IBM’s Folding Smartphone Reminds Me, Vividly, Of IBM’s Ill-Fated OS/2 Operating System.

Right now this IBM smartwatch with a foldable screen is ONLY a patent — and IBM (as you must know) files a lot of them.

Cute in concept, BUT will there be a demand for it and will it be practical. Making it even somewhat rugged and waterproof could be a challenge. Plus, why would someone want a foldable screen on their wrist when they are BOUND to be carrying around a smartphone (possibly with a folding screen). Just doesn’t look right …

It reminds me of IBM’s ill-fated OS/2 and I know most of you probably have never, ever heard of it. It was IBM’s attempt, mid-1990s, to come up with a BETTER PC operating system to displace Microsoft’s Windows. Well, we know how that went …

Happened to see this the SAME day. Kind of said it all. Click image to access the original.

Interesting. The v6.14.2.0 update was just 26-days ago. We have had two updates within 45-days. That is pretty swift.

Today’s update did claim to fix some ‘major’ issues — but, as is Garmin’s wont we never get to know what they are.

In January 16, 2019 we were at v6.11.1.0. So, we have gone up FOUR full versions higher less than six months. Not sure whether that is good or bad.

Make sure you update your ‘Express‘.

Garmin Express (For Windows) Now At Version 6.14.2.0 (As Of June 4, 2019).

Interesting. This is a ‘dot’ update — i.e., it went up from v6.14.1.0 to v6.14.2.0. I had to do a double-take to spot it. I expected it to be v6.15.1.0.

Also this new update in 19-days! That is fast — and strage. They must have had a major bug they needed to fix, maybe with the new ‘Connect IQ‘ store.

In January 16, 2019 we were at v6.11.1.0. So, we have gone up three full versions higher in five months. Not bad.

Make sure you update your ‘Express‘.

‘SplendCare’ Portable ECG/EKG Monitor, At $79, Better Than $99 KardiaMobile.

by Anura Guruge

Two ECG traces — one from SplenCare other from KardiaMobile.

Notice, they look very much alike. That is GOOD.

OK, I am lucky enough to be able to have BOTH, the $99 AliveCor KardiaMobile & the $79 SplendCare unit.

As you can see from the two plots above the readings I got from the two, despite the $20 price difference, is very much the same.

Given that equivalence, I have to say that I prefer the less expensive SplendCare unit more, and it would be the one that I recommend.

What is my main reason. Bluntly put, much less hassle. SplendCare, with its cute, built-in screen, is a standalone unit. Take it out of the box, charge it and BANG you get a reading. You don’t have to download an APP, register, wait for a doctor to do the first reading etc. That is way cool. Plus, unlike the KardiaMobile it is not obnoxious. With the ‘Kardia’ it is always ’10 questions’ before you can get started. Not so with the SplendCare. Pleasure to use.

Yes, I did install the Windows APP. Easy enough. And downloading the ECG readings via USB was a piece of cake. So, that is the key theme …. easy, easy, easy. I liked it.

If you need a ECG unit get the SplendCare for $79. Money well spent.

I had been expecting an update to Garmin Express for a couple of weeks. We had been at 6.10 for quite some time.

So, being told that there was a new version did not surprise me. So, I updated to 6.11.1.0 about an hour ago. Can’t say I noticed anything different. With Garmin, that is NOT a bad thing.

Garmin Express Is Now At 6.5.1.0 (As Of June 7, 2018).

I got this update a few minutes into June 7, 2018, i.e., like at 12:15am. It is the first update I have had on Express since getting my Garmin Fenix 5 a month ago. I kind was expecting one, so I was relieved to get it.

As I had previously told you, Garmin Express (at least on Windows) does NOT auto-update or provide you with any notification that an update is available. You have to check manually. Which I always do.

NOTE. Something I discovered today, prior to updating to 6.0. IF you are getting a ‘Garmin Server Error‘ when using Express it means YOU need to update Garmin Express. Happened to me when I still had 5.9. That prompted me to CHECK for Express updates. As soon as I had 6.0 … all was GOOD.
