier and the current LX100 is about as BIG as I am willing to contend.
What would be really nice is more zoom and more SPEED. SMILE. Might be hard to do. But even another 25mm would help. That would be a biggie.
So the bottom line is let’s be realistic. Folks who are propagating the rumors (and I THANK them for it) aren’t LX100 aficionados and as such are not thinking things through
But I will most likely upgrade to a LX200 the minute it is available. Deanna has already said, knowing my propensity to get new cameras every few months, that she will have the LX100. That is good. I won’t have to sell it and it will still be around. I do like the LX100. SMILE.

My Panasonic Lumix LX100.
