Mount Everest Was Not Summited At All In 2015!

I was shocked when I saw this news story yesterday during my daily, near religious reading of the U.K. “Daily Mail“.

As far as I was concerned summiting Everest had become somewhat of a joke — with all the fixed ladders, ropes and carved in steps, not to mention the armies of professional guides at hand, making it such that it was like taking a crowded elevator.

Per the Guinness Book of World Records 234 climbers summited Everest in ONE DAY in 2012! That, of course, is a record! The total for 2012, however, is said to have been 547. So 43% of those that summited in 2012 did it in one day. It must have been sure packed up at the top.

658 summited in 2013, but only 106 in 2014, though that included a 13-year old girl, the youngest female to do so.

From what I can see Everest has been KNOWN to have been summited 6,977 times.

Of course it was the earthquakes in 2015 that precluded Everest being climbed all the way to the top. I don’t think it was a bad thing. They need to rethink the granting of climbing permits and tourists rights. Yes, Nepal needs the money but it would be such a shame to devalue and demean the Everest experience and relevance.
