“Smarter Balanced” assessment (or testing) is aligned to Common Core. It is basically one of the testing components of Common Core. Click image to access the “Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium” to learn more.

Don’t let the “Smarter Balanced” terminology confuse you. This is still about Common Core.

As I noted in this post, two weeks ago, the vote by the Alton Central School (ACS) School Board not to ‘support’ the use of ‘Common Core’ was taken at the September 16, 2013 meeting. So it would have been a year next week.

You would think that they have had plenty of time to come up with a strategy if not a plan.

Wasn’t this covered in the Strategic Plan? I don’t know. I haven’t looked recently.

From same article as above. Use that link to access original.

There are some statements in this article that are beyond the pale. It says that one of the Board Members was ‘NOT CONVINCED’ by the discussion and ‘the discussion’ appears to have hinged on ACS Superintendent, William (‘Bill’) Lander claiming that the State mandates that the test must be conducted. How many shades of gray can you have in that? Shouldn’t the Board have got better clarification of this BY NOW? They have had a year. Does the Board trust the Superintendent on these matters or do they not? Why are they openly questioning his claims? Shouldn’t he have, and I know he is super busy, put together a paper on this that the Board could have studied? He has had 11 months. As far as I know you can produce a baby in 9, so couldn’t these folks have got something sorted out in 11?

Further on it talks about the Chair ‘accusing’ a member of using a ‘crib sheet’ and that the two “went back and forth about this”! What is this. 4th Grade? Amazing.

Appears that this year’s Alton Central Middle School soccer team is irrepressibly ebullient to the extent of putting the ‘Energizer Bunny‘ to shame. Good for them. Bravo. What a joy.

These kids are so full of pep that even after a game, on the way back on the bus, they are practicing their skills and exercising. They seem to have developed an exercise regime, ideally suited for the inside of school buses, called “dodge the cleats”. That is pretty descriptive. I have to applaud the coaches for encouraging such initiative.

Such a shame that a boot should fly out of the bus window and smash the windscreen of the car behind. Kids will be kids. And they called the police! What next?

They were just playing “dodge the cleats”.

Of course this was just a sporting accident. So I hope it is left at that.

Right?

88246127001_2069184013001_961896998-193-1357162962288School has started and there are after school programs — in particular the sports programs.

But, ACS in its infinite wisdom has decided that the late buses will NOT start till mid-September!

Is this a JOKE?

This is grossly irresponsible at multiple levels, key among them being the blatant disregard for conserving resources, reducing pollution and helping Alton parents with their budgets. All Alton parents, alas, are not rich like the handsomely compensated School Administration. We have buses to reduce the amount of cars that have to go to and fro to pick up (and drop off) kids at school.

This is inexcusable. I am going to take this to as many places as I can and my angel will be, quite rightly, that of resource conservation.

IF ACS claims that this is a COST ISSUE I will laugh in their face. They didn’t budget for this? Why not?

If ACS can now afford all these lawyers they can’t afford to provide late buses?

The biggest problem we have is that most in Alton just don’t seem to care.

IF we had local elected officials that cared about such matters, at a minimum, the Selectmen would intervene.

They claim to teach the kids about recycling, energy conservation etc. and then they do this? What a joke.

This is bad. This is sad. This is Alton.

It was September 16, 2013, when the ACS School Board voted 3-to-2 not to ‘support’ use of ‘Common Core‘ at Alton Central School. Starting immediately after this landmark vote there was confusion as to what the vote was supposed to mean. Within 3 weeks the ever pugnacious ACS Superintendent, William ‘Bill’ Lander, was telling the ‘Laconia Daily Sun’ that the Board’s ‘rejection’ of Common Core has no immediate consequences — and let us now dwell on that word ‘immediate’. Of course we all understood that they wouldn’t and couldn’t change the plans for the 2013 – 2014 school year that was already underway.

But now we have started, as of yesterday, the 2014 – 2015 ACS School Year and Common Core is everywhere. I went to the ‘Open House’ last Thursday, and as ever it was good, positive and fun and it was a great pity that the new Acting Principal, William ‘Bill’ Lander, always busy with his heavy teaching schedule at Plymouth State (PSU) and his extensive repertoire of publications, was not there for usor at least we didn’t see him though we toured the whole school, end-to-end, and saw nearly everybody else. But we understand that he was there but I am puzzled as to why we didn’t see him because we were there from 5:30 till past 7pm. The new Associate Principal, Linda Willman shone — she was quite literally glowing. She is good news. She will do well. We are so happy that she, ignoring the meaningless titles, is heading up ACS. Good things will happen with her in charge.

I saw tons of ‘Singapore Math‘ books in various classrooms. I checked with a couple of teachers. Common Core is ALL GO.

So what gives?

Is the Board just going to forget that they had that vote?

Or is it that the Administration is going to ignore the board.

There is a bigger picture here, with these three incidents serving as landmarks:

Sept. 2013: Board votes against ‘Common Core’ administration continues with ‘Common Core’.

June 2014: Board overturns three bullying decisions made by the supposedly trained ACS Administration.

August 2014: The ACS Administration gets Diane M. Gorrow of the law firm Soule, Leslie, Kidder et. al. to write a letter to Jay C. Boynton, the ACS School Board’s attorney asking for a bullying hearing to be dismissed! When the letter appeared in my inbox it took me a second to work out the implications. The Superintendent is using a lawyer to communicate with the Board about a bullying hearing! As far as I knew the Administration ‘worked’ for the Board. Seems incongruous, if not downright wrong, to me — but what do I know. I just try to document this stuff BECAUSE nobody else does. I did not even realize that ACS now has, and it must mean, HIRES, two law firms: one by the Administration and the other by the Board. Who is paying for these lawyers — unless, of course, they are doing this pro bono because they like Alton and are committed to the cause of Public Education.

So, that is the state of play.

Alton, N.H. in 2013 – 2014
is again 23rd lowest …

We got a letter today with our new, HIGHER assessment. C’est la vie.

Given that we have a rather modest house — and as I said in a recent post I have seen local photographers with cameras worth more than our house — our assessment isn’t that bad.

Just a heads up.

The new 2014 – 2015 rates will come out towards the end of November 2014. They will GO UP. Of that there is no doubt or need for debate.

Enjoy.

ethics

To me the issue always has been and always will be one of DISCLOSURE.

If they disclose I have no problem.

But the problem is that they, pathetic as they innately are, refuse to disclose breaching every ethical standard in the book. But then again, I am not sure of any book on ethics that will suggest that it is clever for an editor to brag, in print, as he did on November 29, 2012, that he was speeding along at 90 mph because he was in a hurry.

Not sure whether other than me cares. So this could be a non-issue.

Alton seems to be at peace. All strife but bad memories from the past. So ‘conflict of interest’ might not matter.

3D Holographic projections (showcased by CNN during the November 2008 elections) is now all the rage in high-tech, ‘money-no-object’ India. Politicians love it; who wouldn’t when you can be in four places at the same time (like Indian gods of yore).

Given Microsoft’s (and Bill Gates’) enormous vested interest in promoting “Common Core” (and recouping their investment in the biometric bracelets) it makes sense that Nadella, trying for an early dramatic hit, would go for something like this. The technology is easy enough. There is, however, as is to be expected, a hefty hardware investment required. But, Microsoft plans to get around this via an attractive, hard-to-refuse leasing program. All schools in the U.S., provided that they are board approved to teach “Common Core”, will be eligible for the Microsoft “Common Core” virtual-teachers. Though I am not sure how many schools will permit this the kids will actually have the option of choosing who they want to be their teacher, for any given module, from a library of best-of-breed teachers from around the World. But, you can also customize, à la high-end GPS, the language, voice, accent and tone in which the module is to be delivered. So, if it will amuse the kids and keep them engaged, you could have a virtual Japanese teacher go through a module in English conjugation in a funny Indian accent. There is no end to the possibilities. The holographic virtual teachers will be able, in the U.S., in August 2014 for the 2014 – 2015 school year. Installation and setup of the cloud servers, quintuple-band streaming Wi-Fi projectors and the huge software libraries will take at least a month. So schools will have to get on board soon. Cameras will be used, with centralized monitoring stations, to make sure that the kids are paying attention since the holographic teachers can be utilized with a teacher or even a substitute having to be in the classroom.

So the e-mail I got 10 days ago about Sydney trying to try her luck at Gilford was indeed on the money. I didn’t have any doubts. The Alton mother who sent me the e-mail has formidable connections across the world! She is beyond awesome. If she tells me that black is white, I would trust her — because she has impeccable contacts. So we did get it right. 100% right. Said “3 finalists”. Bingo. 3 finalists. What more do you want?

I am kind of crushed on multiple fronts. Though I had had a number of e-mails asking me whether I had been able to find anything more on this, I had been remiss on checking around. It has been busy around here. I am still buried, but that I managed to get my taxes filed, two days ago, has given me a brief respite. Today, my day off from slogging it up Prospect Mountain Road, which gives me an extra hour of work, was the first time I had ‘5 minutes’ to look around. I am crushed that I missed YESTERDAY’S ‘meet the candidates‘ meeting in Gilford. I would have gone to cheer on Sydney. Ooops! Did I say the wrong thing? No. No. I don’t want Sydney to leave Alton. So, I would have gone to tell the Gilford folks to keep their grubby paws off OUR esteemed principal.

I am crushed … but I am also relieved … but then again concerned!

OK. So now I know who she is up against. Kara Lamontagne! The Assistant. Did Sydney realize … work out … that Lamontagne would apply? Aahhh! LAMONTAGNE. I know the Laconia/Gilford Lamontagne clan — and I will not go into details. Talk about connected, influential and liked. Wow. Lamontagne. [[Why can’t I stop grinning?]]

I, as ever, could be wrong BUT I have a feeling that a Lamontagne in Gilford is hard to beat even for somebody as exceptional and outworldly like our own Leggett.

Now what?

IF there is any justice in this world, Leggett should get it. She has to be the best qualified on the lot, BUT she is a ‘Leggett’ and not a “Lamontagne” — and not a Lamontagne that has worked at that school.

So, I am now worried for Leggett.

I don’t pray. IF I did, this would be a time that I would start praying. But, for those that do, PLEASE pray for our Leggett.

But, as ever, I am so confused (which goes with the territory of being a partial moron) and befuddled.

I don’t want her to go. I will miss her terribly.

But then again.

IF she doesn’t get this job what happens? OF COURSE she continues at Alton, making sure that ACS stays committed to Common Core. But, I, maybe unnecessarily, worry that the teachers might be a bit perturbed that she applied for this job. But lets be fair. She is a Gilford taxpayer. Makes sense for her to work in Gilford.

I don’t know. I am crushed. I feel betrayed — but that is immaterial.

So what do I … or what should I hope for?

That she gets the job and leaves me … or that she doesn’t get the job and continues at Alton all disappointed that she didn’t get the job?

Life is so complicated.
