This is a worthwhile, fun & rewarding experience. We took part in the May 2018 ‘Spring Clean Up Day‘ and it was a blast. Since all three of us did the full 4-hour shift we got six free tickets which we have yet to use.

Being around the spectacular Castle is always fun and the staff is ultra nice. In May we also got a very nice, free lunch. Hope the weather is good in November.

You should sign up. You will enjoy it. It is good to support the Castle.

‘Castle In The Clouds’ (Moultonborough, NH), Spring Clean Up Day: Cleaning The Trolleys.

by Anura Guruge

We like the “Castle In The Clouds“. We visited for the first time last July, became members right away, and ended up going three more times last year — including Christmas.

We are still members and plan to renew our membership this year because it is a worthy and noble cause.

I got an e-mail about today’s Volunteer Day and thought it would be a worthwhile and possibly even fun thing to do. So, I responded that 3 of us will volunteer for the full 4-hours, 10am to 2pm.

As luck would have it it was a PERFECT day to be outside working.

I had seen that they needed the two trolleys cleaned and when we got there nobody else had shown and interest in doing that. So, I said that we will do it.

It worked out well. I did the outside. Deanna did the inside and Teischan kind of flitted about helping here and there.

It was not trivial, but we did it.

They gave us a GOOD lunch and we got to sit outside, in the Sun, and enjoy the incomparable views. See pictures here.

So, that was the better part of the day.

Met some nice people. Some that knew me. Getting scary. Met three people in total who knew me.

We got 6 free tickets to boot. Not that we need them, but as they pointed out we can give them to friends and family.

Tomorrow, Saturday, September 30, 2017, Is “National Public Lands Day” (NPLD) — A Day To Volunteer.

 by Anura Guruge

Some of you may have heard, over the ‘ether’, that National Parks, e.g., Acadia, and some State Parks, are having FREE entrance on Saturday, September 30, 2017. That is indeed TRUE. That is because it is “National Public Lands Day” (NPLD) – 2017. So, if you want to go to a Park for FREE, tomorrow is the day. [Not a BIG deal for us since as a family we have two (2) lifetime (4-person) passes to the National Parks!]

Though most only get to hear the FREE part, the real essence of NPLD is as a day of public volunteering on PUBLIC LAND. So, if you can. In New Hampshire there are various local initiatives THOUGH I can’t find any by our NH “Parks & Recreation” (for 2017).

Revisiting My Exclusive New Hampshire ‘Red-Blue Map’ From 2012 — Obama v. Romney. NH Will Be MORE Red In 2016.

by Anura Guruge

In 2012, contradicting what you would have thought if you just went by all of the roadside political signs you saw in New Hampshire, President Barack Obama again won New Hampshire (a battleground state, and superficially ‘red’), by 40,659 votes (5.8%).

The NH voting was done in terms of 237 ‘towns’; Obama won 142, lost 94 and one, Dixville, was a tie.

Of the 10 NH Counties, Obama won 7, lost 3.

I painstakingly created these maps (in November 2012) to see how this victory was wrought.

As some of you know I campaigned like a black for Obama in 2008 & 2012 — going door-to-door (at least 450 houses in each instance), doing phone-banks, making signs, stuffing bags, taking people to the polls on election day and feeding (on my own dime) the other Obama volunteers in Laconia on multiple nights.

I haven’t volunteered as yet in 2016 for the Presidential election — though yesterday I marched in the Gilford ‘Old Home Day’ parade, with Devanee, for our friend, Lisa DiMartino who is running as a Democrat for a seat in the New Hampshire House (District 2: Gilford & Meredith).

I am, for all my shortcomings, a keen observer and follower of New Hampshire politics. The 2016 ‘RedBlue‘ map will be DIFFERENT to that of 2012. It will be MORE RED!

I could be wrong, I HOPE I am wrong, BUT I do NOT think it is a given that Hillary Clinton will carry New Hampshire.

I agree that there is a HIDDEN Trump vote that is not reflected in the polls.

So those that think that New Hampshire is still ‘Blue’ could be in for a NASTY surprise.

Just a Heads Up.

Well compared to last year when we had a memorable cruise on ‘The Lake‘, the keyword, as far as I was concerned, for this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Cookout was ‘DRY‘.

Yes, it was dry in that it was a beautiful day, there was NO water in sight (which is a SHAME when we all live in the Lakes Region), I did not run the risk of getting soaked (as Bruce and I did last year by a rogue wave) because we were on very dry land and there was NO WINE — which to me makes everything very dry. Well, I fixed the wine paucity. The girls and I made a quick trip, in the XJ8, to the Wolfeboro Liquor Store. I did not realize how popular I am over there! Wow. Do I really visit them that often (and socialize with them)? Well in a way that was probably the most fun part of the afternoon making wine jokes at the Liquor Store(though I did tell my favorite Monica Lewinsky joke at the cockout because the mike (if not Mike) looked so forlong).

Of course it was nice to be with a few of the volunteers. Not sure where the others were.

The antique boats were allegedly the draw and they were sure nice though I am a tad puzzled how seeing a few, on trailers, inside a (lovely) barn was supposed to be something that special for this crowd. None of us are really strangers to boats or for that matter even classic boats. Hhhmmm. It is not like we don’t see classic boats on a regular basis …. Wasn’t there a big show, ON THE WATER, in Alton just a couple of weeks ago?

Well the 4 of us stayed on, with ‘Nancy’ and another lady, to help take down the tent, move all the tables and chairs etc. Teischan enjoyed that the best because she got to do a running commentary of what the others were doing. Maybe she was right. That was probably the best part of the cookout! There was at least some action. Funny that.

Click to access, mostly disabled, ‘official’ Website — which still mentions Keene.

After I wrote my initial post yesterday I picked up a copy of “The Laconia Daily Sun” and got to read about all the details — and they would know given that their Editor/Publisher, Ed Engler (of ‘University of Whales‘ fame) is, of course, the most honorable mayor of Laconia.

I guess I hadn’t really thought about it BUT I had not realized that the Laconia event would be organized and run by the SAME FOLKS that have been doing the Keene festival. Hhhmm!

I had just assumed, maybe hoped, that the Laconia festival was a fresh start and that it was being run, entirely, by Laconia folks.

I had some mixed feelings yesterday about it being in Laconia and now I am even more disquieted. I don’t know. Yes, of course, they have the experience, the contacts, the contracts and the know-how. But, from what I know they also have some baggage. Weren’t there some serious unpaid bills?

I had not realized that the N.H. Festival is essentially a franchise — owned by a group of people, who can SHOP it to various cities for the best offer. It is also now clear that Laconia is just getting ‘it’, initially, just for 2015 on a ‘suck it and see’ trial basis. I do not know. Doesn’t sit well with me. I was hoping that the whole event, say like the Laconia “Multicultural Festival“, would be organized and managed by a conglomerate of Laconia entities, e.g., Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce and say Laconia Rotary.

And that it is being billed, categorically, as “Downtown, Laconia“, also makes me uneasy. I do not think Downtown Laconia has the ‘expanse’ required to stage this festival like it was in Keene. Keene is blessed with a wide and long Main Street with bustling businesses and eateries. Laconia — not as much. [SMILE!] I do not know. [Have I said that before.] There is also the unsaid message. Laconia, these days, alas, has issues. Bike Week is one thing, Pumpkin Festival is another. Hhhmmmm. I will TRY to keep a close eye on this.

The most ironic thing (so far) — Deanna told me, as soon as we started talked about this “I don’t want you to go and volunteer us to volunteer in Laconia. I don’t want to volunteer in Laconia”! Wow. And I had already said that I was planning to volunteer. That is the problem with Laconia. Some people, like Deanna, are extremely leery of Laconia.
