‘Active Telephones Inc.’ — Leader In 1970s Snail-Paced, Unsecured Hotel Wi-Fi!

by Anura Guruge

Active Telephones Inc.‘, of Milford, Connecticut, is SO, SO BAD that you can’t even call them a joke. They are beyond that.

I stayed at the Mystic, CT, ‘Ramada Inn‘ earlier this week. The hotel had some issues due to poor management but was ‘OK’ (for the price) BAR the APPALLING Wi-Fi provided (if you could call it that) by bloody ‘Active Telephones Inc.’.

For a START you couldn’t sign into the bloody Wi-Fi with Chrome! Chrome was TOO secure. That is crazy.

So if you are using Android, as we do, you could JUST about, after 30 attempts, sign-on IF you had the Android Browser on your device.

And then the speed.

It was like using 64Kbps dial-up in the 1970s.

The hotel staff keep on telling you to call Active’s Hotline at: 866-747-2226. I tried. There was NEVER an answer. No voice mail. It rang and rang and rang forever. Dreadful.

I have just trashed the hotel, all over the Web, because of this stupid W-Fi. As you know I am no stranger to hotels. Though retired I still stay in more hotels than most. This is the WORST Wi-Fi I have ever encountered.

The Manager of the Ramada, who claims his name is “Robert“, promised me $10 off my bill for the LACK of Wi-Fi. Well that did NOT happen (as yet). Empty promise.

Stay AWAY from this dreadful company, ‘Active Telephons Inc.’ and stay away from the Mystic, CT, Ramada.

Fuji X-Pro2 Update: No Firmware Update As Yet, 150 Shot Battery Life Claim & 83% Rating By DPReview.

by Anura Guruge

DPReview 83% rating. Click to ENLARGE and goggle here. You can find the original review (thorough as ever) at: dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-x-pro2/10

As I have already made clear the Fujifilm X-Pro2 leaves me cold. The only reason that I appear to obsessively follow it is because it is, by any measure, the precursor to my much anticipated dream camera — the yet to be announced Fuji X-T2. So that is the deal.

The X-Pro2, per Amazon & B&H, doesn’t start shipping till next week, March 20, 2016. Yes, I know that there were ‘pre-production’ models. That said I am slightly leery of the reviews that I see at B&H. Yes, of course they may have got the cameras by some means. But last September I saw many ‘bogus’ reviews getting posted on Amazon for the Sony RX10 II BEFORE the camera was shipping. That might not be the case on B&H but I am, as ever, cautious.

There are two reviews of the X-Pro2, at B&H, that are of concern. One is that posted above talking about a 150 shot battery life in ‘high performance’ and the throwaway comment, right at the end, that the “camera speed throughout is noticeably slower”. Aahh? The third review, a 3-star one (by a supposed Pro photographer with an impressive stable of Fuji cameras) is frightening. He confirms the ‘custom menu reset’ problem we have already heard about BUT claims it happens when you swap batteries. Yikes! That is why I was checking to see if Fuji has done a Firmware update as yet. They haven’t.

The DPReview 83% is, from what I know, above average. From what I have seen most ‘good’ cameras get 82%. So this is a tad higher. BUT JPEG image quality and ‘metering focus’ do not get outstanding ratings. That is scary.

Anywho. Hope all of this in one place, with the necessary links, helps.

GoDaddy EMail: Thursday, March 10, 2016 — Very Slow Loading E-mails.

by Anura Guruge

So 4 days ago, on Sunday, it was down for hours. Today it is noticeably slow — when you are trying to open an e-mail, even if it is all test.

Just a heads up. Usually GoDaddy gets around to fixing whatever the problem is (though they will deny having a problem if you call them) within 12 to 24 hours.

I will keep you posted. Just grin and bear it. SMILE.

I have been telling you since Monday. And YOU have NOT done anything.

Check your bandwidth. You will NOT be getting much more than 8.5Mbps. So if you are paying for the 15Mbps service, as I do, you are getting screwed.

I have raised 3 Trouble Tickets. When it is all fixed I will GET a full refund. Of that there will be no doubt or debate. I have got it before and I will get it again. I document all such outages and slowdowns, and just to make sure, RAISE trouble tickets. Then I call up and DEMAND a refund and they know that the law is on my side. SMILE.

So, I suggest you do the same. This is not right, unless you ENJOY being SCREWED by TDS.

Yes, it is official. After 7 phone calls I finally got an admission today.

Yes, one of their main routers is down and another is working at half speed. That is the MAIN problem. They have some other issues too.

At least 100 customers, which includes ME, will CONTINUE to be starved of bandwidth. They will TRY to improve matters tonight.

But the CPU board they require to fix the main router is on order and it will be a FEW days.

Heads up. Check your bandwidth. When it is all done I will ask and get a LARGE REFUND. Of that there will be no doubt or debate. Not paying for bandwidth I am NOT getting. You should do the same.

I Am Returning My $269 Refurbished Canon G1 X, It Is Way TOO Slow For Me.

The $269 Refurbished Canon G1 X, I got directly from Canon, takes some amazing, very clear, very sharp pictures with vivid color. It is really good at taking facial pictures. I was very impressed with the image quality.

But, when it came to me, a well documented Type Hyper-AAA +++ person, it was WAY TOO slow between shots. It is rated at 1.9 shots per second but I never saw anything that quick. You take a picture and you want to review it. It takes forever. You get this black screen saying ‘BUSY’. I just can’t deal with that. Life is too short to waste peering at a black LCD for it to display the image I want to see.

So, great little (but heavy) camera. Loved it. Just did NOT like the lag time between shots — or at least between shots in my type of shooting, i.e., take a picture, make sure it is OK, then move to the next. Yes, I am sure if I held the shutter down it would take pictures fairly rapidly. But I do not do that often. I like to see what I shot before I move on. That way I can take another to correct any problems.

So I am back to the drawing board. What next?

Again taken with Canon G1 X.

Short Microsoft (MSFT) — Windows 10 Is Riddled With ‘Critical Errors’.

critical error101

Deanna ‘upgraded’ from Windows 7 to Window 10 and it proved to be an unmitigated DISASTER! Windows 10 is absolutely riddled with SERIOUS — nay, CRITICAL — errors and it is slower than frozen molasses.

Basic things like the START menu stop working or sometimes JUST DISAPPEARS. Yes, the START MENU goes away. I found a fix for that on YouTube and that worked.

Then two days ago, about a week after we fixed the missing START menu problem, she started getting the above CRITICAL message. We spent many hours, to no avail, trying to fix that. I gave up. She, quite rightly, detests Windows 10. So I gave her the restore disk for her laptop and within about an hour, while we watched family TV, her ASUS laptop was back running Windows 7 — and everything is noticeably faster.

Check the Web. Windows 10 has serious problems. Lot of folks are doing what Deanna did. Reverting back to Windows 8 or Windows 7.

This is bad. It is a disaster. I, from day one, had a sneaking suspicion that we would start having issues like this with Satya Nadella. I don’t think he will last long BUT it looks like that he will drive MSFT even further into the ground before they boot him out.

I don’t understand WHY this is NOT getting reported in the financial media, e.g., CNBC and MarketWatch! Definitely looks like a coverup. Are they getting paid by Nadella to keep this under wraps. But, trust me, this is NOT good news for Windows 10. This debacle with further sully the MSFT brand and convince even more people to ditch PCs and go with Apple or Android.

So, YOU have been warned. Do your due diligence. Google. Yes, Google.
