The New Garmin Fenix 6(X) [August 28, 2019], With Its Leather Strap, Reminds Me Of My MARQ Expedition.

by Anura Guruge

Amazon’s PREMATURE Listing From Monday, August 12, 2019.

Click to ENLARGE. Quality is not good. Sorry.

Amazon (if you remember)
did EXACTLY this also
with the Garmin Forerunner 945;
i.e., ‘accidentally’ listed it
weeks before it was announced.

Read about that here — if you have forgotten about that leak.

My Garmin MARQ Expedition
with the CHEAPER Garmin Leather Strap.

I don’t wear the $250 strap daily. But, I do like a leather strap.

Yes, it is the strap that makes me think the Garmin Fenix 6 (and the usual ‘S’ and ‘X’ variants) looks like my MARQ Expedition — but part of that is that I am using the cheaper $60 Fenix 5 leather strap on my MARQ so as not to ruin the expensive MARQ strap.

But, the Fenix 6 is going to be DIFFERENT from anything else we have seen from Garmin. It is going to have a 1.4″ display — compared to the 1.2″ on prior watches of similar ilk, including the Fenix 5X Plus. That is BIG. Very BIG. I like that. But, (damn) no AMOLED again. That irks me, though I have to admit that the sunlight-visible, transflective memory-in-pixel display on my MARQ is pretty impressive and pleasing. The Fenix 6 looks like it will have this technology, just on a bigger screen.

I initially thought that the Fenix 6 would be a watered down MARQ Athlete — with a leather strap. But, having studied the Amazon picture, long and hard, the Fenix 6 does not have the MARQ bezel.

It, with the exposed screws, reminds me of my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus (that I traded-in for my MARQ).

I am pretty sure that from a hardware standpoint — i.e., the all important sensors — the Fenix 6 will use what is now found in the MARQ/Forerunner 945. That should be pretty good.

The rest, from what I can see, is ALL software! That means much of it, if not all of it, will be also available on the Forerunner 945, MARQ and possibly even the Fenix 5 Plus. Garmin does that. Think back to ‘Fall Detection‘. This is good.

The new software features, viz., Grade-Adjusted Pace Monitoring and ‘environmentally adjusted’ VO2 Max, seems pretty esoteric. We have seen the other features, music, Pulse Ox, maps on other models.

I was surprised by the $950 price tag — albeit for the 6X model. That still means a Fenix 6 will probably be in the $800 — $850 range. That is premium pricing (and that coming from one who is wearing a $1,750 MARQ).

The Forerunner 945, at $600, will probably end up with all the software features — but without the BIGGER display.

I will keep you posted over the next few weeks.

Yes, I will get a Fenix 6 for evaluation. SMILE.

I will also do another post on Garmin leather straps.

The New Garmin Forerunner 945 Obsoletes The Fenix 5 Plus In Terms Of Features.

Amazon ACCIDENTALLY
had it listed this morning.
(I got a heads up.)

It is no longer there. I managed to grab a screenshot.

Click to ENLARGE. From around 9:20am (Eastern) this morning. It is NO LONGER there on .com or the UK site.

Click to access the ‘Pocket-Lint’ article from this WEEKEND.

The Garmin Forerunner 945 is scheduled to be announced tomorrow — April 30, 2019.

It was accidentally listed on Amazon.com, this morning. (See above.)

It has been talked about as a rumor for weeks and ‘Pocket-Lint’ wrote about it this weekend. (See above.)

The new Garmin Forerunner 945 includes all of the Fenix 5 Plus functionality and more.

So, the FR 945 will have: music, pay & maps.

It will also have: high-resolution display, Pulse Ox (blood oxygen saturation levels), Incident Detection, Heat/Altitude acclimation, Advanced Physio Metrics & 3rd Generation HR sensor.

Water rating is 5 ATM as opposed to 10 ATM — but I am NOT a diver.

It will be priced at $599 and, of course, it will be a plastic body.

Price of the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus already reduced at Amazon to $599 to match that of the Forerunner 945!

Fenix 4 is available for $499.

So, why is my Fenix 5 Plus 2nd best?

Well the FR 945 is better in terms of features.

Why … 4th best.

Well there is the huge Fenix 5x Plus … and the MARQ!

A couple of weeks ago I needed some flowers delivered to a patient at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon.

I had no idea as to who could do this. So I just called up the DHMC switchboard and asked them. They must get quite a few of these calls since they gave me the answer right away.

They told me that they no longer had a florist ‘in house‘, but the florist that was there was the ‘Garden of Eden‘, in Lebanon, and that I should call them. They gave me their phone number, viz. 603-448-6000.

I checked them out on the Web. Seemed reasonable and decent. I called. Very helpful. Very nice. I placed an order.

It was delivered that afternoon. I gather it was a very impressive and pleasing arrangement. So I was glad. Money well spent.

So a call out for them.

If you need flowers sent to DHMC or Dartmouth College or thereabouts … call them.

It was far from packed, but it was fun. They forgot to do any PR on it. So nothing appeared in the local papers. Essentially word of mouth within the Taylor Community. It was my fourth time there in 5 months. Nice people.

Kids had fun and they thoroughly appreciate the very fine, and free, cookies.

I hadn’t had time to look at this presentation let alone think about it prior to drive over to Laconia. So, as I am wont to do, I winged it. Good that I still have s few brain cells left to enable me to do that. once I start talking it all just comes out.

New presentation at the New Durham Library (N.H.) this coming Thursday, at 7 pm, April 17, 2014. Max, the librarian there, wanted to do it on the eve of Easter. Makes sense.

The presentation.

IF you want more pictures.

Thanks.

This is a PDF version of my (restraintly-animated) 26 slide PowerPoint for my “Pope John XXIII” presentations — Laconia, Alton, New Durham and Gilford.

I am sticking with and staying true to my trademark ‘3 minutes per slide’ formula that I successfully used for 30 years and probably upwards of 400 presentations. I don’t have any notes. Have never used notes when I do a presentation. Something that was drummed into me BEFORE I was a teenager! Yes, I had done a bit of public speaking and debating by that time, at school, but I, for one, had NO IDEA that I would end up spending much of my working life (which was albeit short because I am really a lazy bugger) on my feet doing public seminars (for gain). It served me well. Became part of the reputation. “That bastard stand ups and spouts for hours never looking at any notes or consulting anything”.

Of course people resented me for that. I, as I have often pointed out in these posts, was blessed — and I don’t know why. I had some amazing people, come out of the woodwork, to help me …. I am sure I have mentioned his name before, but let me say it again. Steve Kane of ITT. I interviewed with him for a job as a consultant at ITT Data Systems in early 1980. Per the amazing ITT culture (that I privileged to enjoy for 3 glorious years) much of the interview was conducted at an upscale Italian restaurant, in Cockfosters (I kid you not), London over many glasses of wine. Steve was a pivotal influence in my life. Though I, like him, was an ex-IBMer, until I started working for Steve I was not in the habit of wearing white shirts per the IBM legend. He came from IBM sales (where you had to wear a white shirt everyday) and I came from IBM R&D (where you were allowed to work in your shorts provided that it helped). For the next 30 years, thanks to Steve, I only wore white shirts — french cuffed and with ‘AG’ monogrammed on the sleeve. It became part of the image — along with the cowboy boots. Who has ever heard of a darkie Sri Lankan who was known for wearing fancy cowboy boots.

Anyway, Steve told me at my very first interview, that ‘of course’ he was going to hire me. And he did and we had a GREAT TIME. Steve had a degree in psychology. He was a very gifted man. I wish I had 1/1,000,000,000 of Steve’s people skills, charm and his ability to mesmerize the ladies. WOW. Anyway, on our walk back from the Italian restaurant, after he had already told me he was hiring me … and we had even picked the ITT company car that I was going to get (a Ford 2L Cortina) he said, out of the blue, and it shocked me: “you know … people are going to RESENT YOU … they will resent you here for what you are and what you are making … but people will resent you ALL YOUR LIFE”! BINGO. The part about people resenting me at work, at ITT, had to do with me being hired as a consultant … with a company car, private office and a fairly decent salary BECAUSE I was never cheap. That I could fathom. But, the part about people resenting me for the rest of my life was NEW and sheer GENIUS. Steve, as ever, was right. Thank YOU Steve, my mate. Steve is mad at me right now — because my memory alas is better than his. Yep, he also resents me. He, and I am SORRY, didn’t want to be reminded of our past. Yes, we LIVED — and did we, by heck. We were blessed. This is why, how hard I try, I just can’t wipe that silly grin off my 60 year old face. WE LIVED.

Anyway, thank YOU, Mr. Steve Kane. You are a genius and that you made billions while I struggle to survive proves, conclusively, that YOU are and were, always, GENIUS. One of the cleverest people I ever had the fortune of knowing. Thanks to YOU, Steve, I tell youngsters, and have for 30 years, that they should get their first degree in psychology — because you are living proof of what a ‘psyc’ degree can do for YOU.

I am blessed. But, so is Pope John XXIII — though soon, like in exactly 2 weeks, he will go from being BLESSED to be being SAINT.

…..

The Alton Gilman Library presentation is the 3rd of four presentations that I will be doing to coincide with the Pope John XXIII canonization on April 27, 2014.

The first is at Taylor Community, in Laconia, on April 13.

Second at the New Durham Library on April 17.

Then this in Alton. The last, to date, will be at the Gilford Library on May 8th.

So glad to see that the Sun butchered my name. If they got it right it would have worried me. It might have shown that they were paying attention — heaven forbid.

Yet another slide from the presentation 26 slides in total (per my trademark 3 minutes to a slide standard).
