He openly asked God to intervene. That was over 3-weeks ago.
Tens of thousands have died.
He must know that he failed.
He must know that he has much say with God as I do — and I might even contend that I have a better relationship with God since he knows I am, totally 100% honest, no nonsense.
The Pope has failed.
Look at the picture. He is slumped to a side.
That he dropped his ‘Vicar of Christ‘ title is NO COINCIDENCE.
He knows he is NOT the ‘Vicar of Christ‘.
He know that he has been an imposter.
Pope Francis Dropping The ‘VICAR OF CHRIST’ Title — Canon Anthony Churchill, STL, From The U.K. Has This To Say.
Father Anthony Churchill, STL, of Sussex, U.K. is one of my closest collaborators when it comes to my papal work. Do a search on this blog for ‘Fr. Churchill’.
He, as the STL, denotes (see below) is extremely knowledgeable on theology. He has spent much time in Rome and has has concelebrated Mass with Paul VI in Rome and Pope Benedict XVI in London.
The Vicar of Christ
The interesting fact about this new layout of the Vatican Year Book is political rather than theological. Such a change could hardly have been made without the knowledge and approval of the Pope himself. It is at once strange and, to my mind, most inappropriate.
This kind of decision does not in any way alter Catholic theology.
In Catholic teaching the Bishop of Rome is in virtue of that office the successor of St Peter, and as such he is the visible sign and instrument of the unity of the Church worldwide.
Various titles have been acquired over the centuries, which reflect historical realities. Thus the Pope is considered as the Primate of Italy and Archbishop of the Roman Province. Neither title is essential to his office, but have developed over the centuries.
The most important titles are “Servant of the servants of God” invented by Pope St Gregory the Great in the sixth century. It describes what Pope ought to be.
The other is “Vicar of Christ”.
This expresses the Pope’s function as Peter’s successor. I believe that it came into use in the late Middle Ages. Before that it had been more common to speak of the Pope as “Vicar of Peter”. Either way these titles describe what the Pope is called to be and to do.
Whether or not we use these titles does not take away from what we see as the God given function of the Pope as Peter’s successor, all that goes with that.
That said, I think this is a most odd decision. It seems to elevate the importance of the particular individual who happens to be the Pope at any one time.
In my view these ancient titles are part of our Catholic tradition and reflect the historical development of the Papacy over the centuries.
This decision, whoever was responsible, was ill judged.
The Pope is not to impose his own will on the Church without regard to the Faith and practice handed down. He is called to “preside in love” over the whole Church and to serve the unity of the Church as shepherd and teacher.
I fear that the present Pope does not always act wisely in this regard.
I have always maintained that the Pope as ‘Vicar of Christ’
has moral responsibilities.
This is HUGE!
The implications are staggering.
And in the midst of the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic?
Timing is extremely strange & suspect.
Basically the pope is saying: ‘I do NOT represent Christ/God on Earth. Do not hold me responsible. I am just the Bishop of Rome‘.
Cardinal Gerhard Müller points out that in the new presentations of the titles of the Pope, there are mixed together titles with dogmatic significance with those that do not bear such weight and who have a historical background (such as “Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City”).
German Cardinal Gerhard Müller supposedly called this an “embarrassment” & “a theological barbarism“. Wow.
Make up your own mind.
This is HUGE. Trust me on that.
The Timing? The Timing?
This is crazy.
I have said that he is the Donald Trump of Popes. SMILE.
But, maybe Donald Trump will try to buy this title from the Pope. It has to be worth Trillions.
A friend (& collaborator), a devout, lifelong Catholic asked me to address this.
So, I am.
One could assume that God will NOT allow this to happen.
If so this is all academic.
There are essentially 4 scenarios:
- Francis, prior to anything going awry, issues an edit that the conclave can be delayed.
Highly, highly UNLIKELY. Popes hate having the papacy vacant — on the valid premise that ‘when the cat is away the mice will play‘.
- Francis, prior to anything going awry, issues an edit permitting secure, remote voting.
Unlikely, and the Vatican will struggle trying to implement, in time, a proven, secure methodology to permit totally untraceable vote casting.
- Cardinal electors already in Rome and those able to travel will hold a conclave and ‘openly’ elect an ELDERLY caretaker pope with a tacit understanding that he will resign (per Benedict XVI) in June 2021.
- Cardinal electors already in Rome and those able to travel will hold a conclave and elect a new pope — with no caveats.
The issue, of course, is the travel restrictions.
Italian quarantine rules per se will NOT apply since the Vatican is its own independent sovereign state.
There is NO airport at the Vatican, but there is a helipad. So, cardinal electors could be choppered in from a nearby country that permits air travel — e.g., Croatia.
As I have repeatedly pointed out in my various ‘conclave’ books there is NO minimum quorum for a conclave. NONE. But, there is the sacrosanct two-thirds majority requirement. So, just 3 electors will suffice. It would not be difficult to muster 40 cardinal electors in/around Rome — at any given time.
Pope John XXIII was elected in 1958 by 51 electors. So, you don’t need 100+ electors to elect a good pope!
The current Dean, 85-year old Giovanni Battista Re would make a good caretaker pope. I think most electors will agree that he is trustworthy. Angelo Scola, 78, might be a great compromise — a cross between a caretaker and ‘normal’.
So, those, per I, are the only 4 meaningful and relevant scenarios.

It is all going to be A-OK.
About bloody time — wouldn’t you say?
What was he waiting for? Christmas?
I am NOT even going to ask why God needs to be asked.
Wasn’t God AWARE?
Possible. Did God too think it was a hoax?
All this stuff with God is very confusing to I.
Christians tell me, repeatedly, that God does NOT micromanage and that God gave ‘us’ free will. Wel …
So, why hasn’t it stopped already?
Shouldn’t the pope have asked for God to cure those stricken as well.
I am going to start counting days to see how long it takes God to take action.
Everything is going to be A-OK.
The 13 Cardinal Designates, Announced By Pope Francis, For The October 5, 2019 Consistory — By Br. César J. Tobón, L.C.
Another incomparably well-designed new-cardinal graphic by Br. César J. Tobón of Colombia who has provided us with a similar, and much appreciated, graphics ahead of other cardinal creating consistories and whenever there has been major changes to the Roman curia. His beautiful work is always a joy to behold and an honor to present.
Here is a link to the official Vatican announcement. That will help with the names and titles:
I had to smile. You have to smile.
You do not have to go all the way back to the Galileo trial. Gregory XVI (1831 — 1846) banned railways from the Papal States calling them calling them chemins d’enfer (road to hell), a play on the French for railroad, chemin de fer (iron road).
Yes, popes have a storied history of being very perturbed by all things new and modern.
So, this should not come as a surprise.
But, it still made me smile.
