Watching the gay abandon with which these Japanese companies roll out extremely marginal digital camera offerings — e.g., Canon Rebel T6i vs T6s — you would NOT realize that they are ALL bleeding money like crazy.

Yes, there is HUGE undisciplined and unrestrained mismanagement. Canon, Nikon and Sony could save MILLIONS of dollars a year IF they would just rationalize their digital camera offerings and concentrate on just providing a few ‘best in class’ products rather than hundreds of hard to differentiate models.

Lets us NOT forget Kodak and Polaroid.

Both of these U.S. companies were iconic pioneering GIANTS. They are basically GONE!

So cameras companies can stumble, badly, and end up in death spirals.

With smartphone cameras eating into digital camera sales on a daily basis I expect a MAJOR shakedown and consolidation of the digital camera market over the next 18 months.

IT HAS TO HAPPEN.

These companies have to play smarter. The current situation is untenable.

Talk about a let down. I saw the ‘B&H’ ad. for an Hasselblad on Facebook. When I saw the price I did get EXCITED. I have always lusted after an Hasselblad! At $1,299 I could seriously afford it — though Deanna would brain me (though she is convinced that I will buy myself another camera (my 3rd in the last few months) before Christmas).

Given that I do NOT keep up with Hasselblads I checked. I was CRUSHED. It is a re-branded Sony NEX-7 and the DEAD GIVEAWAY is that it uses Sony E-mount lenses. It has a different facade — BUT it is NOT manufactured by Hasselblad in Sweden. Instead it is made by Sony in Thailand. Screw that for a game of soldiers. To be fair I have toyed at the idea of getting a NEX.

They are NOT the only ones doing this unbecoming rebranding trick. The Leica VLux is the very same camera as my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 (with a longer warranty)!

But I am going to wait. Right now my goal is to wait for the Fuji X-T2. We, and by that I do mean us as a family, most likely will get a GoPro for Christmas. I own GoPro stock. So it seems the right thing to do. Devanee would like one.

Devanee Wants Me To Get A Lytro Illum At ~$450.

After seeing my post about the deep discount on the Lytro Illum Devanee wants me to get one. To be fair, as I did point out, it did cross my mind that I probably should get one at ‘that’ price — though the current ‘non-rebate’ price is $449. So when Devanee says I should get one all the domestic dynamics change! Devanee is nobody’s fool when it comes to cars and cameras! She has worked it out that IF she encourages my taste then she can benefit from that. And there is no harm in that — and she has an MGB and a Canon Rebel T3i to prove it, with another Jag to come!

So when Devanee says I should get one … the mother stays mum. Plus Deanna is convinced that I am going to get ANOTHER camera for Christmas! She has come to the conclusion, I do not know how or why, that I am addicted to cameras. Am I?

I really, really wasn’t going to get another one this year. Seriously. But now that Devanee says I should get a Lytro Illum …

Did some reading on the Lytro Illum last night. Kind of what I suspected. It appears to be pretty USELESS in the two areas that matter most to me … landscape and low light.

But the whole notion of REFOCUS appeals to me — tremendously. Plus I am a great fan of Panasonic since my Lumix FZ1000 proved to be such a huge success. I realize that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 is the BIG BOY version of my FZ1000. But I really don’t want to get into interchangeable lenses again with anything LESS than APSC. Hence my PLAN to wait for the Fuji X-T2

But then there is the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ300K! Great ZOOM up to 600mm, 5 axis stabilization and a CONSTANT max. aperture of f2.8. This camera — now with REFOCUS via firmware — could BE perfect for me BUT for the sensor size. 1/2.3″ sensor. YIKES. That is SO, SO SMALL. But then again 99% of the pictures I take are for use on the Web. I can get away with a small sensor. OK. If on Cyber Monday, i.e., tomorrow, or before Christmas, I see the FZ300 BELOW $500 I will get one.

As I predicted just 5 days ago the new revolutionary REFOCUS (at home) on Panasonic cameras, GX8, G7 & FZ300, is NOT good news for Lytro.

Others, Sony, Canon etc. will try to offer the same REFOCUS capability — assuming that Lytro or Panasonic does not have an enforceable patent on it. It could be that the technology is so ‘obvious’ that it could not be patented.

The last $100 DEAL that was required to get the price down to $399 at Amazon appears to have EXPIRED already. Not sure whether that was a ‘scam’ of sorts. But even $499 isn’t bad. My feeling is that the price will CONTINUE to go down!

Panasonic New Refocus (At Home) Feature, on GX8, G7 & FZ300, Is HUGE.

This is HUGE!

This will revolutionize the entire digital camera industry.

It is NOT new. Lytro Illum, as I talked about way back in January 2015, was pushing this concept.

What is it?

The ability to FIX your exact focusing and depth-of-field — and change it if you want (multiple times and different ways) — AFTER a photograph has been taken, using software.

You will never ever again take a picture that is out of focus!

You can get perfect, spot-on focus, with any depth-of-field effect you want, at home — after the pictures is taken.

Yes, it probably will only work with RAW and I, to-date, have resisted using RAW or even any post-processing.

But this HUGE. I am surprised that I am not seeing more coverage of this.

Stay tuned. This could be the end of fuzzy pictures.

Though I keep on telling myself that I have a tryst with destiny with the Fuji X-T2, I have been itching to get a Panasonic G7. Hhhmmm! Yes, the stock market has been VERY GOOD to me.

But, I just wanted to share this with you in case YOU missed it.
