‘Deadwater Fell’, Set In Scotland, On ‘Acorn’ TV, Is Quite The Yarn, Will Have You Hooked.

by Anura Guruge

It was good. Very good. First 20-minutes were confusing — & you later realize that it was intentional, cleverly intentional.

Tight. Well woven. Very clever. Some might say it was trite. I found it entertaining & definitely watchable.

Well, just letting you know. Might not be everybody’s cup of tea. But, it sure was mine. Towards the end I had to know how it ended. That doesn’t often happen.

“Scottish Mussel” (2015) Movie On “Amazon”: Cute Enough Story, BUT Kicker Is Learning About Scottish Pearls!

Despite my Scottish heritage and all the time I have spent in Scotland I had never heard of Scottish pearls! I know that for a fact, because it isn’t something I would have forgotten.

This movie, ‘Scottish Mussel‘ appeared in my Amazon Prime Video recommendation list. It looked vaguely promising. So, the other night when we decided we should try a comedy to get a break from murder-mysteries we gave it a spin.

And then we learnt about Scottish pearls and, boy, am I glad. I felt that there was a gaping hole in my knowledge.

Movie is not something to write home about. Some magnificent shots of the eternal beauty of bonny Scotland and there are some funny bits. But, we watched it to the end because the Scottish pearl angle was so intriguing.

So, don’t watch it as a comedy. Instead treat it as an amusing documentary of Scottish pearls.

“Whisky Galore” Movie (2016) On Starz — Classic British Comedy, Reminiscent Of “Waking Ned Devine”.

“Waking Ned Devine” Trailer (on YouTube).

Very funny. Very watchable. Classic British comedy with touches of the 1960s — 1970s “Dad’s Army” — but definitely more reminiscent of 1998 “Waking Ned Devine” (though alas without any nudity involving the backsides of scrawny old men).

It was on Starz (which we got free from DISH for 3 months) and I recorded it. Glad I did. We enjoyed it. Yes, a bit corny and a tad predictable — but it is said to be based on a true story. So, I guess they had to stay somewhat close to the actual events, even at the risk of it been not-as-dramatic if it was purely fictional. Great cast of characters. Try and watch it. I am sure you will enjoy it.

“Tommy’s Honour” Movie (2016) On Amazon Prime — More Than Just Golf; Engaging Human Drama.

by Anura Guruge

YouTube trailer.

Watched it because it came up on our Amazon Prime Video list.

I was a tad worried that it would be very golf-centric — and golf has no appeal to I. I find it exceedingly boring and pointless. But, we were pleasantly surprised. The golf is in tasteful moderation and easy enough to watch. The rest is a rather engaging human drama about families: fathers, sons, lovers and wives. Very well put together. Makes you want to know what happens. Has you rooting for some. Plus it is shot in luscious Scotland. Not bad at all. I would recommend it.

If you like golf, that would be a huge bonus. Lot of history about the game and even how golf bags were invented. Wow.

9:30am (Eastern) Was THE Time To ‘Buy’ Post Brexit ‘Leave’ Vote. SMILE.

by Anura Guruge

crmpostbrexit

Chart for “Salesforce.com” (CRM), on June 24, 2016 — day after Brexit. From “marketwatch.com” of course — who else? Click to ENLARGE and marvel.

I stayed up till 1:30am (Eastern) watching the Referendum results, LIVE, on BBC 1 on my Roku, “UK TV” channel. [To my disappointment BBC election coverage came across as primitive compared to what we have got used to in the U.S.!]

I was surprised by the result and I really do have genuine, mixed feelings. I am not wildly euphoric that we voted, in a non-binding referendum, to LEAVE — though, deep, deep down, my sentiments are with LEAVE, which is how I voted, 41 years ago in the 1st Referendum.

I don’t believe that this is a done deal and a lot of water will flow under the collectives bridges of the EU before we see anything definitive 2.5 years, minimum, from now.

That the markets reacted the way they did was hilarious to I. It is crazy. Why sell stock today? What has changed?

But I was glad. I had been waiting, biding my time, for a pullback of this magnitude. SMILE. That is what clever investing is all about.

Was on Fidelity at 9:30am. I had NOT factored in that Fidelity would be slow! I should have remembered from past days like this. But it wasn’t too bad.

I wanted to buy more “salesforce.com” (CRM) and “Facebook” (FB) shares — some for the kids. Got it done. I was all done by 9:35am.

Why would AMZN go down $20 in the day? How will Brexit impact AMZN? I don’t think it will. Strangely AMZN options, my bread-and-butter, were not cooperating. Shame. But that is OK. I am not greedy, never was.

More on my feelings on Brexit in another post.

But for now, SMILE. SMILE. SMILE.

P.S., If Scotland AGAIN tries to break away I will be beyond bummed.

Click image to watch quite an amazing, virtuoso musical performance.

Paddy Kelly with Devanee at Loon.

He is friends with accordion-playing Scottish legend John Carmichael and as such I am going to call him John Carmichael’s protégée, though I am not sure whether that is actually the case. But I am sure John, one of the nicest guys ever, and ever so proud (quite rightly) of all things Scottish, will mind.

Brandon is also friend with our ‘The Brigadoons‘ friend, music maestro, Paddy Kelly. So Brandon, given his talents, his moving in the right circles.

Sunday, September 20, 2015, 11:45 am performance at the Governor’s Lodge.

John Carmichael, from Giffnock, Glasgow (Scotland), by any measure is indeed the ‘Real McCoy’. He is the epitome of a Scot — a traditional one at that. His authentic Scottish tunes and songs, not to mention his delightful stories, transports you back, magically, to the Banks of Lock Lomond in Scotland. With John you can feel the mist rising from the Loch. It is John Carmichael and ‘The Brigadoons‘ that make sure that the NH Scottish Highland Games lives up to its name.

I have always relished listening to and watching John. He has so much talent and personality. A really, really nice guy too (but, in my experience, that is true with most people from Glasgow). Such a delight and what an entertainer. Devanee and I sat and savored his entire set on Sunday morning and we are so glad we did so. He is magic.

I am so glad that I managed to get these pictures so that YOU can get a feel of this exceptional gentleman. Enjoy.
