I Got A Garmin Vivoactive HR Activity/Fitness Tracker.

by Anura Guruge

So, I got a Garmin Vivoactive HR from Best Buy on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. I chose this model for the Heart Rate Monitor and GPS — though I have yet to work out how to use the GPS. I bought in from Best Buy, rather than Amazon, because I used a bunch of Reward Points which meant that I didn’t have to pay much for this tracker. But NOT buying anything from Best Buy again — especially since I used up all my Reward Points.

On May 25, 2017, I had got Deanna a FitBit Alta HR.

I did NOT get a FitBit because I have never had much luck with FitBits — whether with their devices or their STOCK! I had reluctantly bought some FIT shares, right after the IPO, because a then 14-year old shamed me into doing so, he being extremely gung-ho.

I am not new to fitness trackers. The first FitBit I bought was at Christmas 2011.

But after I threw my original FitBit away I had lost interest and was not following the technology.

Then in mid-May we had Shane Selling my exceptional computer guy and Drone whizard. Of late Shane has become a fitness fanatic and is extremely fit. He was wearing a FitBit Alta HR. First time I had been up close to a FitBit in 5 years. I was vaguely impressed. Deanna more so.

Shane, the nice guy he is, took his FitBit off his wrist and put it on mine.

I was IMMEDIATELY shocked by how high my heart rate was! I nearly had a heart attack. It was in the 80s. It should not have been.

That is when I decided that I need to get an activity tracker with heart rate monitoring.

I got Deanna a FitBit Alta HR the next day BUT spent 2 weeks researching the technology. Hence the Garmin for I.

I need to get back into shape and LOSE SOME WEIGHT! I am borderline obese and not happy about that. Oh YES, I have been MUCH HEAVIER but I am not proud of that.

It is helping. A LONG WAY TO GO.

Ironically, because of my ‘Day-Off Schedule’, some school appointments and rain I have NOT gone for a run since I got the Garmin. That will get rectified tomorrow.

I will keep you posted.

I Get A ‘Drobo S’ 5-Bay RAID-Storage With 6TB Of WD Disks For My Photos.

by Anura Guruge

Click for the Amazon listing for a Drobo S. My computer guy sold me one of his previously used units for $200.

We all knew that at some point my incessant photo taking was going to take a toll on storage.

Since September 2016 I have taken nearly 19,000 pictures.

That comes to around 2,700 pictures a month — 90 pictures a day.

I was storing my pictures on my 600GB ‘D’-drive. The main issue was backing them up. I tried Amazon Photo. That was a sad joke.

Kind of realized that online, i.e., cloud-based, storage was too slow and messy.

That was when my OUTSTANDING computer guy, Shane Selling — also of drone fame — suggested I get a local RAID unit. After some research and consideration I realized that this would work and work well for my needs.

As it happened Shane, having graduated to a NAS-attached ‘Drobo 5N’, had a ‘Drobo S’ that he was no longer using which he was willing to give me for $200 — which was quite the steal. Thank YOU, Shane. He even delivered and installed it. He is very good. Outstanding.

He and I had first talked about getting two 2TB WD Black drives that would have given me 2TB of RAID.

At the last minute I ended up ordering two 3TB GREEN WDs for 3TB of RAID — the GREEN drives more energy efficient, but slower. The speed was not an issue since I don’t access the photos that often.

It has worked out. I have had the Drobo S working for about 2 weeks. So far, so good.

Very handy for I. Don’t have to worry about having to backup my files. Just store them on the Drobo.

I think the 3TB will meet my need for at least 3 years. Maybe more. In my life, 3-years is a lifetime. So I am happy with that.

Given that I have 3 unused bays, and the Drobo is genuinely plug-and-play I can easily up the capacity without any disruption.

I am real GLAD that Shane steered me to the Drobo. Just the ticket.

Hope this helps.

Replacing Intel i7-920 CPU Stock Fan With A Zalman CNPS9500A Cooler Fan.

by Anura Guruge

The old Intel i7 stock/kit fan.

My workhorse computer, which I used for all my daily work, is over 7 years old!

I had it built to run Windows 7 and it was built on the day that Windows 7 was made generally available, viz. October 22, 2009. I had pre-ordered Windows 7 Professional from Microsoft and received a DVD the day prior to the G.A.

I hate to jinx it but this PC has done well by me. In addition to the 10,000 or more posts I have done with it, I have written (and published) 20 books on it. Yes, 20 books.

It was a top-end PC when I had it built, i.e., Intel i7-920 (4-core), 12GB of memory etc., and it is plenty fast enough for what I do.

So I am not motivated at all to upgrade.

But, over the last few years it has required work. The power-supply blew, quite spectacularly, about 4-years ago. I put in a new EVGA GeForce GT 740 4GB graphics card last year. I now clone and replace the ‘C’-drive twice a year.

Though it has 7 fans, yes, 7 — heating has always been a concern. But, until 2 weeks I never had a real heating issue.

But, one morning the CPU heat hit max. and the PC shutdown! That was scary. It started to run hot. My computer guy, who I trust, Shane Selling, recommended that I ditch the stock cooling fan that came with the Intel i7 and get an upmarket one. For $45 for the cooler it was crazy to refuse.

So, on Wednesday, Shane installed this bronze work-of-art on my PC. Wow. Quite the cooler.

It has made a HUGE difference. The PC is running at 1/2 the temperature! Wow.

Just wanted to share this with you. I will keep you posted.

‘WordPress Theme Detector’ — Real Cool When It Can Find The WP Theme.

by Anura Guruge

My friend Shane Selling, the drone master and PC whiz was here last night to clone and replace my c-drive — something I now do about every 18 months (both for resilience, potential added reliability and backup). As always we talked and looked at a bunch of stuff ranging from cars to e-mail servers. In the process he showed me this tool. Cool. Check it out. Alas it does not work on ALL WordPress sites — including most of mine!

He sent me this link, a couple of days ago, along with the stills he took
at the 2014 Laconia Airport Open Day.

Loved the video. Flying through this ‘dog run’ and then through some goal posts is way cool.

Park in Laconia. Not sure which one. He lives on Opechee so this could be that. Will have to ask him’

Enjoy.

P.S., Shane, of course, being the IT guru that he is,
has his own YouTube ‘channel’. This video
is on that channel. So you are already there.
