I set up a Countdown Clock because I can’t wait to CANCEL my DirecTV account.
I am on a 2 year contract.

#16. I now have PIP on my main 47″ TV (that is directly connected to the Genie HR 34) but not on my 27″ HD (connected to a Genie Mini) in our bedroom.

#17. The installer who was a nice enough guy (#10) though he actually commented about my Philips ‘Sound Bar’, and we spoke about audio via HDMI, did NOT set the Genie audio option to Dolby 5.1 though, of course, I have Dolby 5.1 on my Sound Bar — which is what delivers all my audio.

#18. No sound last night on Channel 203!

#19. DirecTV, on Saturday, less than a day after the installation, tried to charge me $5 to speak to an operator!

#20. I found a big, long bolt, on my driveway yesterday, where the DirecTV installer had parked his unmarked, open truck, this bolt obviously having fallen off that truck — the bolt right where it could have got embedded in the wheels of one of our vehicles necessitating a tire repair.

I filed a Better Business Bureau (BBB) complaint, at the L. A. Office, for the HR 34 rather than HR 44 scam on Saturday, June 22, 2013.

#11. Frigging PIP has disappeared from the ‘info’ bar. So NO PIP again. Did I tell you that I really, really, really despise DirecTV?

#12. I get my first bill, in my e-mail, 6 hours AFTER they charge my credit-card. So they first charge my credit card, then send me a bill. Nice.

#13. Other than the Super Bowl we don’t watch ‘Football’ (just don’t have the time). I have now tried 3 times, by phone, to cancel my ‘NHL Sunday Ticket‘ BUT they won’t let me!

#14. Though I have told them TWICE that I don’t want it, my bill (#11) informs me that they will be charging me $7.99 for a protection plan next month!

#15. The installer who was a nice enough guy (#10), and said that he had worked for DirecTV for 14 years, set my bedroom ‘Genie Mini‘ just for 480p, though the TV is 720p, and when I asked him said that it would automatically adjust. It didn’t BECAUSE he did not have the settings at ‘Native’ or have the 720p box ticked! Pretty poor.

I am not the only one who hates DirecTV. There is a Facebook page. Deanna signed up and started reposting these posts. You should signup too.

#1. They palmed me off with an older, now discontinued model HR 34 Genie DVR though they are charging me $25/month for ‘Advanced Receiver‘ and I should have got the new HR 44 which DirecTV cut0ver to in April 2013.

#2. PIP did not work. Had to make a 90 minute call and reboot system to get PIP to finally work.

#3. They installed a used, scratched, paint splattered ‘Internet connect‘ box which the installer found under the front seat of his unmarked, open truck.

#4. The coax cable that the installer fabricated to connect their ‘power box’ to the Genie had an intermittent fault in it and I had to replace the coax 40 minutes after he left.

#5. I still can’t get any TV Apps.

# 6. As with PIP took me a call and ‘hours’ on the phone to get YouTube to work. But, no sound. Appears others have the same problem.

#7. DirecTV tried to automatically bill me for $7.99/month for a Protection Plan when I NEVER ordered one and don’t plan to get one.

#8.NewsMix‘, Channel 352, that is featured in the booklet that they gave me, and a feature perfect for a news junkie like me, was discontinued in November 2012.

#9. 6 hours after installation they billed $45.99 to my credit card though they still haven’t generated a bill for me!

#10. Installer calls me up at 11:15 am, when the appointment was between 8 am to noon, and starts shouting at me that my street is not on (his) GPS, that he is LOST and is somewhere in the woods.

I have just filed a Better Business Bureau (BBB) complaint, at the L. A. Office, for the HR 34 rather than HR 44 scam.

Had DirecTV Installed Yesterday. Not 100% Happy. Gave Me An OLD HR34 ‘Genie’ vs. HR 44 I Should Have Got.

I am NOT happy.

There were some good bits BUT I am not happy.

My appointment was to be between 8 to noon. Got 4 calls — the last 2 said the tech would be late. Then I got a call from the Tech. He said he was LOST! Couldn’t tell me where he was. Said he was in the woods. But he got here at 11:33. He was decent enough.

Came in an open truck NOT a single decal or sign saying DirecTV. But, said he had worked for DirecTV for 14 years.

The installation was as simple as could be. I already had all the wiring from DISH. So all he had to do was install his dish and unhook the coaxes going from the DISH equipment and tap into that.

Though he claimed he had worked for DirecTV for 14 years I later found out that he didn’t even know how to set my TV’s to the proper resolution! I had to reset those.

PIP wasn’t working, neither was YouTube.

Got those working after a 90 phone call today. Still can’t get sound on YouTube. I gather that is a common problem. Had to reset the Genie to get PIP and YouTube.

Not good.

I am bummed. These guys are WAY WAY worse than DISH!

They have already billed me WITHOUT sending me a statement.

I am not happy.

I Made Another Call Today, After 25 Minutes Of ‘Discussion’ I Got Another $5/Month OFF! I Am Now Happy. That Was The Price They Offered.

I got this offer AGAIN in the mail today. Same one that I had 2 weeks ago and tried to get DirecTV to honor on Tuesday. Now realize that this guy ‘Robert McCaskill‘, contrary to what he claimed, does NOT work for DirecTV. He works for ‘travelresorts.com‘. Found that on his e-mail! Not amused. He assured me that he worked for DirecTV. I asked him explicitly.

Look at the 3rd sheet here. Click on any sheet to ENLARGE. Says ULTIMATE for $34.99.

Well, I got it! Took 20 minutes of ‘discussion’. They had to cancel my prior order and start again from SCRATCH. I now have TWO credit card charges.

This was NOT funny. Hope these offers help YOU.

Here is a GOOD number to call DirecTV: 1-800-531-5000.

Now, following my $10 referral discount (thanks to Deanna’s cousin, the same one that told us about Comet ISON), my monthly bill for the 1st year will be $45.99. That is quite a drop from the $100 I was paying to DISH after I cancelled my Cricket Pack.

I did get SATISFACTION and ULTIMATE for $34.99 that I desired!
See June 14, 2013 post.

It amazes me, as somebody who was Customer Support Manager for ITT (UK), that in this day and age corporations still think that abusing customers from the get-go, treating them with utmost contempt and trying to deceive them at every turn is the right way to attract business.

But, I guess it works BECAUSE I did eventually sign-up with DirecTV, with a 2 year contract, THOUGH I hung up on 5 different reps, yesterday alone, before I did the deed.

But, I still feel VIOLATED — though the person I ended up doing the deal with seemed like an outstanding young gentleman, who should go far. Though I was SUPPOSED to be talking to a ‘local’ company in Dover, NH, this exemplary young (I think) man was based in North Carolina and claimed he worked directly for DirecTV. He gave me a name. Not sure whether it is kosher since I also realized that all the female reps that work for DirecTV claim that their name is ‘Wanda’ — and no wonder I still feel sick to my stomach. Just to finish off about this young man, I think, and I could be wrong, he was black — and given that we are talking about my ‘second home’, North Carolina, this could be the case. He was good. I am thankful for that.

Yes, everything that you see in the DISH ads about DirecTV having millions of hidden fees is true.

I was also lucky that a DISH rep told me last week that I would be responsible for the replacement of all of my equipment after the first 30 days. CORRECT. So if my high-tech Genie, basically an Windows XP PC in disguise, fails after 30 days I would be on the hook for $200 UNLESS I bought into the protection plan. Given my experience with DirecTV I would NOT be surprised if they did not sabotage the equipment of customers who did not buy the protection, 90 days into the deal, just to make more money. No, I am not impressed with DirecTV. So, I ended up buying 3 years worth of protection, which I have already paid for on my credit card, for $39.99.

DirecTV sent me a 3 page flyer 3 weeks ago saying that I could have the Ultimate package for $34.99 for the 1 year.

That was the first hurdle. There was NO way they were going to give me that! I hung up on 5 folks, at least 3 of them called ‘Wanda’ because of that. I called the supposed ‘local’ NH retailer in Amherst, NH. That was a JOKE!

I then Googled for other retailers and got this number for Dover, NH — which was answered in NC!

This guy, ‘Robert’, was at least upfront. He told me that there was no way I would get the prices quoted on the flyer. But, I could get an electronic discount and I had a referral discount (Deanna’s cousin) — though I have YET to see that. That is a promise.

Then Robert HIT me, apologetically, with a $105 … handling charge. I hit the roof. He put a supervisor on the line. She reduced it, though it was not apples-to-apples, to $34. But I still had to buy the equipment protection. Bottom line it came to $75 — but that was better than $105. It was bloody amazing. Given the 5 prior calls yesterday, I was on the phone with DirecTV for over 2 hours. All the time I felt as I was been reamed with a burning hot poker up my backside. A few years ago I got a cystoscopy. That is when they put this dirty big microscope, with lights, up your pee-pee. Well, cystoscopy was less painful than my dealings yesterday with DirecTV.

So why did I, a man not noted for his patience, preserve? Because I knew I could cut my DISH bill by 50% and get more! Contrary to what so many think I am not totally stupid. Just partly. I had done my sums. I had a referral that supposedly gave me $10 off a month. So, I was ready. Yes, I had a SpreadSheet.

So, I did the deed, Robert in general doing his best though he was constrained by the DirecTV shenanigans.

I have everything in writing — in triplicate. BUT, I do NOT trust them. I know that there will be altercations down the road — like I have yet to see the $10 referral discount (and yes, I gave them account numbers, names, relationships, inside leg measurements, Social Securities etc. etc.).

It was NOT a good experience. I am still sick to my stomach.

Then I had to cancel my DISH account. I did that through TDS since I pay DISH via TDS — and get a $5/month discount for doing so.

I was transferred to 2 wrong people. Finally I got a DISH cancellation specialist. Bingo, before I could even open my mouth she is offering me a $20 discount. Then when I finally managed to get out that I wanted to cancel, the discount went up to $35. But, it needed to be $55 to match my first 12 months with DirecTV. Plus, by then I had already PAID DirecTV $75 — which was charged to my card within 14 seconds of me giving them my 3-digit security code.

I still have to confirm, to be doubly sure, that my DISH is cancelled.

DirecTV is going to send me all my equipment, including the dish, via UPS! That is why I had to pay $35. [And yes, I have to pay $17/each to return my DISH boxes.]

This is not funny. I am not impressed. I am not happy. I would not recommend DirecTV or DISH to anyone!
