Facebook ‘Marketplace’ NEW ‘Shipping Option’ Works, Works Well — & Makes It Better Than eBay.

by Anura Guruge

In the past, with Facebook ‘Marketplace’ you either had to hope for local sales or rely on using PayPal (or equivalent) to obtain payment & then sort out your own shipping.

Not anymore. Facebook ‘Marketplace’ now has a NIFTY built-in ‘SHIPPING’ option with Facebook collecting the payment & supplying a shipping label.

I listed an item earlier this week. Facebook notified me of the new ‘shipping’ option & to entice me (totally) sadi that they will pay for the shipping. That was quite the enticement. They were ALSO NOT charging any fees or commission. WOW.

So, I would get, 100%, of the selling price of the item.

Facebook was paying for the shipping & there were no fees that were going to be deductible.

OF COURSE there was a catch. FB hold onto the payment for a week or so! Unlike eBay/PayPal you do NOT get paid when the buyer pays. Instead FB holds onto it. They don’t release it until the item is DELIVERED. Then, they still reserve 5-days to pay you. So, I still haven’t got paid. SMILE.

But, ….

I am impressed. It worked well. They, like eBay, provide built-in tracking.

They are setting themselves up to compete with eBay head-to-head. That is good. eBay had become complacent. This is good.

Try it out. I am sure you will like it. I did.

‘Samsung Watch 3’ Finally Available On Amazon — 48-Hours After It Was On ‘Best Buy’.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Google ‘shopping’ still wasn’t showing Amazon.

It was amusing & very obvious. ‘Samsung‘ gave ‘Best Buy‘ precedence — & no doubt ‘Best Buy’ would have had to pay for it dearly. But, they only appear to have got a 2-day head-start.

Amazon has just started listing it — offering more or less immediate shipping.

That is good. I refuse to buy items such as this from ‘Best Buy‘.

Amazon Kindle Paperback Option & Ordering Proof Copies.

The Amazon Kindle PAPERBACK program is NOT an oxymoron or an April Fool’s joke. It is now over a year old and I already published my last book, “Quick & Easy Meditation“, last September, in paperback and ebook form via Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). I had to jump through some hoops but I did manage to get it done.

Last September the KDP program did NOT offer the option of ordering PROOF copies. That was a bummer. But, I, a veteran self-publisher, CHEATED and got the proof copies I needed. I am NOT going to tell you hear how I did that! {Smile}

As of earlier this year KDP did start offering Proof copies — albeit in BETA test form, the whole paperback program a beta as well.

The KDP Paperback program is temperamental and has BUGS. You have been warned. More than likely it will object to your cover size even if you FOLLOWED their requirements!

Ordering Proofs is not straightforward either. You cannot do it right away. They send you a link via e-mail — and they tell you that it can take up to 4-hours to get the link. Then you have 24-hours to order the Proofs!

I got my e-mail in about 2 hours.

Your order through Amazon BUT it does NOT recognize PRIME! So, you have to pay for shipping.

Even though I ordered yesterday (i.e., June 30, 2018), I might not get the Proofs until July 10. That is crazy and unacceptable.

Anywho …. this is a heads up.

So, now the mystery is solved and the cat is out of the bag. My latest book is now at the galley proof stage.

Kind of funny, just in the last 2 weeks my wife and a friend both asked me whether I had stopped writing books! That was rather strange coming from folks who know me. If I am up and about, I am writing a book! That is how it goes. Yes, this book has taken me 9-months to write, but it is 475 pages in length and required extensive research. Just because I typically publish two books a year does NOT mean I have to always do so. {Smile}

So ….

More to come.

Publishing A Kindle Paperback! That Is Not An Oxymoron.

by Anura Guruge

A Kindle PAPERBACK sure sounds like an oxymoron or an April Fool’s joke.

Kindle has become so synonymous with eBooks that it seems absurd to mention paperback alongside Kindle. But, as of early 2017 it has been possible to publish a paperback using the Kindle system, i.e., Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). Now, as you can see from the 2nd figure, when you go to KDP to publish a title it asks you whether you want to publish a Kindle eBook, a paperback or both.

Earlier this week, as you can also see from that figure, I published my first Kindle paperback, viz. “Quick & Easy Meditation“. It was (the 2nd time around) fairly painless (and it was the 22nd book I have self-published).

What is incongruous, as I highlight in the 1st figure, is that Amazon currently offers TWO ways to publish a paperback, i.e., KDP and CreateSpace — both of which are fully-owned Amazon companies.

I had previously published 16 paperbacks (yes, 16) with CreateSpace — starting in 2008.

But, I, and others could see the writing on the wall when it came to CreateSpace. Amazon obviously wants KDP, which is tightly integrated into the Amazon ecosystem, to be the strategic arm for one to publish all books — eBook, paperbacks AND audio.

I have asked CreateSpace and they will NOT comment on Amazon’s intentions! They have told me, in writing, to ask KDP. That alone told me all I needed to know.

I have published over 20 Kindle eBooks too! So, I am not a stranger to either system.

KDP, as one would expect, works with the same printing dimensions and parameters as does CreateSpace. From what I can see, both KDP and CS use the same printing facilities in Middletown, Delaware.

On the 1st image I outline the main differences between the two — in terms of Pros and Cons.

Not being able to order author copies at cost is NOT a big concern for I. Why? Because I am Amazon Prime. So, I can have FREE 2-day shipping. CS charges for ALL shipping and their charges are NOT CHEAP and it can take a week or more. When I order direct from Amazon, as KDP expects you to do, I get royalties. IF I subtract the royalties and factor in the FREE ‘expedited’ shipping there isn’t much in the price difference — MAINLY because my books are CHEAP. And now the kicker. When I order from Amazon my rankings go up! Consequently, I have not ordered any author copies from CS for some time now. Getting printed proofs is also not an issue for I, since I know the ropes. I can get printed proofs at will! {Smile}

So, that is where we stand. As of now I do not see myself going back to CS. I will persevere with KDP.

Hope this helps.

Garmin Vivoactive 3 In ‘Slate’ (a.k.a. ‘Gun-Metal’) Will Be Available October 20, 2017.

by Anura Guruge

A good video.
Worth watching IF you are considering a Garmin Vivoactive 3.

The stainless-steel nor the white appeals. As some of you know, I, having worn a diamond-studded Rolex for 30-years, am fond of nice looking watches. Wearing the Vivoactive HR has been rather ‘different’ at times.

That was ANOTHER motivating factor to consider upgrading to the Vivoactive 3. With a leather or metal mesh strap it could look halfway dressy WHEN I am dressed up.

So, I want the slate model.

Got it from an insider at Garmin itself today. Shipments of the slate model are slated for October 20, 2017. I had heard that on the rumor mill too.

The white model is already available at Best Buy — BUT not at Amazon.

I might have to buy the slate model directly from Garmin.

What I am going to do with the Vivoactive HR is SOLVED. Devanee is going to take it!

Garmin Vivoactive 3 Owner’s Manual Now Available.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to download Owner’s Manual, as a PDF, from the Garmin site.

Garmin has yet to announce the availability date for the new Vivoactive 3. The expectation is that it will be in mid-October, i.e., a few weeks from now.

I plan to pre-order it from Amazon. Nothing to lose. Amazon will NOT charge me (or you) till it is shipped. Just means that I (or you) will get it more or less as soon as it starts shipping.

In the meantime the Owner’s Manual is available — as a PDF.

I have downloaded it, already. {Smile}

So can you.

Buying ‘Weatherables’ Deck Railing From Home Depot — The Way To Go.

Home Depot & Weatherables work together — cooperatively.

Quote for Weatherables generated by Home Depot.

The Weatherable Railing I installed.

Buying 40′ of Weatherable 36″ high Birmingham/Vilano deck railing from Home Depot rather than directly from Weatherables was 12% cheaper ($166) — and I did NOT have to pay $225 shipping costs (since HD does not charge any shipping as long as you pick it up at one of their stores).

And here is where it gets even BETTER. Weatherables did NOT have a problem with me placing the order through Home Depot rather than through them. They actually e-mailed their quote to Home Depot — DIRECTLY — so that HD could generate a new quote for me! That was pretty neat. The salesman, who was very helpful, even told me that he was ‘very cool’ with it because he gets a bigger commission for orders placed through HD. That seems strange but as an ex-salesman (earning commission) I was happy for him.

So it was WIN-WIN all around. Everybody was happy.

What I found, at least in the Concord (NH) and Rochester (NH) Home Depot stores, was that you really can’t find any HD employees who can really help you, with absolute confidence, when it comes to ordering the Weatherables stuff. They try but it is soon clear that they are as much at sea as I was. They suggest that you try and order online.

That is when I called up Weatherables and asked them to put together a quote. They were happy to do so and did it on the phone. The salesman I got knew his stuff and explained everything to me. The ONLY thing he REFUSED to touch — for obvious liability issues — was what length lag screws I should use to secure the metal posts onto my deck in the 3 places where I could not drill through to attach a bottom plate because there was a tall deck leg/post underneath. That was funny. He just refused to answer that. (I ended up using 3″ & 3.5″ lag screws, two on each post.)

Once the Weatherables salesman e-mailed his quote to Home Depot — to the Rochester store (and they had the e-mail) — I heard from a HD rep. within 24-hours. It was very quick and very smooth. HD called me, twice, to keep me appraised as to when the shipment would arrive. It was pretty quick. Within days. I was happy.

Another good deal with Home Depot.

Get A Refund When Amazon Fails To Deliver On Its Prime Two-Day Shipping Promise.

by Anura Guruge

primeshipping

Let’s just say that I have received $37 back from Amazon, in the last 12 days, for it missing three (3) shipment dates.

I keep assiduous track of all my Amazon shipments and track the packages. IF the package is not delivered, per the promised day — typically because of a USPS screw-up — I call up Amazon at 8:15pm, on the day, and ask for a refund. And they always oblige.

So, stay on top of this. It can be a nice little added discount. {SMILE}.

Canon Mirrorless EOS M5 Availability Date Set.

by Anura Guruge

m5avail

November 30, 2016, is stated as the shipping date both in Japan & the U.S. — by Amazon.

Not clear whether that means, if you are Amazon Prime and have pre-ordered, it will get to you on Wednesday, November 30 or whether that is the day that Amazon will ship it out for it to get to you, with luck, December 2.

One intriguing question is whether anybody, let’s say ‘Best Buy‘, will get tempted to offer a M5 deal on ‘Black Friday‘ or ‘Cyber Monday‘. I am going to wait, though I will order via Discover with their 90-day price match.
