I Got Myself A Google ‘Pixel 5’ To Replace My 13-Month Old ‘Pixel 4’ & I Continue Using ‘Google Fi’ As My Carrier.

First & so far ONLY Picture With My Google Pixel 5.
Straight out of my ‘office’ window.
Though I still take as many pictures as ever, & post at least 7-a-day, I have basically stopped using a dedicated camera — though I still have two ‘new’ Panasonics.
So, if my phone has become my camera THEN I have to stay on top of camera technology. While I appreciate that the Pixel 5 did NOT offer much of an upgrade re. the camera, it is still new camera hardware & software. Plus, Google gives me a 24-month, 0% APR deal.
PLUS, I wanted to go back to a fingerprint reader!
2020 was a REAL bad year to have ‘face recognition‘! Why? Masks!
After saying that setting up the fingerprint reader was one of the few hiccups with the new phone. I finally managed but it took quite a few tries.
I also had trouble downloading the ‘Google Fi‘ APP from the ‘Google Play Store’. Other than that, it was a breeze.
Impressed.
So far, so good.
Actually bought TWO Pixel 5s — one for one of my daughters too.

Android 10 (On Google Pixel 4) WILL NOT Support External USB Storage!
I spent 10-hours today trying to get my Google Pixel 4 (running Android 10) to recognize USB attached storage.
WOW!
It is basically said to be a SECURITY improvement.
Yes, Yes, Yes. I went into ‘Developer Mode‘ & enabled USB Debugging & set the USB options. I did it multiple times. No joy.
Works find with my Google Pixel 2.
Yes, I looked at multiple posts & YouTubes. Yes, I tried with a PC too.
I want to be able to backup photos from my Pixel 4 when I do NOT have Wi-Fi — i.e., when I am travelling in the wilds. Was NOT really an issue when I used cameras. I would use multiple SD cards. That way I could minimize what I would lose if I lost/damaged a camera or card. Basically trying to duplicate that with the phone. IF I drop my phone from a cliff on my 2nd day hiking I would rather NOT also lose all my pictures from Day 1. Makes sense — right? There is always method to my madness.
Looks like USB attached doesn’t work.
So, now going to look at Wi-Fi storage — with a built-in ‘hotspot’. I will keep you posted. SMILE.

The offer from the ‘Google Store’ I couldn’t turn down.
First Pictures of the Day with Google Pixel 4.
This, believe it or NOT, is but the 2nd (as in ‘second’) smartphone I have ever had! The Google Pixel 2, that I treated myself to at Christmas 2017, was my first. So, this was my first time transitioning from one smartphone to another. The only part that I was leery about was how things would work out with ‘Google Fi‘. Of late, I have had some issues with ‘Google Fi’ transactions and support and as such had fears that transferring my number from the Pixel 2 to the Pixel 4 might be problematic and that ‘Fi’ would force me to get a new number. Not so. That went very smoothly. I was glad.
Superficially, other than the unmistakable camera ‘cluster’, the Pixel 4 looks very much like the Pixel 2. But, that is deceiving. Quite different animals, both in terms of hardware and software — though I had Android 10 on my Pixel 2. The latest Android on the Pixel 4 doesn’t have the ever-so familiar ‘<< (back) & ο (home)‘ buttons on the bottom. You swipe-up for home. That works and I got used to that easy enough. I, maybe, even like that. ‘Back’ is more problematic. You have to SWIPE ACROSS the screen and, in my experience, it is hit-or-miss. I need to look into that further.
The camera works. That is ALL I can say for now. Pictures are ‘OK’. Haven’t seen anything spectacular as yet. But, at the same time, I have also only taken less than 30 pictures.
Pairing with my Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Titanium has been a HUGE problem. Very disconcerting. Yikes. Hope I can sort that out.
Face detection is cute, but also hit-and-miss. I re-registered my face. Might have to do it again.
So, therein lies the first 1/2 day so to speak.
