I am so embarrassed that I had never heard of the ‘INTERNATIONAL Appalachian Trail’ thought it has been around for over 30-years. What makes it worse is that during that time I have hiked small sections of the AT & living in New Hampshire I am very much in AT country.
Yikes, & to make it worse I heard about it on Facebook — albeit in the ‘Maine Hiking‘ group to which I belong. I had to ask them ‘how & why’ AT became ‘International & as ever they were very polite & helpful.
So, I wanted to make sure YOU knew about it.
So, I made further inquiries. Yes, of course, you need a passport to cross the Canadian border — & YES, the border is still closed because of COVID.
Thought you will find this useful & interesting.
Yes, I liked the Royal Blue passports. They were distinctive and distinguished. You felt proud to hand over your British passport.
I guess the new ones, in 2019, will NOT have the windows or the stiff cover. That is a shame. But, it will be Royal Blue and I for one will NOT be blue to possess one.
But, this is still a long ways out; 22-months. Much can happen in that time.

As with any renewal, e.g., my recent NH driver license renewal online, I am sure there are number of variables way beyond our comprehension and knowledge. Of course, as it says up front on the Web site, spikes in renewal volume will certainly slow down things, though I am not sure what causes the spikes (maybe popular travel periods like Christmas).
I have heard that it can take 5 weeks or even longer.
In my case the whole process, from when I shipped out all the documentation from a FedEx office, to when I got the new passport took 25 days; July 26 to August 20, 2012.
The new, ‘electronic’ passport, with an embedded chip to expedite processing when going through suitably equipped immigration facilities (which looks quite snazzy and is a tad smaller than the last one) arrived by DHL — signature required. The passport, as they now repeatedly tell you, came directly from the U.K.
My supporting documentation, including my old passport with the corners cut off, was delivered, signature required, by the Post Office two days later.
