Going to the Sandwich Fair (N.H.) is never an option. We always GO. The only variable, based on a bunch of criteria, weather always among them, is whether we go on Saturday, Sunday or Monday (going on Friday night just for the rides never a consideration). Shows, next to weather (and Teischan’s ballet), tend to play a big role. This year we picked Sunday because we wanted to see Roderick Russell. Our ‘buddies’, the ever delightful ‘Annie & The Orphans‘ were playing, twice, maybe thrice, on Monday BUT Roderick prevailed because we had already seen (and pressed the flesh with) Annie and the boys TWICE already this Summer. A bonus on going on Sunday is THE PARADE. It is always fun though this year I was saddened that my friend Ray Burton would no longer be there. I think it was the first parade, in decades, without Ray. Well I remembered Ray. WE hope to be in the parade next year. IF we make it I might take along a picture of Ray so that he again can be in the Parade.

So here are some picture … and then, per my new wont, a 95 image photo montage, as a video, on YouTube. You know the drill.

He wanted me to take his picture. I managed to click it. He was happy. I DO NOT have a clue as to who he is. IF you recognize him, or her, tell him, or her, that they are online. Cracked me up how happy he was that I snapped his picture — hence the thumbs up.

Our whole trip to the Sandwich Fair this year (a fair that we go to every year without fail) was all planned around the Roderick Russell show on Sunday. We saw him doing his astounding sword swallowing act two years ago at Sandwich and have been great fans of his ever since — that he had me on stage may have played a part. His show was scheduled to start at 11:20 and we got there just after 11.

We are glad we made a point of going to it. It was quite the show. World class entertainment. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post I am not a stranger to hypnosis though I have steadfastly refused to be hypnotized — for exactly the very same reasons that I never did drugs (though I hung around with some very heavy users). Ever since I was quite young I have kind of known that I like how my brain is and I don’t want anything messing with it (though some will argue that I should quit the wine if I am that concerned).

I wasn’t sure what to expect with Roderick. We know he is a mentalist too and I knew he would somehow meld the two together. To be honest I was worried for him. Wasn’t sure how a hypnosis show would go down at Sandwich — on a Sunday morning. Sword swallowing is one thing, hypnosis a very different ball game. I need not have worried. Roderick Russell excelled. He exceeded all of my expectations for the entertainment quotient. He is GOOD. Very good and he knows it — which is good.

He had the near packed crowd totally mesmerized and entertained. They will be having him back again. Of that there is no doubt or debate. He sure delivered on what he must have promised. He entertained.

Yes, Deanna volunteered. She has had some experience with hypnosis (though without much luck). She wasn’t, however, on stage for long. She is not a good hypnosis candidate.

So there is one key issue that has to be asked given that I am a professional cynic — and Deanna too has questions today. No doubt, no question this was CLASS entertainment. Better than any comedy act — ever. But was it real?

Only Roderick Russell can really answer that.

That said, IF you want to be entertained, go see Roderick Russell. This is his magical Website.

I shot 135 images during the show! Some didn’t come off as well as I would have liked. The stage was backlit by some strong sunshine during the entire show. As is my recent wont I put all these images into YouTube and created 6:42 minute photo montage set to music. The images are in chronological order. So they are as I shot them during the 1 hour show. You should be able to get a feel for what was happening. As ever I got some local color too. The chef is no other than Common Man owner Alex Ray. Don’t pay much heed to the older gentleman taking a nap. Maybe Roderick had hypnotized him at a distance.

Of course we went. We never miss. We went on Sunday, October 12, 2014 — mainly because we wanted to see Roderick Russell in action. And we are sure glad we did. Roderick Russell’s hypnosis show put ‘astounding’ to shame! I am no stranger to hypnosis. Growing up, in Ceylon, I had a hypnotist as a next door neighbor. Roderick, who we had met two years ago at Sandwich, did a WORLD CLASS show. Wow! I am going to do a whole post on it. I took about 120 pictures. It was that good and better. He is an unique talent. A very nice young man too.

It was a gorgeous day. Could not have been any better for this time of the year. Perfect. Goldilocks Day. Just right. Not too crowded, not deserted. Not too cold, not too hot (though I had to shed one layer of clothing). All was good.

Sandwich Fair always delivers. This was grand. We are happy. Thank YOU Sandwich.

I appear to have taken upwards of 550 pictures — not counting some I deleted on the spot. So it will take me some time to get them into forms that I can share.

But for now I just wanted to share these 10 pictures from today with you. OK?

The soul and voice of Sandwich Fair, the evergreen, MR. NICE GUY, Mr. Talent, the one-and-only Art Harriman, an amazing entertainer.

The mesmerizing, very dashing, superbly talented, very personable Roderick Russell picking candidates for his breathtakingly good, and very, very funny, hypnosis show.

Not sure who she is BUT she seems to be having a ball. I have been told that her name is ‘Teischan’.

We as a family have yet to miss a single Sandwich Fair. As it happens Deanna and I used to go to the Fair, without fail, even before we met in 2002 — though we never saw each other, even when I used to be there for nearly the day selling raffle tickets, for a Harley, for Laconia Rotary Club. Not sure which day we will make it — though we know it won’t be Friday night when they have just the midway open for cheap rides. It is a 4-day long weekend for us, so there is plenty of scope. The Fair always falls close to Devanee’s birthday, on the 10th, and in past year’s we have even ‘done’ her birthday at the Fair.

OK. We will see YOU at the Fair — on one of those day. Enjoy.

I love this New Hampshire made, native Indian design flutes. Yesterday was not the first time I have stopped and admired this stall. It has been one of my favorites for a number of years. Yesterday, I only stopped by briefly. In other years I have stopped and enjoyed the tactile thrill of these flutes and talked to the artist.

Maybe I should tell Deanna to get me one for Christmas. I do like wood inlay objects. A couple of years ago, at my behest, Deanna got me this beautiful, wood inlaid backgammon set from the National Geographic catalog. I don’t use it. I keep it as an object de art.

Raven Song Flutes are on the Web.

P1090108This is Gene Matras from Pittsfield.

I noticed his work yesterday. It stopped me dead in my tracks. He was kind of diagonally across from the flutes (above).

Being a very colorful person, by birth, black-and-white ink drawings are not one of my favorite media for art — though I do have a fairly large ink drawing of a mill, that I bought when I first came to the U.S. (the second time around) in 1985. It hangs in our downstairs family room.

I, however, have to say that Gene’s work is AMAZING. The sheer detail and authenticity is breathtaking. WOW.

This is his Web. I am glad he has a decent Web site.

genematras

genematrashorseHe had a PRINT of this at the stall.

It was blinking beautiful. So much detail.

I asked him what he had done with the original. Of course he had sold it. I asked him for roughly how much: $2,000.

I, of course, do NOT have the money, BUT if I had $2,000 to spend on art I would seriously consider buying one of his originals!

He reminds me of my one-time ‘buddy’, the one-and-only David Shepard — though David was into color.

Gene lives in Pittsfield. I go through Pittsfield at least once a week. I might have to give him a call and see if I can visit him in his home gallery.
