Rochester is always a good hunting grounds for pictures of flowers. Today was no exception. I lucked out. I think I still have at least a month left in terms of being able to snap pretty flowers OUTSIDE before the snow arrives in New Hampshire. So, I am going to make the best of that. Foliage is early this year. Very early. So, with luck I will be able to transition from flowers to foliage. Enjoy.

‘Vetco’, Dog Vaccinations, At ‘Petco’ — Convenient Enough, Not Sure About Actual Savings.

by Anura Guruge

Given that she gets the dogs groomed at Petco, Deanna gets all sorts of e-mails and offers from them. One that she got recently was for Vetco — pet vaccinations at Petco.

Both dogs, Maya & Braxton, needed vaccinations. So, we decided to try them because they claimed to be cheaper.

Well, we went to the Sunday, April 14, 2019 clinic at our local Petco in Rochester. We got there about 12:45. Registration was easy enough though it could have been quicker if it was done on a proper PC screen as opposed to a 9″ tablet.

For a full complement of shots, including a rabies booster, it was $99 per dog. I am not sure how much of a saving that was. I just can’t remember.

One other thing bothers me. The rabies booster was only for 1-year. My previous one was for 3-years. To be fair they only charged $10 each for the rabies. But, that is something else I want to investigate.

But, overall a decent, positive experience. Convenient enough. There were 7 others ahead of us, but they saw us within 20-minutes or so. The vet was pleasant and appeared to be competent. Well, we now have another year before we need to worry about shots for the dogs again.

My Latest ‘Wheels’ — Maybe The Spiffiest Of Them All.

by Anura Guruge

My very first time. Always wanted to try one out. Never had the guts.

Yesterday I had no choice. Wow. Easy to drive and very maneuverable. You can turn it on a dime.

Had bad luck though. No, NO, contrary to Teischan’s fears I did NOT run anyone over and I did not play bumper cars with any carts though I pretended like I was going to.

Had the battery on TWO — yes two — die on I! That wasn’t funny.

Hoping that this is not going to become a habit. I like to be mobile on my own two feet.

Oh, this was at ‘Market BasketRochester, NH.

Unsolicited Validation Of ‘Brain Meditation’ By An ER Physician Assistant (Certified).

As you may have read, here & here, I busted my knee, well & truly, last Thursday morning, when I fell awkwardly while shoveling snow. There was an almighty crack. Left knee was at a funny angle and there were things pointing out from it. I couldn’t get up. Finally hobbled into the house. Knee was in bad shape. Managed to pull on a knee brace onto it and that made a big difference. I could at least now drag the leg along.

Made it to the ER at ‘Frisbie Memorial Hospital’ in Rochester (NH) by noon — about 90-minutes after I had done the damage. I was in some pain, but I was doing OK. I hadn’t taken any pain medication and declined the first batch that was offered to I.

Once I was horizontal on the ER bed most of the pain, if not all of it, went away. I could just lie there with no pain to talk about. That is par for the course for I. {Sorry!}

They did a X-ray and a contrast CT Scan (which required the insertion of 2 IVs, the 1st apparently not large enough for the contrast dye they wanted to pump into I).

They diagnosed that I had completely ruptured (i.e., seperated) my Quadriceps Tendon.

I needed surgery, to reattach it, within 10-days. (Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.)

They gave me some acetaminophen (Tylenol) about 2-hours into my stay and a shot of morphine before I left.

But, as I was being discharged the female Physician Assistant (Certified) (PA-C), from Maine, who had taken care of me throughout my 4.25 hour stay came to check up on me.

After going through all the formalities, she said: “So, what is your secret? Mind-over-matter? This is fairly serious injury and you coped with it like it was not too bad“.

BINGO!

I told her about my ‘Brain Meditation’.

If you look at the top picture I had spelled all of that out, as a ‘Reward’, 3-years earlier.

So, here was proof.

Ability to: module pain, coping with lifestyle change and continued serenity.

‘Brain Meditation’, as I spell it out here, has served me well over the first 6-days. I am basically pain-free. Just taking 2 Aleves a day — and that is mainly as a precaution.

The Physician Assistant’s was going to check out my book. As she said, it certainly seemed to be working.

I Am Finally Bionic.

Right now, for the first time in my life, aged 65, I am CRIPPLED!

Totally tore my main Quadriceps Tendon this morning. I slipped and fell while shoveling snow.

There was an almighty CRACK and my leg was at an unusual angle.

I, from all my dry-slope skiing in the U.K. and rugby am a veteran of dislocations. Thought I had dislocated my knee. But, it was more serious than that. I could not bend it or put much weight on it.

Eventually, with help from wife, went to the ER at ‘Frisbie Memorial Hospital‘ in Rochester, NH.

They initially suspected that I had broken my knee cap. Yes, they took X-rays. Knee cap was fine but something else was wrong.

So, off to a CAT Scan with contrast. They also checked my entire leg artery for possible damage. Artery was fine.

But, Quadriceps Tendon was totally separated from the knee. It was flapping around …

Yes, I need surgery and they were going to do it tomorrow! That was too FAST. I needed some time to recover and get my head sorted out.

But, I already met with the Orthopedic team! That was pretty impressive. 6-hours in ER and then being able to meet with the surgery-group the same day.

Getting surgery next week.

Will not be running for a few days — at least. Definitely no skiing in March.

Something that TOTALLY bummed me. Running is a major cause for this injury. You just can’t win.

Well, I will keep you posted.

I am OK. The morphine IV helped.

Smile.
