‘Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey’ HO-Scale Train Set — If You Are An Avid Collector.

by Anura Guruge

Cute and nostalgic in that ‘Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey‘, at least for now, are gone.

I saw this in an e-mail this morning.

Yes, I was mildly curious in that I am a big fan of ‘The Greatest Show On Earth‘ and like trains and train sets.

But, to be fair this was not compelling even putting aside that it was just in HO scale. My days of HO are long gone. My current layout is N while still have a lot of Z!

They could have done better. No animal wagons and just two passenger cars and the livery isn’t that great. Expensive too — though that could be because it is HO.

Just wanted to share it with you.

The ‘Elephant Sanctuary’ In Tennessee, Currently With 10 Elephants — Closed To The Public But With ‘Webcams’ Called ‘Elecams’.

by Anura Guruge

The Webcam, i.e., Elecam, page. Use link at top to access. By the time I got around to doing this it was close to 9pm (Eastern) and I assume the elephants had gone to bed in that I couldn’t see any activity.

Deanna send me a link to this ‘Elephant Sanctuary‘ this morning and asked me to do a blog post and stress that they have Elicams.

I think I had heard about this sanctuary before, BUT I am more than happy to publicize it since I deeply care about the welfare of all elephants — coming from Ceylon where we have both wild and domesticated elephants, some as pets for the landed wealthy.

Appears it was founded 22-years ago, in its current location, albeit with 1/12th the land, by Carol Buckley and Scott Blais to provide a safe and comfortable refuge for one ex=performing elephant. They have grown since then and have had up to 27 elephants at one time — all of them former circus or zoo elephants. This is great. Unlike in Sri Lanka, where we also have a famous elephant sanctuary, they don’t have to worry about taking care of orphaned baby elephants.

I do get this Tennesse confused with the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey ‘Center for Elephant Conservation‘ (CEC) for their retired elephants.

The link to this site, http://www.ringlingelephantcenter.com, is NO LONGER working!

I went looking for this site just now and was chagrined to find that the link no longer works! That does not make me happy. I, of course, Googled. Can’t find anything that says it has closed. Maybe they took down the link to avoid cyber and possibly in person harassment by those that have gone after the circus for so long about their elephants. I will have to keep an eye on this.

The Original ‘Ringling Brothers’ Did Their First Circus This Day 133 Years Ago; May 19, 1884.

by Anura Guruge

Last appearance in New Hampshire and WE were there.

Poignant.

The last performance will be May 21, 2017.

So, 2 days AFTER this 133-year anniversary — albeit that this is JUST for the ‘Ringling Brothers‘ side.

IF I was in charge, I would have closed TODAY — just for the symmetry. BUT, ‘they’ did not want to miss out on a Sunday performance, hence May 21.

Spare a THOUGHT. I, however, think that they will be back in a couple of years!

Us At The Last Day Of The Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus In Manchester, NH — April 23, 2017.

From 2 years ago.

There was NO way we were NOT going to get our picture taken at this SUPPOSEDLY the last performance of ‘THE circus‘ in Manchester.

We were trying to work it this morning as to how many performances we have gone to. It is definitely at least 8 years in a row.

Kind of sad. I, however, think they will be back within 2 years.

Stay tuned. Many more pictures to post.

Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey May No Longer Have Elephants But The Kora Shrine Circus DOES!

by Anura Guruge

From their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/korashriners). And I think this is RECENTLY. They had 3 performing today (Saturday) in Augusta.

Click to access their Web page.

From their Facebook page. Looks colorful enough.

From their Facebook page again. I heard that Ringling have stopped doing the human cannonball too!

We were in Maine today, and Deanna’s niece had taken her 3-year old son to ‘the circus‘ in Augusta, Maine.

She was telling us all about it when she casually mentioned that ‘this year’ they had 3 elephants performing — whereas in past years they have only had one perform.

WOW. I grilled her. Appears that there were NO demonstrators, no protests.

Wow.

I checked it out as soon as I got home.

VERY different to Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey.

For a start they do a 9:30am show. That would be good for some kids. I heard, however, that the 9:30am show, in Augusta, on Saturday, April 22, 2017, was not even half full!

Their MOST expensive tickets — reserved seating — is only $12! I am not even going to tell you what we are paying for our tickets, in Manchester, for Ringling Brothers.

The elephant dichotomy seems incongruous.

Was it JUST Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey that were targeted? If so that would be unfair. How do we know that these other circuses treat their elephants any differently?

I need to research this further.

THE Circus. Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey, Coming To Manchester, NH, For The Very Last Time This Friday.

This is going to be SAD.

Yes, of course, we have tickets. {SMILE}

We have been going to this circus, in Manchester, without fail, for the last 7 or 8 years. It was a cherished annual ritual.

I will miss it. It was always fun. Often quite the spectacle.

Yes, we noticed that the audience size kept on shrinking. I worried that they would stop coming to New Hampshire. Never expected them to close shop altogether. Ironically there has been a RUN on the tickets for this last appearance. Typical.

I suspect ‘they’ will be back, in a few years, under another name with a scaled-down operation.

Of course I will let you know how it was.

This is a CRYING SHAME.

I like the Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus. We have been going to their Manchester, NH, performance, each year, without fail, for the last 7 or 8 years. Maybe more.

We were at the Sunday, May 8, 2016 performance. That could very well have been the last performance in New Hampshire.

This is a shame.

I am going to try and get in ONE LAST SHOW before they close. They are supposed to come to Manchester, April 21 to 23, 2017. We will have to go to that, IF that is still on.

I had worried for a few years that they would stop coming to Manchester because attendance was so low. Never thought it would come to this.

So now we have ‘Cirque du Soleil’ and the ‘Big Apple‘. Though we love ‘Cirque’ it is not your old-fashioned, traditional circus and the ‘Big Apple’ no longer comes to New Hampshire.

This is a SHAME.
