We The Brits, Always GREAT, Are Truly FREE Again, Jan. 1, 2021 — I Waited A Very Long Time For This.

by Anura Guruge

THE Referendum, the 2nd Referendum, was in 2016. That was 4 years ago.

YES, we separated from the EU on January 1, 2020 (Brussels time) — BUT the final divorce decree was NOT until today.

But, now it is all done & dusted.

23:00 (11:00 pm) London time (mid-night in Brussels, Belgium) Brexit becomes totally & irrevocably FINAL. This is IT.

After nearly fifty years we are FINALLY FREE again.

The last 4-years, post the referendum, was torturous.

So much drama, so much duplicity, so much incompetence, so much heartache, so much intrigue.

But that is all in the past.

IT IS DONE.

BREXIT IS REAL.

We the Brits, Always GREAT, are totally FREE Again.

I am so, so happy & relieved.

What a great day.

So Proud Of My Fellow Brits For Feeling The U.S. ‘Pain’ From Across The Pond — THANK YOU.

by Anura Guruge

I was AMAZED then touch to see these U.K. demonstrations on TV.

Wow.

Thank YOU.

I am so proud of you.

If only we could get Boris to say some meaningful words. But, I understand why it is BEST if he stays silent.

Things are not good. It is a sad situation.

Thank YOU for the support. I truly appreciate it.

I Watched & Celebrated Brexit, LIVE, On Sky News, With My Likeminded Compatriots.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access my earlier post from today.

Though a reluctant ex-pat (for way too many decades) Brexit is dear to I. I never wanted my GREAT Britain (in which I had lived very contentedly since 1969) to join the E.U. As I explained in my earlier post of today, I wanted GREAT Britain to put MY COMMONWEALTH first and foremost. Commonwealth first. All other countries well below those of the Commonwealth. That is how it used to be. I am the proud & patriotic product of the British Commonwealth. I will not betray my roots and values.

I wanted to mark the occasion.

6pm Eastern was perfect. I was in front of our big TV at 5:58pm to celebrate. Made sure Teischan was with I. She understands Brexit. It was good.

I am GLAD. A relief.

But, I fully appreciate that the heavy lifting starts as of now.

WE The British Are FREE Again; ‘Brexit’ Has Finally Come — British INDEPENDENCE Day, 01/31/2020.

by Anura Guruge

Unlike many I am NOT a new Brexiter. I was always against MY beloved GREAT Britain joining the E.U. I wanted ‘Brexit‘ way back 44-years AGO in 1975. Yes, 1975 — 44-years ago. I proudly voted ‘NO’ in that 1st ‘Brexit’ referendum in 1975. I was among the 20% who wanted to leave at that juncture. But, WE, obviously, were RIGHT. It took the others 40-years to realize what we already knew.

I, for very obvious reasons, is a ‘Commonwealthist’. I want union, I want trade deals, I want mutual aid, I want ‘open’ borders — BUT with OUR GLORIOUS and proud British Commonwealth, first & foremost. Unlike, say Poland, we never, especially in 1973, needed a new trading block. We had the Commonwealth. We still do.

So, that has always been my primary rationale. British Commonwealth, first & foremost WITH GREAT BRITAIN always at the top. Never, first among equals.

Brexit is a good thing. Yes, I appreciate that we now have many hurdles ahead of us. That does scare I. I do NOT want GREAT Britain broken up! I want us united and standing firm with OUR Commonwealth.

I like open-borders BUT do NOT agree that being part of the EU is good for my Britain. I would rather have controlled immigration from Africa than from Ukraine. All immigrants to Britain must understand how to play cricket! That should be the criteria.

Boris Johnson is going to be GOOD FOR I. The UK Sterling Pound will be stronger which means that the two pensions I get from the UK will be slightly higher. It is not much so the increase will be marginal. But, better than a kick in the teeth. Boris will also be good for the stock market.

But, Boris scares I. So, I will have to keep an eye on him. Let’s start with Brexit. Lets see if he can make it happen.

Fingers crossed.

For NOW I am happy.

What Has Happened Or What Will Happen To Betelgeuse (In Orion) — When It Is 700 Light-Years Away.

by Anura Guruge

As soon as I saw the headline in the U.K. ‘Daily Mail’ I knew it was going to be amusing. To be fair, and to their credit, they did make a decent enough fist of trying to explain the ‘dilemma’.

And what is that ‘dilemma’. When we are talking about stars, including our own Sun, we have to factor in the delay it takes for light from it to reach us. In the case of the Sun it takes 8 minutes and 20 seconds. Has to do with the enormous distances involved and the speed of light (which, though very fast, is only ‘that’ fast). So, if something was to happen to the Sun it would be 8 minutes and 20 seconds before we saw anything. Just the laws of physics.

Betelgeuse is ~640 light years away. That means it takes light from Betelgeuse ~640 years to arrive to us, on Earth.

So, we are seeing Betelgeuse as it was ~640 years ago!

Think about that.

When looking at stars we are always looking way back … into history.

We just have NO, NO, NO WAY of knowing what is happening at Betelgeuse right now.

All we see is what happened ~640 years ago.

So, it is difficult to write about ‘future’ events involving stars. The event might have already happened! We just don’t know.

That is the problem with this article. Betelgeuse could have already exploded — without us knowing.

Think about it. It is cool. SMILE.

P.S., All the stars that make up Orion are not the same distance away from us!

Betelgeuse is much closer than most of the others in that constellation! Something else to think about.

I Think I Am ‘OK’ With “Boris Johnson’s” Monumental Win In The UK — Because I So, So Badly Want ‘Brexit’.

by Anura Guruge

From the BBC. This was an historic win.

I like open-borders BUT do NOT agree that being part of the EU is good for my Britain.

As such I am glad that Boris Johnson won and that he COULD now make Brexit a reality — though I am not, yet, convinced that it is a forgone conclusion. Anything could still happen.

I am infamous in the U.S., over the last 17-years as a bleeding-heart democrat. But, NOTE I was careful to say 17-years.

I was a Regan-worshipping Republican prior to that — and I used ‘worshipping’ advisedly.

Way back, before I turned 21, I was a Bernie Sanders! Yes …

But, then I started making money. SMILE.

I was accused of being to THE RIGHT of (Dear) Margaret Thatcher.

Though I became a Democrat in the U.S. (and worked like a black to get Obama elected), I have never sympathized with ‘Labor’ in the U.K.

Crazy, isn’t it.

But, the UK and US political spectrums are different. For a start the UK already has a sacrosanct single-payer medical system open to all, the NHS. So, come UK politics I have never had a major issue with the UK Conservatives.

‘Downton Abbey’ T-Shirt From The UK, Not From ‘The Exhibition’.

by Anura Guruge

T-shirt sold at ‘Downton Abbey — The Exhibition’

Saying that Teischan (13) is a ‘Downton‘ aficionado and devotee doesn’t still quite get to her relationship with this show. We quite like it too, but not to the extent she has. She has watched all of it — i.e., all the seasons and all the episodes — at least twice (and I am glad that we have unlimited access to the shows thanks to Amazon Prime).

Yes, of course, we went to ‘The Exhibition‘ in Boston, last month. Yes, I got her a T-shirt and some other stuff. Luckily I did not have to get her any of the books since I had already got them for her over the last two Christmases.

By the MAGIC of Facebook an Ad. for the black T-shirt appeared on my timeline the day after we went to ‘The Exhibition’. It is scary. It quoted quite an attractive “can’t go wrong” price. Well, that was just a bait-and-switch price. In the end with shipping it was twice as much.

It looks classy. She likes it.

Came from the U.K. UPS. Took a few weeks.

So, if you are into ‘Downton‘ and want a T-shirt to coincide with the movie (next week) you will have to get one of these.

British Low-Carb Diet Advocated By The U.K. “Daily Mail”.

There was no surprises here. This is basically what I have been following for the last 6-years! Yes, 6-years.

Yes, I have cheated off-and-on. Not majorly. Went through a face of snacking heavily on nuts. I have cut that out since my knee injury since that has curtailed the amount of exercise, i.e., running, I can do.

As it says, this is not too hard to adhere to.

Just wanted to share with you.

The U.K. Gets Its First Conviction On A ‘Female Genital Mutilation’ (FGM) Case.

by Anura Guruge

Click for the ‘NPR’ original.

Click to ENLARGE and read. Dedication on my “Orgasms 101” book.

This is good news, but at the same time very sad and frustrating.

Yes, this mutilation of a then 3-year old girl, of African parents, happened in 2017. What is infuriating is that it is still happening, even in the U.K.

Getting convictions have been hard and it is likely that they would not have succeeded in the U.S.!

I am against any and all forms of bodily mutilation — whether it be circumcision, tattoos or piercings — even ear-piercing. I have refused to let my daughters get their ears pierced until they were 12 and old enough to know what they were doing. Actually, I would never consent to it, but they gang up on me. As for circumcision — I consider that child abuse. No parent has the right to circumcise their son. Period.

Well, given that I dedicated my 2015 “Orgasms 101” book to those trying to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), my stance on this is crystal clear. It is barbaric and I can’t even understand how a mother could do it.

This is but a painful first step. I just wish we could eradicate it …. Period.

Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” On “Acorn TV” Is Classic — Very Watchable.

by Anura Guruge

Of course Agatha Christie sure know how to spin out a good murder-mystery story and this is very much a classic. We saw it on Acorn and decided to watch it without knowing that the “The Guardian” (UK) had called it the “TV Event of the Year”. I can appreciate the excitement.

We have not watched all three episodes to the end. We are about 10-minutes into the second one and we know that we will finish it the next time we are watching TV.

Very artistic in parts too. The figurines of the ’10 soldiers’ are a work of art. Wow. I would love to have them.

Definitely watch it if you can. Yes, yes, very British and period — but what would you expect from dear Agatha.
