Using 22mm ‘Quick Release’ Straps With A Garmin Fenix 6 Rather Than ‘Quick Fit’.

by Anura Guruge

This is not rocket science & I am sure that many of you probably are already doing this — i.e., using ‘Quick Release’ with Garmin rather than the Garmin recommended ‘Quick Fit‘ — with impunity.

The difference between the two is that the ‘Quick Release’ has its own BUILT-IN pin(/bar) while ‘Quick Fit’ snaps onto a pin(/bar) already on the watch. To use ‘Quick Release’ with a Gramin all you have to do is remove the pin(/bar). On Fenix 6 Pros (& equivalents) this is a piece of cake. The pin(/bar) is an industry-standard tension bar. You can remove it with your fingernails without any tools. On some Garmins you will have to use a ‘special’ screwdriver.

Why bother with ‘Quick Release’ when there are plenty of ‘Quick Fit’ bands out there. Four reasons:

  1. They tend to be cheaper — for a given material, e.g., silicone, leather, nylon etc.
    ….
  2. The absence of the ‘clip’ makes them slightly lighter & easier on the skin.
    ….
  3. More variety.
    ….
  4. Fancier straps, like this shown below (SMILE).

Samsung ‘Watch 3’ A Tantalizing Display, BUT Not Ready For Primetime & NO Match For Garmin Fenix 6.

by Anura Guruge

Samsung Watch 3 on its own.

Samsung Watch 3 (on right) next to Garmin Fenix 6
— both titanium.

The display on the Samsung ‘Watch 3’ is absolutely BRILLIANT — in every way, & the much-vaunted rotating bezel is just great. But, beyond that the Watch 3 disappoints.

Yes, I am comparing it to a Garmin Fenix 6 — which is a more expensive watch. I appreciate & acknowledge that. But, I discovered today, to my cost & chagrin, that you can’t move from a Garmin Fenix 6 to the Watch 3. Just doesn’t cut it.

Here are the MAIN things I found beyond trying:

  1. That beautiful display becomes UNREADABLE when outside, in Sun, because Samsung has a stupid “Outdoor Mode” which dims the screen — BUT there is NO WAY you can turn this off or adjust the brightness. That started to drive me crazy.
  2. Yes, plenty of gorgeous watch faces but many do NOT offer any customization — & those that do still limit your flexibility. Look at the watch face (ActiFace) I have on my Fenix 6. I could not get all that info on a Samsung face. I really missed sunrise/sunset (which is only available on SOME faces).
  3. Even with ‘Always On’ watch face goes dark!
    ….
  4. ECG functionality ONLY available with a Samsung phone & I don’t have one. That was a killer.
    ….
  5. Getting navigational APPs was difficult.

Bottom line was that the Watch 3 is 75% — ‘pretty display’, BUT even that is muddied by the stupid “Outdoor Mode” & erratic “Aways On”.

Yes, it would have been very different IF I wasn’t coming from a Fenix 6. If it is to be your first smartwatch you will probably LOVE it. SMILE.

Samsung ‘Watch 3’ Side-by-Side On My Wrist With Garmin ‘Fenix 6 Pro Solar’ — Both Titanium.

by Anura Guruge

Garmin (bigger, less bright) on LEFT.

I had to try it, viz., the Samsung ‘Watch 3’. And if I was going to try it, it had to be Titanium.  I am a sucker for BOTH AMOLED displays & Titanium. Well, Samsung indulges I, but alas Garmin only gives me Titanium.

I do like the display on the Samsung. To I that is the MAIN reason to get it. Very different watches. The Garmin, of course more expensive, is feature & function rich. But, now the irony. At 67 what I do MAINLY is walk/hike & clock up elevation (i.e., ‘floors’). The Samsung can handle that, plus Heart Rate & blood oxygen saturation. Supposedly it can do VO2 MAX but I haven’t found it. Plus, it has watch faces galore.

Yes, battery life, especially with the ‘Always On Display’ I INSIST on, ON, is appalling! I keep on charging it when I am seated — typing!

Well, lets see how it works out. Not my first Samsung Smartwatch. I treated myself at Christmas 2017 to a Samsung ‘Frontier S3’. But, I hardly worse it & eventually sold it, for a good price, on eBay. So, who knows. I will keep you posted.

New ‘Garmin Fenix 6 Solar’ Side-by-Side With ‘Fenix 6 Pro’, Both Titanium (One Black, Other Silver).

by Anura Guruge

The Black Titanium Solar
on its own.

Very similar. The BLACK is the SOLAR.

IF you look at image #1 (right at top) you will see a THIN ‘band’ between the glass face and the bezel. That is ONE of the solar collectors. That is SUPPOSED to be a 100% collector — i.e., collects all sunlight that falls on it.

FUNNY thing. In these picture the Silver Pro looks like it is BIGGER. It is not. It is fractionally smaller. In terms of watch diameters they are BOTH the same. The Solar is 0.4mm thicker. I noticed that right away. Display size is ALSO the SAME.

The titanium case WEIGHT is THE SAME, also.

I am ‘returning’ the Titanium band to my friends at ‘HeartRateMonitors USA‘. I hate metal bands on Garmin. Kind of feels stupid (& I wore a Rolex for 26-years).

So, that is the story so far. I will keep you posted.

The ‘Garmin Fenix 6 Solar’ Carbon Grey Titanium Comes In A Fancy BIG Box.

Vast improvement on the
Blue/White‘ model that I hated
& returned within the day!

The ‘blue/white’ came in the STANDARD,
fairly small & compact
Garmin Box.

NOT as fancy, by far, as the HUGE
plastic box Garmin uses with
the MARQ.

Amusing & cute. Yes, Garmin is, of course, trying to JUSTIFY the $1,099.99 price. Hhmmm. $229 of that is the strap. Heavy unfunctional strap! I am sending the strap back to ‘heartratemonitorsUSA‘. Yes, I evaluate watches for them. SMILE.

Nice enough watch. Far, far superior looking to the butt ugly ‘blue/white’ one. I cannot believe I initially picked it.

TRUTH be told, I WISH Garmin had made the SILVER Titanium as with the MARQ or my other Fenix 6. The Silver Titanium looks REAL good. My favorite. But, I can live with this one. SMILE.

I Am RETURNING My ‘Garmin Fenix 6 Solar’, After Less Than A Day — UGLIEST, UGLIEST Watch I Ever Saw!

by Anura Guruge

With my OTHER Titanium Fenix 6 (Left)
— which looks pretty classy.

The SOLAR is on the RIGHT.

Garmin Marketing of the Fenix 6 Solar.

In the box, USPS label printed … ready to ship Monday.

On I did NOT get it on a whim. I gave it a LOT of thought. My criteria were simple & defensible:

  1. I wanted Titanium. I decided last year I am going to standardize on Titanium.
    —-
  2. The Solar Titanium is ONLY available in two options: this white one & a black one with a METAL STRAP.
    —-
  3. I hate metal straps. I didn’t want to get a watch, priced $150 more, with a $230 band that I did NOT want (though that is what is now going to happen).
    —-
  4. Garmin featured the white model — as you can see above — so I assumed it would be decent, in person (& it wasn’t).
    —-

As soon as I opened the box I knew I was in trouble! It looked TACKY & terrible. Butt ugly.

I hoped it would grow on I.

It did NOT.

If anything it got worse. It physically repulsed me! It made me ‘sick’ to just look at it. NOT WORTH IT.

It had to go.

Not sure what Garmin is thinking.

This white watch looks like a $5 BLING watch!

It is really tacky.

Yes, my plan is to get the BLACK Titanium. I will keep you posted.

The SOLAR is on the RIGHT.

The solar, on the RIGHT on three of these, is a bit chunkier — which I guess was to be expected. Not so much wider, as noticeably taller.

I do NOT like it! The white is STUPID. Ugliest watch I have ever encountered. I am embarrassed to wear it. I kid you not.

I got it because it was TITANIUM & it was the model Garmin was featuring in its writeups. But, it is BUTT UGLY. Yikes. That was a mistake. Why don’t I return it. Because it was basically given to I — & I don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. BUT, if YOU WANT a real, real, real good deal on a hardly used Fenix 6 Solar let me know. SMILE.

So, that is my take. SMILE.

I Am, Of Course, Getting A ‘Garmin Fenix 6 Solar’ — Thanks, Of Course, To ‘Heartrate Monitors USA’.

Click to access ‘HRM USA’ Website.

Thanks to ‘HRM USA‘ I have been able to enjoy every single Garmin Fenix model since the ‘5’. Yes: Fenix 5, Fenix 5 Plus, Fenix 6, Fenix 6 Pro & now the Solar. SMILE. I am lucky, & I know it. They even got me a Garmin MARQ Explorer — though, to the amazement of both sides, I asked them to exchange it for a Fenix 6 Pro!

I have asked for this new Titanium model. That was the one lasting impression from the MARQ. I am hooked on titanium. It looks different. Not sure about the blue, but it sure will be different too.

Of course I will keep you posted.

I can’t say I am surprised. This is an outlandish extravaganza — though there are a lot of folks out there who could easily afford it. But, to be honest I don’t see why it would be compelling and that comes from a man who traded in his MARQ Expedition for a second Garmin Fenix 6, albeit the second in Titanium.

Would love to know how many Garmin has really sold. Garmin made it very clear that they were targeting it for Christmas. Well, Christmas has come and gone.

Well, I guess they still have two other opportunities: Chinese New Year and, of course, Valentine’s. Hence, I will keep on checking over the next couple of weeks and keep you posted. Would be a hoot if they do sell all 100 by Valentine’s.

Keep fingers crossed. SMILE.

I do keep track of my Activity Trackers.
