First Pictures With My New Full-Frame Sony a7 II — From Amazon/Cameta Camera.

by Anura Guruge

First 4 pictures — 001 to 004.

Shot as a full-resolution JPEG
6000 x 4000 (4.9MB)
but reduced here to
1600 x 1067 (434KB).

No post-processing.
Straight-out-of-camera JPEG.

EXIF data from tools.science.si showing that this camera was BRAND new; i.e., no previous shutter actuations. That is a RELIEF. I am happy. I always worry that I might end up getting a previously used camera sold as ‘new’. Not so in this case.

I bought it from Amazon (given my wonderful relationship with them) though it was supplied by Cameta Camera as a bundle. I have a history with Cameta and I thought long and hard about it. The bundle was worth getting IF nothing else but for the ‘free’ Sony 64GB SD card, battery and Vivitar filters.

It worked out. I am HAPPY.

So on the first picture, i.e., ‘001’, it was ZERO shutter actuations.

Being I, I checked it on the 5th picture too. Shutter actuations are counted starting at 0. Hence why it is ‘4’ rather than ‘5’.

Did I say I was HAPPY?

Unpacking the Sony a7 II …

Getting this Sony a7 II was a BIG DEAL for I!

Why?

Because it has taken me 1 year and 7 months to make this move!

Yes, 1 year and 7 months.

I reluctantly returned my 27-day old Sony a7 II on September 24, 2015 because I ran into a file-corruption issue.

From then onwards I have been procrastinating about my NEXT BIG camera.

I was, to be honest, waiting for the Fuji XT-2. Then I decided I did NOT like Fuji.

So …

That is how I ended up with the Sony a7 II.

So far, I am happy with it.

It has quite the FEEL. It feels like a REAL camera. It has all the dials and buttons I like.

Very satisfying shutter CLUNK.

It is big and heavy. So I still have to get a Sony a6500 to take to shows etc.

So, this was day 1. Hopefully I will keep this camera for some time. {SMILE}

This, from the obligatory and brilliantly done “Mummer’s Play”, captures very high quality of the costumes and overall production.

This red Welsh dragon was a Masterpiece.

Not sure why the two poles for holding up the large arms had to be so long. Maybe it was for balance though I have to think that the physicists that can be readily found in Cambridge could have come up with a way to make the poles shorter.

Great sequence.

Well we actually have two cars that do qualify, the 1989 black V-12 XJS and the 1968 British Racing Green MGB. Though they are both in great shape and has it happened Devanee & I took them both out for a spin today, neither are in real show condition and I never plan to get them as such. To me the joy and point of having these cars is to drive them — as much as I can, and we do.

Plus this Summer I learnt something else about myself. I really have no interest taking my car to car shows. No it is not a case of sour grapes in that I do have two cars that would be admired by many at shows. It is just that having people look at my cars and having to answer questions about them doesn’t really turn me on. Yes, as ever, it also comes down to TIME. I would rather drive the cars than have them sitting around. So we haven’t gone to any shows though we could have gone to plenty. But I might enter the XJS in the Sandwich Fair parade. Will have to get Deanna to look into that.

Anywho. Thought you might want to know about this show. Enjoy.

I actually talked to the Hopkins Center’s extremely motivated and energetic Publicity Coordinator/Writer, Rebecca Bailey, about this yesterday. Appears that you can’t even get the band to perform further than 100 miles from West Point even if you offered to pay ‘all’ the costs — since the Pentagon insists that there are still ‘hidden’ costs that are being incurred.

This is a shame.

This, ‘stick to the public, to make them squeal’ stuff with the sequestration, does not sit well with me. This is D.C. playing games with us. Yes, I am totally in favor of them cutting expenditure and increasing revenues. But, this petty sequestration stuff is pathetic and is just trying to get a raise out of the public — when the only thing they should trying to raise is taxes.

The Band can’t make it to Dartmouth but how much foreign aid are they giving to Israel and Egypt this year? Yes, MY PRESIDENT should stop using the gas guzzling ‘Air Force 1’ as if it was a golf cart. Scale back on his trips or use a more cost effective plane. If you look at some of the cuts, in addition to the White House tours, Military Bands and the Blue Angels, they are all to do with the elderly, the poor and kids. This is crazy. There are 30,000 troops in the DMZ in Korea. In my estimation it would take about 20 minutes to achieve a successful and permanent regime change in North Korea. Rather than spending all this money they should just eliminate the North Korean ‘problem’ and just have a united Korea. That would save billions.

Yes, this stuff makes me livid. I hold MY PRESIDENT responsible for some of this. He loves to play his little games too. I guess we now have to wait for Hillary.

The good news is that the Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble is proceedings with their concert despite the let down. It should, as with everything Hopkins’ related, be another great concert. We won’t be able to make it, but I am sure it will be a blast.
