I Have A Feeling That Amazon Will Split, 10-to-1, Before Jeff Bezos Leaves — But I Could Be Wrong.

by Anura Guruge

Just a hunch. But, I could be wrong. It doesn’t really matter to I. As some of you know I have BIG into AMZN for many, many year. That said, I do like splits. Why? Two reasons, both of which were amply demonstrated with Tesla’s split last year. These being:

  1. News of the split will drive the price up. It shouldn’t, but it always does! So, that would be fun. Yes, the price will fall, but the run-up is exciting & some can profit majorly — though not I. I rarely sell any AMZN shares. I am in AMZN for the long-haul.
  2. A 10-to-1 split will open up MORE opportunities for option trading. That is the BIG DRAW as far as I am concerned. You can ONLY trade options in 100-share blocks. With AMZN’s $3,000+ price amassing 100-shares is expensive –> $300,000! But, following a 10-to-1 split it would be 10 times easier. SMILE. You will only need $30,000. HUGE difference. I talked about this with TSLA. Yes, I benefited from this with TSLA. Think about it.

As the stock chart above shows there has NOT been a split of AMZN this millenia! It has been over 20-years. At $3,000+ the price is ripe for a split, & 10-to-1 sounds good to 1. Even a 5-to-1 will not be bad.

However, I think that Jeff Bezos’ departure in June is the real catalyst & motivation. Jeff has already wrought miracles in terms of both the company & AMZN stock price. But, a split prior to his departure will give the AMZN price another spike. That would still be under Jeff’s tenure. When history is written that spike will also be credited to him. So, rather than leave when AMZN was at (say) $3,250, it might go as high as $4,500 (pre-split). Will make Jeff’s legacy that much richer. Think about it. SMILE.

Snow That Split My Tree In Half MIGHT Help Heal It Now That I Bolted It Back.

by Anura Guruge

Bolting the two halves together.

The two halves are well supported & I have numerous bolts & nails holding them together. BUt, since the split is only about 18″ from the ground I had been thinking of building a small retaining wall around the tree & filling it with earth & fertilizer. Basically burying the wound underground so that it could heal in peace. Maybe take root. But, first I had to let the snow melt.

Then yesterday we got 20″ more of snow. The split is buried. To make sure we shoveled more snow around the tree. So, now we have a mound of snow around the tree. The wound, packed in Miracle Grow, is well buried. This might help. It sure will NOT do any harm. Of that I am sure. It will be March, the earliest, before all that snow around the tree will melt. Then I can go ahead with my retaining wall.

The tree at night.

Bolting Together A Tree That Split In Half During Last Week’s Heavy Snowstorm.

by Anura Guruge

This is our so called ‘Family Tree’. We planted it, in front of the house, about 12-years ago, within a year of moving in (or so). It was knee high to begin with. It has grown tall, but it is lanky.

IF you look closely at the pictures you will see black tar. That limb had separated, albeit still attached, a few years ago. I strapped it tight, propped it up & nursed it back to health again. It healed & mended.

Then, not last weekend, but the one before that, in the huge snowstorm we had, with very heavy snow — it split & separated.

It has been lying on the ground since then. Today was the first day I could get to it BECAUSE of my cataract surgery! I was not supposed to do anything strenuous. Today was NOT the best day to do this. IT WAS COLD. Plus, I didn’t have many to help me.

So getting someone to hold it straight & tight was a problem. I wish I could have had more help. But, I think I can prevail.

I have filled the gap with Miracle Grow & a sugar mixture. I have some stuff coming from Amazon. I think the cold/winter will help. The tree is dormant. I will get working in the Spring. I will keep you updated.

I have had luck with fixing trees. This tree is now close to 30′. I planted it 13-years ago, when it was about 4′ high. During its 2nd winter it too got hit by snow & ice. I bound it back together. You can see how it has healed. That is the ‘hole’. It was in two. I joined it back together. It is one mighty & healthy tree.

I also fixed one of its branches. NO. NO. Not the one that is now broken. The one below it! I was supporting the injured one on the branch that is now broken. This one will be easy to fix. Smile.

IF You Bought ‘Tesla’ (TSLA) On Tuesday, When I ‘Implied’, YOU Would Have Made $200(+) A SHARE!

You Can STILL Get The ‘Tesla’ (TSLA) 5-for-1 Stock Split Post Aug. 21 — Even Today.

by Anura Guruge

The STATED August 21, 2020 ‘ex-dividend’ date for getting the 5-for-1 stock split is ‘BOGUS’! SMILE.

I even checked with Fidelity.

While a stock split is considered a dividend it doesn’t work as with a normal monetary dividend. With a monetary dividend IF you BUT after the ex-dividend day, you don’t get the dividend, just the stock. The seller gets to keep the dividend.

Doesn’t work with a stock split, BECAUSE ALL the shares are SPLITTING.

Yes, I bought some. SMILE. I have been LONG on TSLA for years. I first bought TSLA, 4- or 5-years ago when it was $380. SMILE. Did NOT buy many. SMILE. Earlier this year I added a BIT (& bough TSLA for both kids. SMILE). Today I sold ‘bits-&-bobs’ & bought a bit more TSLA. Enough. Now, after the split, this Saturday I will have a ‘decent’ amount. YES, the actual NUMBER of shares matter IF you are an ADDICTED option trader like I. Smile. [P.S., If you could see my kids’ portfolios. SMILE. High risk, HIGH rewards. SMILE.]

Just thought I will share this with you.

August 21, 2020 day meant NOTHING.

You can carry on buying TSLA till 4:00pm on Friday, August 28, 2020 & still get the 5-for-1 split.

It is ‘OK’. You do NOT have to thank me. This is what I do. SMILE.

When Netflix (NFLX) and Apple (APPL) split.
Charts from Yahoo finance. Click to ENLARGE.

With over 30 years of investing behind me I am now savvy enough to know that stock splits — or even reverse stock splits — don’t change the essential economic or operational dynamics of the underlying company. Splits are essentially artificial and contrived mechanisms to rejig the price of  a stock into a more ‘acceptable’ trading range.

I, as a proud and v. happy Amazon shareholder, expect AMZN to be approaching $800 by March 2016 — and my very active, even frenzied, option trading on AMZN reflects that. SMILE.

And for the last few weeks I have realized, innately, that an AMZN stock split could be likely, as was the case with APPL and NFLX, when the price gets into the $700 range.

But a AMZN stock split does NOT fill me with joy. Yes, even a 3-for-1 split would ensure that I would be able to claim that I own thousands of AMZN shares — and yes, that would further increase my stock option trading options (if you know what I mean). SMILE.

But, after years of pondering, the split-issue I finally have a concrete answer as to why I do NOT like splits of EXPENSIVE stock — like AMZN.

It brings in the WRONG CLASS of investor!

Sorry. It is not a question of being snobbish, it is a matter of safeguarding one’s assets.

At $600 – $700 you can keep away the casual, uninformed (if not totally clueless) retail investor. And that means you don’t get silly gyrations.

At $70 everybody and their dog thinks that they can own 100 shares — and then we get into the knee-jerk, totally irrational trading.

IF you study the NFLX chart, carefully, you will see that the split didn’t do the serious, long-term investors, such as I, any favors — though it made option trading more exciting.

I am fairly resigned to the fact that AMZN will most likely split in 2016. Yes, I will play options like crazy around the split since there will always be the totally meaningless SPIKE in price ahead of and just after the split. Well, you can’t win them all.

eBay PayPal (PYPLV) Split — ‘Ex-Div’ Date Monday, July 20, 2015 — Strictly Dollar-for-Dollar Split

eBay chart. Click to access ‘MarketWatch’ coverage.

The PayPal spinoff from eBay takes place at ‘midnight’ this Friday, July 17, 2015. But the ‘ex-div’ date is July 20.

So you can still buy eBay shares TODAY, Wednesday, July 15, 2015, and get the PayPal spinoff — PYPLV.

PYPLV is ‘trading’ now BUT there are NO shares available. So you are essentially pre-buying the shares!

I owned a few eBay from years back. So I will get some PYPLV on Monday whether I want them or not. I want them. I actually just bought a couple more eBay shares. Way I see it, it is the best way to get into PYPLV.

The split on Monday will be ‘dollar-for-dollar’. Both eBay and PYPLV are trading. So if eBay on Monday is $66 and PYPLV is at $34 — after the split PYPLV will remain (for a few nanoseconds) at $34 and eBay will start off at $32. Essentially OLD $eBay = NEW $eBay + $PYPLV. Got that?
