I Had My Knee Surgery, Which Was Miraculous, A Year Ago.

by Anura Guruge

These pictures from a year ago & the screenshot below,
from today,
tell you all that needs to be told.

The picture above is a testament to my recovery. I never realized that I had walked that far. Nearly 2,000 miles.

Knee feels great. I feel great.

Dr. Charles Blitzer who performed my surgery was NOT a surgeon. He was MAGICIAN.

I sent him an e-mail today and thanked him, profusely. He responded and thanked me for my kind words.

IF you ever need knee surgery (and I hope you never do), make sure it turns out like mine.

Best thing that happened to me in YEARS!

Thursday, February 28, 2019. I slipped on ice, in the morning, while shoveling snow after a snowstorm. Heard an almighty crack. Left knee was in pain and pretty useless. Did not know what had happened. Eventually got myself to the ER. I had totally busted my Quadricep Tendon. Never heard of it. Didn’t know I had one.

They were all set to operate on me the next day. I was not keen. I had a vacation booked in the Cape and, moreover, wanted some time to get my head around surgery. ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS I EVER MADE. With a brace, I could walk and the pain wasn’t too bad.

Pain was never too bad, prior to or post surgery. Never took any of the 60 opioid pills that I was given! Most I needed was TWO Aleve.

I walked, sometimes a mile or more, in the week prior to surgery.

Was on crutches for 6-weeks. I walked with the crutches and my Garmin Fenix 5 NEVER COUNTED those steps. So, I really walked MORE MILES! Smile.

I had my major knee surgery on March 7, 2019.

The busted knee was a wakeup call. Though I ran most days I had let my weight creep up to 176 lbs. Not good. My blood glucose had also gone up to 103. That was it. I was going to get myself fit. I went on a much stricter low-carb diet (than I had been for the last 6-years) the morning after surgery. Lost 30 lbs. Down to 146. Trying had to get to 142. That would be my lowest adult weight. But, stuck at 146 lbs. Help.

I used to ‘run’ 3.5 miles a day. Now I walk/run 7 miles a day and do 23-minutes on an exercise bike.

I Have DRASTICALLY Cut Back On Wearing Knee Support Compression Sleeves.

by Anura Guruge

Prior posts on this blog.

I had my major knee surgery to reattach a completely busted quad tendon on March 7, 2019, i.e., roughly 11-months ago.

As soon as I was permitted to walk without crutches — i.e., after 6-weeks — I started a rigorous exercise regime which sees me walking around 7-8 miles a day. To start with I wore a proper brace on my damaged knee. After about 3 months of that I discovered compression sleeves.

I got HOOKED on them. And that was the CLUE.

I got hooked on them.

I wore them on both knees. They were super comfortable, provided great support and made both knees feel great. Pain was never a factor. I lucked out! I was pain free within 2-weeks of surgery. Great surgery and I am strange.

But, this got me thinking.

No gain without pain.

If it is too good to be true.

I think about these things.

Did some research. Yes, I could have continued wearing them, all the time, as I had done.

But, they were REDUCING the muscle & tendon strength I was gaining from all my exercise. Oh! I do 23-minutes on a stationary bike, most days too.

So, I have cut back on using the sleeves. Cut back quite dramatically.

Most days I don’t use them at all, at all. No problem so far. No pain. Knees haven’t buckled.

I do wear them if I conditions underfoot are bad. Want my knees supported if I fall.

So, that is the new regime. Hope this helps.

Do some research. Basically, it boils down to: “too much of a good thing“.

I Now Wear FOUR Knee Braces (Plus Studded Shoes) When I Go Out In The Snow/Ice!

by Anura Guruge

IF you want to be ultra pedantic
2 of the braces are ‘compression sleeves’.

But, this is my new regime for snow/ice.

These go on first for muscle/tendon support.

Then, these on top of those.

The lockable brace, LOCKED at 0° on my left injured knee,
the other on my right, so far uninjured knee.

Studded shoes.
But, have to be careful. You can slip/slide on them.

Walking stick with crampon to top it all off!

Living in New Hampshire I can’t escape snow and ice. Though we now have a monster 3-stage snowblower, with tracs, I still need to be out in the snow/ice — and I still do some shovelling. PLUS, I have to get in my 6 — 7 miles of walking.

After my slip-and-fall 10-months ago when I busted my quad tendon, I am rather anxious not to damage my knees again. Hence the precautions.

Since my injury (even prior to surgery) I started wearing a knee brace.

I now wear knee braces, on both knees, ALL DAY. I don’t need to, but they help and I have, honestly, become addicted to them! As my surgeon has said, it will not do any har. Might even do some good.

But, I know that it is the sudden ‘twisting’/extension of the knee/leg tendon/muscles that lead to injury. Hence, the locked brace and the semi-locked one. Hoping that if I do fall, and that seems odds-on, they might help keep the knee straight. That is the theory.

Just sharing with you, just in case.

All the braces are from Amazon. The compression sleeves are cheap; i.e., under $7/each.

Shoveling Snow By Hand After A Nor’Easter — A Privilege!

by Anura Guruge

Attribution WILL be enforced.

My INNER MAN in the winter — I and my shovel.

The kids helped yesterday.

Cleared for the two generators — just in case. So happy that we didn’t need to use them, THIS TIME.

We have had a lot of snow.

Much of this PILE is snow that I have shoveled, by hand, this winter. When I look at it I can see how much shoveling I have done. As they said last Summer — FEEL THE BURN.

The snow even tries to climb trees.

I like to shovel snow, by hand!

That I am strange, goes without saying. But, this snow shoveling isn’t a total fobile. I try to get at least 50-minutes of solid exercise 6-days a week; 3-days on, one day off. My usual form of exercise is running, with 6 lbs of wrist-weights, for about 2.5 miles — in terrain with considerable elevation. So, I am no stranger to exercise …

I would, in the winter, rather shovel than run.

Like today, the day after the BIG Nor’Easter. Sun beating down, 26°F, cloudless cobalt blue skies and nobody around. It beats skiing! It is NOT as good as sex, but what is. But next to that, in terms of physical activity, I will take shoveling on a day like today.

Within 20 minutes I was so hot and sweating that I had to get rid of my jacket. Just to be on the safeside, given my advancing years, I put on another sweatshirt.

I lost 1.2 pounds in one hour of shoveling. Yes, much of that was liquid. But, wouldn’t YOU like to lose 1.2 pounds in a day?

I have been shoveling by hand for over 15 years. I plan to carry on till I drop. I could, as ever, be wrong, but I do NOT somehow see myself dropping dead while shoveling! Just don’t. It isn’t as if my ol’ hear doesn’t know what shoveling is all about.

Clearing the mailbox.

This was my main project today.

The mailboxes of my two neighbors,
and they both have snowblowers.

This motivates me.

My snow shoveling tutorial from 2014.

Basically it was ditto today — no jacket.

Enjoy. I wish ALL of you could share the pleasure and privilege of shoveling snow by hand.
