Authorities Now ADMIT That Container Ship Grounded In The ‘Suez Canal’ Could Have Been ‘Human Error’ — After My Post.

by Anura Guruge

This video shows the container ship swinging around like a drunk sailor BEFORE getting wedged.

They, i.e., the Canal authorities (all Egyptians), are now grudgingly admitting that it was NOT high winds. I knew that, & I am not that much of an expert!

They say it could have been ‘human error or technical malfunction’. OK? How come there wasn’t RADIO communications. A SOS!

Plus, these ships like commercial planes have VOICE RECORDERS on the bridge & ‘black boxes‘. What do they say.

This is MIGHTY suspicious.

IF this was a commercial plane, they would NOT have ruled out foul play for days. Hhhmmm.

I am going to be following this more closely. I will keep you posted. Stay tuned.

As I explained in this post, last week, for the last 10-months I have started listening to the radio during my 2-hours a day of walking/light jogging. Helps me deal with the time. I just listen to local FM stations — NHPR/NPR (on 89.1 or 90.1) and music. Nothing too esoteric. Now that the BBC doesn’t transmit on SW, I have no use, whatsoever, for SW.

I had bought a fake ‘Grundig’ from ‘Eton Corp.’ to meet my needs. It was a decent radio. Good reception. Good sound. But, it was big, heavy and bulky. I could carry it around but it felt like lugging a brick. Then I found this on Amazon. $13? I pay that much for exotic drinks at Chinese restaurants. I could afford $13. So, I got one.

Well, you can see my review. I was blown away and I am not the only one raving. It is not fancy. Just FM and basically manual tuning — albeit with the radio auto-locating all the available stations. The stereo sound with earbuds is beyond amazing.

If you are in the market for a great FM radio, check this out. You will not be dissapointed.

I Bought A ‘Grundig’ Radio Which Is ‘Fake’ & I Am V. Happy That It Is NOT A ‘Grundig’.

No, this is not gobbledygook. It makes eminent sense. I wanted a radio whose quality was akin to that of a legendary ‘Grundig’, but I was happy if it wasn’t German! I do my best to avoid German products — especially bloody German cars. Why? Very simple. Others may have, BUT I have yet to forgive them for BOMBING my beloved England. Yep. Yes, the Japanese bombed Ceylon once — but, as far as I am concerned, WE the Allies exacted our retribution on them. Anywho … I am just glad that I was able to get an American designed, Chinese built radio that is purpoted to be as good as a Grundig — without it actually being a Grundig.

Growing up in Ceylon, before I witnessed, with my own two-eyes the damage that the bloody Germans had wreaked on Liverpool, I was into Grundig radios — both desktop and portable. We didn’t have TV. Just radio. Though there was a paucity of imported goods we did have a smattering of Grundigs. Grundigs were good.

I had NO idea that Grundig had gone ‘kaput’ in 2003. I didn’t realize that German companies went kaput. Well they did. ‘Grundig’ is now just a brand name used by others.

Eton has bought the U.S. rights for the name. The radio is not German. It is not bad. I have only used it for less than 30-minutes, but so far, so good.

For the last 10-months I have started listening to the radio during my 2-hours a day of walking/light jogging. Helps me deal with the time.

Learnt a lot about portable radios in the last few days. Suffice to say the Chinese are BIG. Yes, Sony has presence and products but the Chinese are eating their lunch.

The First 2019 Christmas Trees In Place (Partially Lit) — 8 Days Earlier Than Last Year; Two More To Go.

by Anura Guruge

She has an even SMALLER one on her desk.

Teischan (12), unashamedly, lives for Christmas — and has for most of her life, once she worked out what it was all about.

She starts talking about Christmas in September!

When she was younger we could dictate as to when preparations for Christmas would come. But, starting last year she has taken matters into her own hands. When she was little we waited until at least the first week of December before we started.

For the last couple of years she can do it ALL without help. She can — and will — put out all the lights by herself.

She knows where HER artificial tree is stored and can go get it and set it up by herself.

Last year she set it up on November 17. The previous year it was November 27. At this rate she will have her tree up in October of next year!

She still has to wait for us to get the real trees. But, she will start nagging soon.

First Of The 3 Christmas Trees For 2018 In Place — 10 Days Earlier Than Last Year.

The “American Girl Dolls” are also getting ready for Christmas.

Advent Calendars have been located THOUGH we have 2 weeks (14-days) to go.

Not anymore. I see that last year HER tree went up on November 27.

Well, this year it was November 17 — 10 full days earlier. She also, with my help, brought down (from the space above our double garage) some of the outdoor christmas lights — which she intends to put up tomorrow. That is one neat thing. She insists on doing this herself. I (at 65) am off the hook.

We started listening to Christmas music, on the radio, on FM 94.9, earlier this week. They too keep on bringing forward Christmas.

Stay tuned. Christmas is still 38 days away and we have many rituals to perform and observe.

Merry Christmas.

Sputnik 2, With ‘Laika’, The FIRST Animal In Space, Was Launched This Day, 60-Years Ago; November 3, 1957.

The Sputnik 2 & ‘Laika’ THE DOG!

Wow, I remember it well and can still recall those exciting days. I had just turned 4. It was BIG news in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). We did NOT have TV in the country at that stage, but it was covered, extensively, in the newspapers and radio.

I became a space junkie with the launch of Sputnik — and I guess I still am.

Exciting times. Wow. 60-years ago. But still vivid in my mind.

The Space Age Started This Day, 60-Years Ago, With The Soviet Launched Sputnik 1; October 4, 1957.

The Sputnik.

I remember it well. I had just turned 4. It was BIG news in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). We did NOT have TV in the country at that stage, but it was covered, extensively, in the newspapers and radio.

My adoptive father, a news and political junkie, was excited. Much of what I heard and learnt was from him.

And then there was my surrogate father, a white, Baptist, lawyer (for the Ceylon Ministry of Food) who was BIG into dabbling in things electrical — so much so that all of his other nephews and nieces, bar I, called him ‘Light Mama‘ (i.e., Light-father, the ‘light’ a reference to his fondness for all things electric). I just called him ‘Ta‘. That happens to be the first two letters of ‘Tatta‘ — our Sinhalese name for ‘father’ (and very similar to the Yiddish word for father). I called my adoptive father, ‘Tatta’, and my surrogate father ‘Ta’. Makes sense, right?

Well, ‘Ta’, was very excited too in his reserved, dignified, lawyerly manner. He managed to tune one of his many radios, some built from scratch by him using vacuum tubes, to hear the ‘beep … beep’ signal.

60-years ago. Wow.

You know that I got to meet Yuri Gagarin, the first man EVER in space, when he visited Ceylon 4-years after the Sputnik.

Was Pope Francis’ Latest “Imminent Coming Of Jesus” A Veiled Reference To Trump And ‘End Times’?

by Anura Guruge

You need to know and understand Christian theology to appreciate the implications of what Pope Francis may be saying.

Rejoice in the IMMINENT coming of Jesus is more than an exhortation to enjoy the celebration of the coming Christmas.

The Second Coming of Jesus is a cornerstone of Christianity.

Christians have been waiting, inordinately patiently, for this Second Coming for over 2,000 years! The Apostles and the early Jesus followers in the Holy Land truly believed that the Second Coming would occur during their lifetime. That was 2,000 years ago.

But, prior to the Second Coming there has to ‘End Times’. That is all part of the accepted sequence. Pope Francis is a big believer in ‘End Times’  and WARNED that it may soon be with us just a YEAR AGO after the terror attacks in Paris. Here is but one reference. Google “Pope Francis Paris end times” for many more.

From my reading the pope is again back on this theme. The question is whether his new concern has to do with the new World order under Trump?

Radio On ‘Nissan Quest SV’ 2015/2016 Disappointingly Anemic!

by Anura Guruge

questsvradiosdfsf

The Nissan Quest SV minivan we bought, from ‘Somersworth Nissan‘, was would have to be categorized as an impulse buy. I had never even heard of the name “Quest” in terms of minivans. I was looking for a Nissan Pathfinder having driven 1,500+ miles on a rented one when we went to Yosemite. But Deanna and Tesichan had their hearts set on a minivan and this was to be Deanna’s vehicle rather than mine. So it was only fair that she got to chose. We didn’t do much of a test drive and Deanna drove throughout.

Looking back I now realize that during the test drive the radio was on the Sirius Demo channel. That sounded OK. And that is also the case with CDs. CDs sound fine. Not great, but definitely acceptable.

Not so with FM radio — at least with the major central New Hampshire stations. It is very tinny, underpowered and staticky. The radio on my 2002 Jaguar XJ8 is better — and that is saying something given the 14-year difference in technology. One of the problems, from what I can see, are that the front speakers are lame and badly positioned. They are mounted in the footwell so to speak and do not do a good job projecting the sound upwards. They would have been better off with 4 smaller speakers — 2 mounted higher up, either on top of the dash or on the door.

So be warned. If you are in the market for a Nissan Quest — check the radio and make sure that it meets YOUR requirements.

No we will not countenance an aftermarket upgrade. I guess that would be possible — for the right price. We will just live with it.
