Why I Drove 9.5-Hours (500-miles) For 8.5-Hours At ‘Acadia National Park’, Maine.

What we did during our 8.5-hours there.
I had it worked out in my head —
and, for a change, all went according to plan.



Teischan (14) & I were both having ‘Acadia‘ withdrawal pangs. For the last 6-years we had always spent 3-5 days in Acadia at the end of June. We would typically also go for another stay, 3-4 days in September. Between 2013 & 2019 we had visited (& stayed) 12 — possibly 13 — times.

Not going in June, because of COVID was a blow.

We are still doing some degree of social distancing. We have not gone to a restaurant or got takeout since March 22. I miss that terribly! I like eating out & getting takeout. Well, if restaurants were out, in kind of followed that hotels would be too. Yes, we could have managed something, but it did not seem worth the hassle.

Then Teischan suggested a DAY TRIP!

I calculated the driving effort. In my old age I had usually limited myself to about 6-hours of driving a day. Deanna couldn’t go. Such a long drive would not be conducive to her back. So, I would have to do all the driving. I thought about. I insisted that I need to be allowed a 30-minute nap before the drive back.

It worked out. We left at 7:19 am on Wednesday, & arrived back home at 1:20 am Thursday. I did NOT arrange for the time to be so convenient. Just worked out. It was a LOT of driving. About my limit. Took the Jaguar XJ8. That made a difference. That is a TRULY European touring car. It does eat the miles without taxing your body too much.

We had a BALL. Did a fair amount of hiking, climbing (mainly her) & walking. We bought food at a supermarket in Ellsworth before we got there.

All worked out.

It was CROWDED. But, we had fun.

We know the ropes.

The Jaguar Comes Out Of Hibernation.

I am pretty sure that this is the latest it has hibernated. I am sure that I usually drive it in March — April, provided that there is no snow on the ground.

Well, this year was different. I was cooler for a start & we had the stay at home. There was nowhere to go in it.

I had it on a Schumacher trickle-charger while it hibernated. I have 3 of these chargers. One for each of my British cars. It works great. Started first time. No hesitation. Bang. That made me happy.

The pictures, quite nicely, hide all the dust on the car. Will put it through a car wash soon.

Well, Summer must be here. Now to get the other Jag out of hibernation.

My Jaguar XJ8 Is Still Good (& V12 XJS Is ‘OK’) BUT I Can’t Help Lusting After This One.

It is ready to be sprung free. Had the battery on a good trickle-charger.

Also on a good trickle-charger, but this one needs to be registered. SMILE.


Wow, I haven’t bought a Jag in 5-years! Wow. I am impressed with myself.

I would NOT get rid of the XJ8 unless it was totally & utterly kaput. It is a lovely car — aesthetically and it hasn’t given me too much grief on the mechanical side. But, that can change. Yikes. My plan is to nurse it along as long as I can.

I haven’t looked for Jags online for years — ok, maybe for ‘months’. Just had a quick look. There are Jags out there for I. So, I am OK.

Seeing This Burnt Jaguar In The Australian Bushfires Was Upsetting.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I know. I don’t need to be told. I am only semi-stupid, not totally. I understand and appreciate that in the scheme of things a burnt up Jag is the least of the problems facing the Australians with these raging bushfires.

That said and noted, it is still distressing to see, what must have been a rather nice Jag, XJ8 or XJ12, destroyed. Another one, alas, bites the dust.

The reason I have two is that I am trying to preserve them for posterity. Enough said.

The Jaguar XJS V-12 (1989) — Last Spin Of 2019.

September 30 and the 2019 registration came to an end — as did the registration on 4 other cars. The joys of owning 6 cars. I have never owned an unregistered/uninsured car! Asked my friend at the Town Hall who does the resignations as to what the deal is. The price remains the same, but you can register whenever — the only thing is that you have to get it inspected the same day you get it registered.

Though it 30-years old it is not cheap to register since it was $44,000+ car when new.

I typically don’t drive it after September. Why? Because I only enjoy driving it topless and I, in my old age, like to freeze my bones. So, didn’t see the point of paying to have it registered if I am not going to be driving it till April/May. So, that is what I did. IT IS INSURED. I am not stupid!

Took it for a good run. I keep the battery trickled charge non-stop. So, it started first time. It is a TRUE Jag. It likes to stretch it legs. That V12 is something else.

Well, it is now hibernating.

This, in reality, is NOT my car. It is Teischan’s. She just lets me use it, register it, insure it and pay for its upkeep. She will get it when she can drive!

Well, the Summer is over.

The Jaguar XJS V-12 (1989) Goes For A Run.

It is no secret that I use this Jaguar, my XJS, sparingly. Goal is to preserve it, in as excellent shape as possible, for as long as possible. Plus, it belongs to Teischan and it will be 3 years before she can drive it (legally).

She wanted to take it out. So, we took off the full body cover. Started the FIRST TIME. I keep the battery trickle charged year round. Put some oil, topped off the coolant, put the roof down and we were OFF.

It is a lovely car to drive! I feel privileged. The acceleration. Folks stay well behind once they see the acceleration from a stop. They don’t want to be embarrassed. Put it away with the hood down. That would mean we will use it again shortly. Stay tuned.

The XJ8 has been used quite a bit this Summer. Going to be using it again tomorrow.

Out and about two days running (in every sense of the word). Well it, i.e., the XJS, along with the XJ8, the MGB and the Nissan Quest, all needed to be registered prior to month end. Plus the XJS needed some petrol. For those of you who have never owned a Jaguar, Jaguars run on PETROL, not gas. Got that. This was at the Town Hall.

They are all registered. You can actually see the bright green 2018 decal on the number plate. Next step — having them inspected. In the case of the Jags that will be Wednesday.

I have NOT driven it much at all this year. I have, of course, been using my 2002 Jaguar XJ8 — though not that much either.

It is that time of the year. Both Jags and the MGB need to be registered by October 1 — which also means, in New Hampshire, that I have to get them inspected. So, I thought I should stretch the XJS’ legs prior to taking it to ‘Paul’ at B-Boys, in Barnstead, on Wednesday. It is a fun car to drive.
