Iconic, American Landscape Photographer Ansel Adams Was Born This Day 116-Years Ago.

by Anura Guruge

Though not well known, Ansel did shoot in color.

I wrote about Ansel Adams, quite recently, in my latest books.

So, I am going to reproduce ‘chunks’ from that, since that will also give me a chance to air this text and see what typos I have. {Smile}

He definitely was not a ‘straight out of the camera’ photographer. He treated his exposed negatives as canvases to be worked on. He manipulated and worked with the original image captured to get the picture he wanted to project – particularly when it came to its tonality and dynamic range.

He is best known for his black-and-white masterpieces. He, however, did shoot in color – often so when he was doing work on commission. In the 1940s he was hired by Standard Oil (now Esso and once Exxon) to shoot a portfolio of color images, per the theme ‘See Your West’, that were used in a giveaway promotion at gas stations.

Ansel, given the grandiose scale of the subject matter he preferred, opted (as did other professionals at the time) for large format cameras – usually capable of producing 8” x 10” ‘plates’ or negatives.

Ansel worked hard to get his iconic images. Sometimes when optical filters alone would not provide him with the light contrast and gradations he sought, especially when water was involved, he would use pieces of card, he held in front of the lens, to achieve the desired exposure. Then, he would work on the negative.

Ansel was known to be a darkroom maestro, who knew and employed every trick of the trade when it came to ‘doctoring’ negatives and controlling the images obtained from negatives. He predated ‘Photoshop’ and the magic that can be wrought from the RAW data available from medium- to high-end digital cameras. The options for ‘post processing’ digital images that are available today are likely to exceed Ansel’s wildest dreams. It is, however, possible that Ansel’s best, pre-digital and in b&w, cannot be photoshopped to be any better!

Dear Winston Churchill, ‘THE LION’, Alas, Died This Day 52-Years Ago; Spare A Second To Reflect.

by Anura Guruge

For I, my devotion to Dear Winston is very simple.

IF NOT for Winston you would NOT be reading this in English.

For that I am eternally GRATEFUL to Dear Winston — one of my greatest inspirations.

Sir Winston Churchill’s tomb in Bladon, Oxfordshire,
not far from the magnificent Blenheim Palace where he was born.

I have made my pilgrimage to this tomb, on a wintery day, in 1998 or 1999.

I was the only one there. It was gray, cold and drizzly.

I stood there in awe, silence and solidarity.

My devotion to dear Winston has no caveats. I know that some claim that he was a racist. But, in that I do not think he was that different to that many of his class, from that time. He was Prime Minister when we still had an Empire and despite his understandable reluctance to lose India, I really can’t believe that he set out to undermine coloreds. I know one thing. He was NO Donald Trump! Yes, I have paid him the highest compliment that I can. I named a gorgeous, very regal Golden after him. My ‘Winston’ from 1998.

I was 11-years old when he died.

I can’t say I was that familiar with him at the time of his death. There was no TV in Ceylon.

I do remember, vividly, my parents taking me to see a film of his funeral. That would have been in 1965. It was in color and I think it was over 1 hour long. My adoptive mother cried. I distinctly remember the film ending with a heading splashed across the screen ‘A Journey’s End‘. My adoptive mother talked about that on the way home. They (i.e., my adoptive father & mother) had completed one (of their two) round-the-world diplomatic trips, at the behest of the Ceylon government, the year before. As was her wont, and the fashion of the time, she completed an elaborate scrapbook to document that trip. On the last page she wrote ‘A Journey’s End‘. My adoptive mother, who was an ultra-sensitive person, was ‘rattled’ that the film had used that same phrase! Yes, small things like that bothered her — albeit, not in a bad way. So, whenever I think of Dear Winston’s funeral — ‘A Journey’s End‘ comes to mind.

Anywho …

Just take a second to reflect. Pay homage.

Like I said, IF NOT for dear Winston I would have had to learn frigging German and I am BAD at learning new languages.

Thank YOU, Dear Winston, KG OM CH TD PCc DL FRS RA.

Videos On YouTube Of The Fuji X-T2 — My Dream Camera.

by Anura Guruge

This is like a bespoke camera — made just for I.

Fuji really should make one with a note that says:
“Made Specifically For Anura Guruge”.

I have been lusting after the X-T2
ever since I realized it was going to be for real.

Now there are a series of YouTube videos of actual Fuji X-T2s.

This is, by far, the MOST BEAUTIFUL camera
I have ever seen.

I would have sold a kidney to get one. Luckily I don’t.
Have the money. Already budgeted. SMILE.

8 Control dials. EIGHT! Wow.

“Great British Bake Off” (GBBO) Season 6, i.e., 2015 — Last Few Episodes No Longer On YouTube.

by Anura Guruge

gbbo676766

Click to access Season 6 Episode 1 on YouTube.

All of the Season 6 (2015) episodes, including the Final, i.e., Episode 11, were available on YouTube in October/November last year. We know because we watched them all on YouTube — typically 36 hours after they aired in the U.K. We got it down to a fine art towards the end. We knew who posted decent clips and who were just pretending to post.

A few days ago I got a message from somebody I did not know on Facebook asking if I knew how to find the Season 6 Final on YouTube. I thought it would be trivial. It wasn’t. A lot of Season 6 videos have been deleted. It is possible that the BBC or PBS is doing this. I sought help from the kids. We found a YouTube ‘library’ with 14 supposedly Season 6 videos. So we assumed that Episode 11 was in there. Wrong. Appears that Season 6 episodes beyond episode 6 are not on YouTube.

If you know better PLEASE help. I am going to look around on the PBS channel on Roku etc.

So take this as a Heads Up.
