Garmin Offers Cellular Connectivity, For The 1st Time, With Vivoactive 3M Verizon.

This is BIG. Garmin ticks off another box on the ‘smartwatch‘ checklist — cellular connectivity. For now it is limited to Verizon and the Vivoactive 3M. But, we know it will soon be extended to include the Fenix 5 Plus and the Forerunner 645M and more cellular carriers.

Some of you are going to LOVE this especially if you have Verizon.

The two-way texting could be neat though not sure how practical it will be.

Those safety features could prove to be the main catch. I go running in some remote places without a phone and it would be nice to know that, if needed, I could get help using my watch.

But, from what I see, the initial push is for music download and I am skeptical about that. But, maybe Garmin got enough requests.

It is kind of pre-announced at CES 2019. Not going to be available for 8-weeks (i.e., two more months) and it is interesting that Garmin is not quoting a price on its Website. I checked around. Pricing has not been determined as yet.

I will, of course, keep you posted. Stay tuned (and you don’t need Verizon LTE for that).

I really, really, for the sake of the kids in and around Manchester, hope I am WRONG. But, I get the distinct feeling that there will again be NO elephant parade in Manchester, N.H., when the circus arrives in town.

I know that people are already doing Web searches on the parade — as it applies to Manchester. Many of them come ‘here’ because I have written about it so often.

I think 2012, when they did their best to keep us from finding out the exact time, was the last time.

First they started taking out the elephants, from-and-to, to the railway yard at ‘odd’ times — like getting the elephants to the train while second-half of the last show, Sunday evening, was still going on.

Then last year they trucked them to/fro — and again did the trucking while the last show was ongoing.

They are just TOO worried about animal rights protestors — and a possible commotion on the road which could go terribly wrong. I do understand — and actually see both sides of the debate.

I just feel bad for the kids. It was a wonderful, rewarding FREE show — especially for the kids who don’t get to go the circus (though they are offering $10 seats this Thursday).

I will try and stay on top of this and IF folks who work in Manchester, especially the high-rise buildings, could e-mail me, as you so kindly did in 2012, and let me know when the train pulls in.

But for now I dread the worst, i.e., no parade. The elephants getting transported by truck.

Lets keep our fingers crossed — for the kids.

I don’t have the time to go into this in detail BUT I have been a train buff all my life — more so at times than others.
I have even driven actual passenger trains pulled by Canadian diesel engines!
That I have a fairly large collection of train books will attest to this interest because I only collect books on fields that I follow …

A train being PUSHED from the back, especially when negotiating a sharp bend,
is NEVER as stable, and as such safe,
as a train being PULLED from the front.

Push-Pull commuter trains is a peculiar, COST CUTTING U.S. operational mode.

When I first saw it in the U.S. I was horrified. Aghast!

It is basic intuitive physics. Try it.

Why do we invariably PULL heavy things. The stability.

This train that derailed would have had a BETTER CHANCE of staying upright if it was being pulled.

Why do they do it. COST SAVINGS.

Commuter trains. Go from A to B and back to A again.

Ideally you have a double track system with switching so that the engine can be moved from front-to-back so to speak so that on the way back it is also still pulling.

Or, as they do in other countries you use TWO power units (locomotives) — one at the front, one at the back. Then you always have one unit PULLING the train.

In the U.S., with the mania for cost savings, they don’t do either.

They PULL the train one way and they PUSH it the way back.

Then you get derailments like this.

Mark my words. I do know about this stuff.

NTSB, aware of the economic impact, will FUDGE their report.
They know that they can’t ban this type of operation.
A few deaths, every few years, is worth it per their calculations.

Anura Guruge safety glass

Here is me requesting ‘Chapter & Verse’ on safety glass at Alton Central School (ACS). Check the video from the 1:23:00 mark. Thanks.

As I have already stated I was beyond gob-smacked when we saw the glass in the Middle School Library door shatter and go everywhere.

IF a child had been in the way of that glass I would hate to think what could have happened.

Here is me standing up, as an ACS parent and Alton taxpayer, asking the Board to find out where ACS stands on safety glass.

Yes, the next day, I made quite a number of calls to every single local and state agency I could think of.

Existing, i.e., grandfathered, LACK of safety glass seems to have fallen between the cracks.

Of course the School can — and obviously should — replace all OLD glass with SAFETY GLASS — if they care about safety.

So, here you have it. Yes, again, one of the Alton Guruges on record, on tape, asking the School Board for action.

I asked for this report for the NEXT School Board meeting. That is TODAY.

Lets see what they do.

But, at least we know that we have done what little we can.

Getting YOUR Facts Right About The Sending Of E-Mails — Especially When It Comes To ME.

I can’t remember the last time I lied or the last time anybody could prove that I got my facts very wrong. I try to get my facts right and with a paper trail stretching back 35 years covering 350+ printed publications and 21+ printed books, not to mention quite a few interviews, it is easy to verify that claim.

So, IF I stand up and say I did not get an e-mail, it would behoove many to believe me at my word. IF I was going to lie or make a false statement it would not be over something as trivial as the reception of an e-mail.

IF you SCREWED up and didn’t send me the e-mail
and then thought you did
…. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Notice my e-mail or even name does NOT APPEAR on that e-mail.

It was sent to Deanna. When Deanna FORWARDED my original e-mail, because there was a prior claim that my original had not been received, she CC’ed me. We decided to sent it from her incase my e-mail had been blocked — which might explain the claim that my original was not received.

The person who responded didn’t KNOW or forgot to hit REPLY ALL.

Bottom line: I never got the e-mail
because it was never sent to me.

So …

As ever, I was 100% right in the statement I made.

Deanna never forwarded the e-mail or told me about it. She is under no obligation. She assumed that I got my own.

She has her own e-mail I have mine. Unlike some other couples we don’t pour over each other’s e-mails.

Between us we probably get upwards of 60 e-mails a day. We don’t cross-check and say did you get this or did you get that.

So this is FUNNY, if not for the fact that it is NOT FUNNY.

Stay tuned.

All of us happened to be at Alton Central tonight for the October School Board meeting, in the Middle School Library, when the glass on the door broke.

Ols, single pane, non-safety glass like on the door at ACS.

Old, single pane, non-safety glass like on the door at ACS.

There were shards of glass all over the place and shards left on the door.

If this had happened when a small kid was opening or closing that door the outcome could have been DISASTROUS.

Of course, I immediately asked, when I was allowed to speak, as to why it was NOT safety glass.

This is serious.

The Department of Labor inspected the school in Spring. They found some violations BUT they obviously did not check the glass. This is not good.

What we don’t know is how many other doors and windows at ACS as old, single-pane, NON-SAFETY glass.

At 11 pm tonight, given that I work at night, I called up Mr. John Dever III, Alton Town’s Building Inspector and told him about the situation. I urged him to get to ACS ASAP and check all the glass.

I believe the school should be CLOSED until all the old, non-safe glass is replaced.

Well you have been told.

Chalk it up as yet another sign of the time, a sad consequence of the age we live in.

I guess elephant parades when the circus is in town is now history too. Such a shame. It was so much fun and great, free entertainment for kids.

You can’t, however, blame the circus. It was just getting too risky with all these animal rights protestors and crazy folks taking pot shots at elephants.

Last year, as those that follow this blog remember, they did everything possible to make sure that the public would not know when the elephants would be walked to/from the train.

This year they went further. They trucked the elephants from the back of the arena to the train.

We saw it and watched three of the elephants being loaded into the truck — a larger, 18 wheel version of a horse transport.

Very sad, but at least the elephants are safe.

What is happening to today’s society distresses me. We continue to regress.

No elephant parades anymore.

How sad.

The Circus Is Coming To Manchester, NH, This Week. But, The 2013 ‘Elephant Parade’ Or Lack Thereof.

I doubt very much whether there will be an ‘official’ elephant parade in Manchester, NH this year;
i.e., October 2013.

Yes, of course, THE CIRCUS, i.e., Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey, will indeed be performing
at the Verizon Arena in Manchester, Thursday, October 3 to Sunday, October 6, 2013.

Yes, we have tickets, and as we have for the last five or six years, we will be there.

Those of you who followed my the ‘Elephant Parade‘ posts will know the lengths
that the circus, the arena and the Manchester PD went to
to ensure that the timings of the two ‘parades’ were kept in the dark.

I, however, now understand.

They are understandably WORRIED that some idiot will create an incident
that escalates beyond a joke.

Even a single elephant spooked, in public, can be ugly.

Plus, of course, we don’t want any harm coming the way of the elephants.
Check this disturbing post related to a circus elephant.

So, to keep the timing for the ‘parades’ secret makes sense.

All that said ten(+) plus Indian elephants are hard to hide in Manchester.

The circus train will arrive in Manchester on Tuesday — latest Wednesday. I think train parking is cheaper in NH, as it should be, that in other states.

Once the train gets here they will move the elephants, within a few hours, from the train to the Arena. They don’t do this using vans or F-150 trucks. The elephants and the horses walk from the train to the Arena. This was the much loved, much anticipated ‘parade’. It still has to happen. The difference is that they won’t admit to when it will occur beforehand. Me making all those phone calls last year was a mistake. They must have thought I was some crank trying to cause mischief. No wonder they gave me the runaround.

As some of YOU so kindly did last year, you can help out. If you work in Manchester and can see the train pull in … please let me know. Ditto when they start unloading the elephants. At least that way SOME kids in Manchester might get to see the elephants. As for the trouble makers. They probably are camped by the railway siding waiting for the train. It is a crying shame. The parade was so much fun for the kids.

If, last year’s routine is followed, they will take the elephants back to the train during the 2nd half of Sunday’s last show. So, if they follow that same routine, the elephants will be leaving the arena between 5:15 pm to 6:30 pm.

So, again. I do NOT want to see ANY trouble with the elephants. That would be BEYOND STUPID. Elephants are wonderful creatures. If you think the circus is harming the elephants have a dialog with the circus. DON’T HARM THE ELEPHANTS and whatever you do, don’t even THINK about spooking an elephant. That will be a disaster and the POOR elephant will get shot! So, please no craziness.

Think of the kids. Let them enjoy the elephants. We don’t have many elephants in NH. So this is their BIG chance.

IF you can help the kids with a ‘heads up’ on the train and unloading, I will do my best to get the word out
— BUT always with the admonition, NO STUPID STUFF.

Let the kids watch the elephants, in safety, PLEASE.

‘MarketWatch’ Report Cites The ‘Mini’ As The Car With Most SAFETY Complaints. I Am Not Surprised.

 ..by Anura Guruge

Click to access MarketWatch report. Interesting reading. Hyundai has the least complaints of the 10 listed! That is why we have been buying them for the last 7 years.

Though I grew up and lived in Britain when the (original) Mini was all the rage, I never liked it. Though I was never that big, I found it claustrophobic even from the outside. I am sure I have never driven one and really can’t remember ever getting inside one — which is kind of strange because it really was the most popular car around when I was going to school and university.

That people can have sex in a Mini has always amazed me — partly because I was a member of a group of Triumph sports car owners (in the 1970s) whose mission was to publicize the best ways to have sex in Spitfires, TR6s and TR7s as a public service to others.

But a Mini? Why would you? Isn’t there no shame?

Anyway …

A notion popular in the 1970s in the U.K. when it came to the TR7.
