Sunday Deliveries By Amazon — WHY? Didn’t Ask For It. Just Straight Prime 2-Day.

by Anura Guruge

For the second Sunday in a row we had an Amazon delivery via USPS.

Strange.

Never asked for Sunday, or even 1-day delivery.

Just ordered them ‘2-day’ Prime — given I am a Prime Member of longstanding.

Kind of funny. Shortly after I placed the orders it showed SUNDAY delivery. So, they are planning for it.

I am sure the USPS is not complaining. Spoke to the delivery person today. He seemed quite happy. He is getting paid.

But, why?

Doesn’t make sense.

And as a AMZN shareholder (also of longstanding) this bothers me, though, OF COURSE, I cannot complain about the ROI I have got from AMZN. Smile.

Why Does The U.S. Postal Service Have To Be Stupid & Obnoxious About Handling ‘Media’ Mail?

by Anura Guruge

This was a second-hand, paperback book (yes, a James Michener) that I ordered from Amazon that I ordered on May 14, 2018. It was NOT Prime and I knew that. And Amazon did tell me that it would take 10+ days to get to me.

They shipped it on May 16, 2018 and I got it today, May 25, 2018. It took USPS 9-days!

Look at the routing: 7 intermediary stops! SEVEN. That costs money. This is STUPID.

Why bother with this inane, circuitous routing for media mail. It can’t save them any money.

They really should look into this. This makes no sense, even for the USPS.

REUSING Amazon Packaging Rather Than Recycling The Boxes — A PROPOSAL.

by Anura Guruge

Recycling boxes, i.e., cardboard, though better than just throwing it away, is extremely inefficient and costly in terms of energy.

The boxes are RE-PULPED then reconstituted again as paper or cardboard. That is wasteful.

It would so much better just to reuse the boxes as many of us do …

We also reuse boxes when we do returns.

So, why can’t we have a scheme where we can RETURN Amazon boxes to a Post Office.

USPS can send them back to an Amazon Fulfillment Center. In many cases they will be sending trucks to Amazon EMPTY — to pick up new loads of deliveries. So, this will make those trips more productive.

I cannot see why Amazon and USPS could NOT be able to get this to work. Yes, there will be some initial costs but Amazon will quickly be in the BLACK. Boxes are expensive, even for Amazon.

It is possible that there might be some Amazon customers who are squeamish about having things delivered in USED boxes, though to be fair you never know where a box has been. I have got plenty of Amazon boxes with cuts, tears and stains.

Yes, maybe Amazon could irradiate the returned boxes to appease all.

And, then there is another option. It can be part of your SHIPPING PREFERENCES. Amazon could give you a small DISCOUNT for checking an option saying “Will Accept Reused Boxes”.

I am sure consumer will buy into this. We take the cardboard to be recycled. So, taking it to a post office will not be that different.

I really would like Amazon to think about this.

What do YOU think?

Amazon Packaging Is Socially Irresponsible!

by Anura Guruge

A set of 4 TINY watch straps pins
that I received today!

EXACTLY as it arrived.

Nothing removed, nothing rearranged. Untouched.

There was NO packing. Nothing to break.

This was it.

The little packed had slipped under the bottom flaps!

The ITEM!

This is irresponsible.

I just could NOT believe it. I knew what was inside. I was expecting it.

This is BEYOND crazy.

A tiny package of unbreakable stuff. It should have gone in a padded envelope.

This makes me very upset and annoyed — especially as an Amazon shareholder.

UPDATE

I tweeted this post and copied Amazon. They responded.
They have a PACKAGING FEEDBACK process — here is the link.
I used it. Pretty neat.

Send them the pictures and feedback. Now YOU know.

Amazon Still Profligate In Its Packaging.

by Anura Guruge

The 5 Solar Eclipse PAPER glasses I received

EXACTLY as they arrived.

This is CRAZY.

This is irresponsible.

It was not fragile. There was nothing to break. These could have been easily shipped in a padded envelope.

Waste of resources. Yes, the air doesn’t weigh much BUT the box takes up space on planes, trucks and in the USPS vehicles. Plus the cardboard (which, to be fair, we recycle).

I have complained before about Amazon (as you can see below), and I do so as HUGE fan, a loyal customer and above all a very-happy shareholder (of AMZN).

UPS, cleverly, tried to get Amazon to be better by changing their pricing to include package DIMENSIONS as well as weight. Well, Amazon doesn’t use UPS that much, anymore! This was sent via USPS.

Get E-Mail Notifications, From The USPS, Of The Mail That Is To Be Delivered To You That Day!

by Anura Guruge

This is June, so this is NOT an April Fool’s gag. Honest.

A real service from our USPS — yes, the ‘Post Office‘ — for free and for gratis.

It is called ‘Informed Delivery‘. Check it out.

They didn’t have to really do much to offer this service. They already scan all the mail as a part of their first-cut, automated sorting system. They use state-of-the-art OCR (optical character recognition) to pick-out the zip-code. So, extending that to read the rest of the address was not too difficult.

It could be a GREAT help. For a start you can see IF the check is indeed in the mail — way ahead of the mail being delivered.

I like it — THOUGH alas it is not available in my zip though it is SUPPOSED to be! As ever my loss and the price I pay for living in the stick.

But, check it out. Sign-up for it. It will be handy.

A New Kind Of Postal — US Postal Worker Thinks ‘MD’ Refers to Minnesota!

hjby Anura Guruge

I really am not sure what to make of this. Whether it was sad or funny. But, it sure was perplexing when you happen to be someone who wasn’t born here.

Happened this Wednesday as we were recovering from the Blizzard of 2017.

I needed to get a proof copy of my latest book to my latest proofreader, my former colleague at CASE Communications, Patrice Bourgeois. So, I made it down to a local post office and I will NOT mention which one since I want to spare blushes and because bar one exception, I am very fond of all the local postal workers across multiple post offices.

The book was going to Glen Burnie, a suburb of Baltimore.

I was sending it Priority Mail, signature guarantee etc. etc.

So, the USPS postal worker had to enter the address into their ‘Point of Sale’ computer system. She was typing it in slowly. When she got to ‘Glen Burnie’ just for the sake of making conversation I asked her do you know where that is.

She said “no”, and then said: “MD … so it must be in Minnesota”!

I was taken back.

I politely pointed out that there is NO ‘D’, at all, at all in ‘Minnesota’ (remembering that when I came to live in Maryland, in 1985, I had thought that the State abbreviation was ‘MA’).

She then said she did NOT know.

Wow.

I know there is a rigorous entrance exam to get into the USPS and they do get some training.

Plus, they do teach you the States in school.

Yes, it is true that school for her would have been some time ago. She is not as old as I, but she is not in her 20s.

I gently pointed out: Maryland, Maryland.

Ah!, was what I got.

I am puzzled. I feel BAD for her. She is very nice lady. Very kind. Maybe she had just checked out for the afternoon.

Never mind. NO HARM DONE. The computer knew exactly where MD was and the book was delivered to Patrice this noon, just as promised.
