To access ‘Documents‘ page at www.guruge.com

I am slowly trying to flesh-out this new, Weebly-basedguruge.com‘ Website — in between trying to proof my latest book and all the other stuff that keeps on cropping up.

It is kind of funny. I am not worried that ‘guruge.com’ is a work in progress. It is NOT as if people can’t find me, on the Web, if they really wanted to. So, I am stressing about ‘killing’ myself to get this Website completed.

It is also true that I do not feel any pressing compulsion to make sure that the new ‘Documents’ page is as pukkha as I would have wanted it a decade ago. This is what the old ‘Documents’ page used to look like on my FrontPage-based Website. Well, trying to showcase all my published documents really do not matter that much — anymore. My books tell their own story and I am really not that concerned about getting any new clients for my writing. So this will do. Plus, Weebly, as I am finding out to my cost and chagrin, is far, far from perfect. It is, at best, ‘OK’. Lots of limitations as to what you can do. I guess that is the compromise of using a template-based system. I am used to being able to do whatever I wanted with FrontPage — but that took a LOT of time, effort and heartache. Weebly is quick. Weebly is basically quick and dirty. But that is OK.

I at least got to better present my “1st 250 documents” list. That list, on its own, tells much of the story, or at least 65% of it. I have no ideas where I ended up at. Probably around 390 documents. Maybe more. Doesn’t really matter. 250 publications was the goal. I hadn’t looked at this documents in years, maybe 8 years! I had forgotten that I used to write for Cisco’s PACKET magazine.

Anyway, that is where I am at. I might add a shadow page, later on, called ‘More Documents‘, with access to more White Papers. I plan to have a different page for my pictorial stuff and presentations. I do not think of them especially my presentations, as ‘documents’.

I THINK this is them. I could be wrong. Click to access YouTube video.

This is definitely them. Click to access Facebook account.

They appear to be the ‘featured’ band for the 2014 Multicultural Day. They have two prime-time performances: 11:00 – 11:30 & 11:45 – 12:15.

For reasons I can’t quite fathom I had assumed, obviously incorrectly, that they were an African ensemble. Well it appears, instead, that they are ‘Native American‘ enactors. Seems good.

Click to access the official Website — which, alas, is a tad short on information even though we but 3 weeks away from the event.

So, today, Friday, August 15, 2014 this is what I got when I clicked on the ‘Program’ HOPING to see a Schedule of the Performances!
C’est la vie.

Don’t bother going here for the Schedule. Try the Facebook account below.

Luckily I did find a Facebook account with the supposed program. So that was good. Why they can’t also have this on their Website is mystery. Must be a cultural thing in Laconia.

Well unlike last year it is back in September. That is good — I think.

Tad early in my opinion, but what do I know.

It used to be the 2nd Saturday of September. I know — because the Highland Games used to be the 3rd Saturday.

But this year it is the first Saturday, albeit with September starting on a Monday.

This Week’s Web ‘Space’ Problems, Highlighted By eBay Crashes, Will Likely Get Worse UNLESS We Fix Pricing.

As somebody who made a living, a fairly comfortable one at that, for three decades working on large networks, I have been, for a long time concerned, very concerned, that we will start to run into major bandwidth issues on the Web UNLESS we in someway have the gumption to come up with a USAGE-related pricing scheme. No, this is NOT about ‘Net Neutrality‘ per se. It is more fundamental than that. Internet pricing is not, bar those that have capped wireless plans, usage-based. To make it easier to follow lets take two houses, side by side, where both houses get the same cable-based Internet access for the same price — lets say $35/month. One house might have four teenagers while the other house has no kids, just a middle-aged working couple. Well as you might be able to work out the house with the teenagers probably has considerably more Web usage than the one without kids. The same would probably be true of the electric usage of the two houses: the house with the kids probably uses more electric than the house next door. But here is the kicker — their electric bills will be different, while they still both pay the FLAT, $35/month for Internet usage.

We, as I have talked about a few times before, have two 15Mbps fiber connections to the house because the 15Mbps I could get with a single TDS line, in this rural neck of the world, wasn’t enough. Though we have 30Mbps to the house (and 7+Mbps upload bandwidth) we are, in the scheme of things, not heavy Internet users! We do very little streaming, Voice-over-IP (VoIP) or video downloading. So Internet usage is NOT the same, by any stretch, as the amount of bandwidth you pay for.

That Internet pricing is not equitable has always bothered me. I used to TRY and get ‘kids’, i.e., my students at SNHU, to understand this. They would have degrees in Computer Science and still never have thought about HOW the Internet is funded and whether the ‘funding’ was equitable. So I would always get them to think about it by including a question about it in their exams. See below.

Unless we move towards some kind of usage-related pricing we will start running into bandwidth issues. I am not concerned about storage limitations. Storage is easy to fix. Just a matter of money. Bandwidth is harder to fix. More expensive too — if you are going to do it right. So ‘space’ is more in the network rather than on what is connected to the network.

Something YOU can do to help. I spent a decade telling this to people in my seminars. When you reply to an e-mail DELETE as much of the original content that was already there as you can. I typically delete all of it. There is NO NEED to just send back what was already in the e-mail unless a bit of it is required to provide context. You are just WASTING precious network bandwidth. Each character transmitted eats up bandwidth! I worry about Internet bandwidth every day.

Click to ENLARGE. A 2004 mid-term exam for a post-graduate class I taught at the Laconia campus. I wanted them to think about the equitability of Internet funding and pricing. This is what going to kill the Web. We have to move to some level of usage-RELATED (doesn’t have to be based) pricing.

We stopped by here the day we were in Concord for Lisa DiMartino’s award ceremony — the same day we went to see “Planes — Fire and Rescue” in 3D and ended up getting our money back.

I wanted to stop because the marquee outside the shop talked about trains and in particular ‘Lionel Trains’. I had to have a look. It is a compulsion I have. Easier than walking past book stores but I do have trouble not entering stores that have trains. What can I say?

I saw the elephants at 30′ — across a room, while walking past the doorway. As soon as I saw them from the corner of my left eye I knew exactly what it was. Devanee was with me. I told her: ‘elephants from Ceylon’. I had NOT see the inlaid ‘Ceylon‘ on the bridge at that point. I was too far away.

Most middle class houses in Colombo, Ceylon would have one of these elephant bridges at the time I was growing up there, i.e., 1950s to 1967.

It was cute. Not sure how one ended up in Concord, N.H.

Walmart.com Is A Frigging Joke, A Poor, Pathetic Joke At That. Amazon Is So Far Superior It Is Not Funny!

Walmart ‘brick-and-mortar’ stores are not the same as Walmart.com as both sides go to great lentghts to point out.

That is good since I have no gripe, at all, with Walmart ‘brick-and-mortar’ stores. I actually like Walmart stores and shop at Walmart stores at least twice a month, usually more — and spend a few hundred dollars at Walmart each month.

As of today it is official — I hate Walmart.com.

Walmart.com is a bloody joke. A poor, pitiful, pathetic joke at that.

Amazon, who I am very fond of (even if I have an occasional hissy fit about their free shiping or their incompetent Call Center in the Philippines), is so far superior to Walmart.com it is not fuuny.

Amazon wins HANDS DOWN when it comes to online retailers.

Never, ever AGAIN. I will never ever again shop bloody Walmart.com. I will gladly pay more and get it from ANYBODY else — because nobody could be as bad as bloody Walmart.com.

Yes, this has to do with the stupid “Pro Series Puncture-Prone 14′ x 42′ Pool” we had to replace for this family in Alton. They got it from Walmart so I tried to get the damn replacement from Walmart.com.

I placed the bloody order July 29, 2014. Two bloody weeks ago.

Just getting tracking details of this order was difficult. I went to the Concord store TWICE hoping to pick it up — the second time today because the online order status told me that it was shipped. Not there.

Then I get this e-mail, today, saying it was DELAYED. Two bloody weeks — and it is further delayed.

Trying to get some sense out of the folks at Walmart was difficult. They can’t help it. That is OK. I am glad that Walmart provides them with a place of employment.

I cancelled the damn order, as soon as I got home, and sent Deanna with a check to pay for the pitiful Pro Series puncture-prone pool. See below. They tell me it will take TWO bloody billing cycles BEFORE I get my $199 back. Well, we will see about that.

Bloody Walmart.com.
Do NOT shop Walmart.com. SHOP AMAZON. Amazon rocks. Amazon RULES. Amazon, on the whole, is WONDERFUL.

P.S., Did I mention that Amazon is really, really good and that we are GREAT FANS of Amazon?
