My Latest ‘Wheels’ — Maybe The Spiffiest Of Them All.

by Anura Guruge

My very first time. Always wanted to try one out. Never had the guts.

Yesterday I had no choice. Wow. Easy to drive and very maneuverable. You can turn it on a dime.

Had bad luck though. No, NO, contrary to Teischan’s fears I did NOT run anyone over and I did not play bumper cars with any carts though I pretended like I was going to.

Had the battery on TWO — yes two — die on I! That wasn’t funny.

Hoping that this is not going to become a habit. I like to be mobile on my own two feet.

Oh, this was at ‘Market BasketRochester, NH.

As you may have read, here & here, I busted my knee, well & truly, last Thursday morning, when I fell awkwardly while shoveling snow. There was an almighty crack. Left knee was at a funny angle and there were things pointing out from it. I couldn’t get up. Finally hobbled into the house. Knee was in bad shape. Managed to pull on a knee brace onto it and that made a big difference. I could at least now drag the leg along.

Made it to the ER at ‘Frisbie Memorial Hospital’ in Rochester (NH) by noon — about 90-minutes after I had done the damage. I was in some pain, but I was doing OK. I hadn’t taken any pain medication and declined the first batch that was offered to I.

Once I was horizontal on the ER bed most of the pain, if not all of it, went away. I could just lie there with no pain to talk about. That is par for the course for I. {Sorry!}

They did a X-ray and a contrast CT Scan (which required the insertion of 2 IVs, the 1st apparently not large enough for the contrast dye they wanted to pump into I).

They diagnosed that I had completely ruptured (i.e., seperated) my Quadriceps Tendon.

I needed surgery, to reattach it, within 10-days. (Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.)

They gave me some acetaminophen (Tylenol) about 2-hours into my stay and a shot of morphine before I left.

But, as I was being discharged the female Physician Assistant (Certified) (PA-C), from Maine, who had taken care of me throughout my 4.25 hour stay came to check up on me.

After going through all the formalities, she said: “So, what is your secret? Mind-over-matter? This is fairly serious injury and you coped with it like it was not too bad“.

BINGO!

I told her about my ‘Brain Meditation’.

If you look at the top picture I had spelled all of that out, as a ‘Reward’, 3-years earlier.

So, here was proof.

Ability to: module pain, coping with lifestyle change and continued serenity.

‘Brain Meditation’, as I spell it out here, has served me well over the first 6-days. I am basically pain-free. Just taking 2 Aleves a day — and that is mainly as a precaution.

The Physician Assistant’s was going to check out my book. As she said, it certainly seemed to be working.

I Am Finally Bionic.

Right now, for the first time in my life, aged 65, I am CRIPPLED!

Totally tore my main Quadriceps Tendon this morning. I slipped and fell while shoveling snow.

There was an almighty CRACK and my leg was at an unusual angle.

I, from all my dry-slope skiing in the U.K. and rugby am a veteran of dislocations. Thought I had dislocated my knee. But, it was more serious than that. I could not bend it or put much weight on it.

Eventually, with help from wife, went to the ER at ‘Frisbie Memorial Hospital‘ in Rochester, NH.

They initially suspected that I had broken my knee cap. Yes, they took X-rays. Knee cap was fine but something else was wrong.

So, off to a CAT Scan with contrast. They also checked my entire leg artery for possible damage. Artery was fine.

But, Quadriceps Tendon was totally separated from the knee. It was flapping around …

Yes, I need surgery and they were going to do it tomorrow! That was too FAST. I needed some time to recover and get my head sorted out.

But, I already met with the Orthopedic team! That was pretty impressive. 6-hours in ER and then being able to meet with the surgery-group the same day.

Getting surgery next week.

Will not be running for a few days — at least. Definitely no skiing in March.

Something that TOTALLY bummed me. Running is a major cause for this injury. You just can’t win.

Well, I will keep you posted.

I am OK. The morphine IV helped.

Smile.

Mix of those taken at Home Depot & Hobby Lobby. Yes, I know that the latter ones are fake (but maybe I am making my own statement about that store {smile}). I miss flowers so this was a treat with all that snow and cold outside. Enjoy.

All 3 2018 Christmas Trees Are In Place — 2 Yet To Be Decorated.

by Anura Guruge

Teischan (12), as I may have mentioned more than once, lives, unashamedly, for Christmas — and has for most of her life, once she worked out what it was all about.

She starts talking about Christmas in September and it was no different this year though she is a year older! She started nagging me about getting the Christmas trees at Thanksgiving. I kept on saying: “in December, in December“.

We bought our Christmas trees locally in Alton last year. They were not doing trees this year. Then earlier this week, driving through Rochester we saw a sign that said that the boy scout troop will be selling Christmas trees, for $35/each, on Saturday, December 8, 2018 (and for that matter the Sunday also). Seemed like a good cause and the price was not bad. So, I agreed that today would be the day for the trees. Looking back I realize that we are 3 days behind what we were last year. No wonder she has been complaining.

Got the trees from the Scouts. Good deal. Lots of adults to help and they insisted on doing everything. For the first time ever I didn’t have to do anything. They put it on the roof and even tied it down. I was impressed. Going back to them next year, though Teischan, a connoisseur of Christmas trees, is not too happy with the two we got today. She does have a point. They both have a bald spot close to the top. Not too serious. But she noticed.

Anywho, all three trees are now up. They will decorate and put up the lights tomorrow.

Flowers Of ‘China Palace’, Rochester, NH — Thanksgiving 2018.

Our tradition of having Chinese on all major holidays — Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas — has been fairly well documented in this blog.

The last two years we have ended up going to ‘China Palace’ in Rochester at Thanksgiving — because it is the ONLY Chinese place open locally! That is the only two times we have been there — which is ironic. It is NOT a bad place. Decent food, very nice staff (albeit all ‘white’ with no Chinese in sight), interesting decor with a fair amount of flowers — real and fake.

I had to take some pictures of the flowers and share them with you.

Honestly NOT a bad place. Decent, competitively priced food and cocktails. Will recommend it. I am going to make a point of trying to go there outside of Thanksgiving.
