Feeding Seagulls — Permitted At ‘Hampton Beach’, New Hampshire.

by Anura Guruge

Despite the far from amenable weather, we went to ‘Hampton Beach‘, yesterday, for Mother’s Day — and as is our new wont had a lunch (and a very good one at that (as we knew would be the case)) at ‘Jumpin’ Jack Java‘. Then, we promenaded the ‘boulevard’. On the way back we saw a number of people casually feeding the seagulls. I had to stop and take some pictures.

But, that got me wondering.

Folks feeding seagulls at a public beach. That can’t be kosher.

So, at the next notice board I stopped to read it to see if there were any signs that said ‘No Feeding The Seagull‘. Nada. No signs.

We were walking by the ‘Chamber of Commerce’ office and stopped to inquire.

NO LAWS about feeding seagulls.

I guess this is ‘Live Free, Or Die‘ New Hampshire.

When I got home, I, of course, Googled. I was shocked. Being able to feed seagulls with impunity is quite common in the U.S. of A. WOW. I never realized.

I would have thought that feeding seagulls was a really bad idea. You are making associate humans with food. And I have seen seagulls attack humans. 45-years ago, on Mumbles Beach, near Swansea, in Wales, I had a seagull brazingly dive in and steal my piece of fried cod from the ‘fish-and-chips’ I had just purchased. I was not a happy camper.

I need to keep an eye on this. I am fairly sure that seagulls can be a real nuisance once them get used to too much human dependance. I will also have to check what the story is at other places — like Acadia. So, stay tuned.

Though he died when I was but 3-months old, I in my late teens felt I had a special connection to him in that I lived in Uplands, Swansea — in “Uplands House“, no less — across the road from where he was born.

I outlined much of that in this December 7, 2015 post. I don’t see a point in rehashing it again. You can just read it in the older post. {Thank You}

Here is his very-Welsh voice.

I am SO proud.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I would expect from dear ol’ Swansea.

BRAVO! Kudos. Thank YOU.

You made my day, albeit not got the first time.

In my day, which was 40 years ago, their claim to academic fame was in the area of ‘finite element mechanics‘ — now known as ‘finite element method‘.

Wild dogs sneezing! Wow.

Way to go.

I guess they will NOW have to research whether the Russians try to interfere with this voting with fake sneezing.

This is so cool and PERSONAL on multiple fronts.

Swansea is my emotional home — the place that I grew up, in so many ways. I attended the University (College) of Swansea from September 1971 to June 1974. It was GREAT period of my life. I had a BALL.

Know Mumbles well. Used to go down for chips, the scenery and the seagulls that loved to steal the chips.

That whole bay, see below, has one of the largest tidal reaches in the World.

I Am Probably The Last Person Swansea University Would Want Seen In This Sweatshirt.

When I got the unsolicited e-mails pushing these “Swansea University” sweatshirts, most likely because I say on Facebook that I do have a B. Sc. (Hons) from Swansea, I could not resist.

I have fond memories of Swansea, 1971 – 1974. I had a blast.

It wasn’t, to be fair, “Swansea University” 40-years ago. It was the “University College of Swansea” affiliated with the “University of Wales“. It was actually better than that. It was, as you can below, on my actual graduation certificate, was “Cambria“, the Latin name for Wales from the Welsh original “Cymru“.

The certificate below spells it all out, classically, in Latin. What it does not say is what subject I got my degree in. Cute. It was Computer Technology.

Nice sweatshirt. Nice material.

I got it, as a targeted Ad on Facebook given that Facebook knows that I graduated from Swansea (in 1974).

Clever. Of course you can do this for any and all universities and they probably have. But I am unlikely to find too many from Swansea in these parts and 99% of the folks around here will have no idea as to where ‘Swansea‘ is.

I am hoping that I might get one of these for Christmas. Might be too late. It would be cool.

Now that I am irrevocably associated with Kati Preston’s near-Best Seller “Holocaust to Healing: Closing the Circle” I am getting Holocaust related material on my e-mail. This one, on Thursday, was from UNESCO. I could NOT ignore that. UNESCO was a BIG part of my life for 17 years. They paid for some of my education; e.g. Swansea
