PBS Masterpiece “Dark Angel” With “Downton Abbey” ‘Annie’ Is Quite Compelling — Though Disturbing.

by Anura Guruge

It aired on Sunday, BUT I am sure you can still find it on reruns on PBS or definitely online.

Compelling, period-piece story. The sheer quantity of deaths, especially of children, is a downer.

But, Annie makes up for it and it is kind of funny and strange to see her wantonly fornicating.

Definitely worth watching. Just one episode from what I can tell. I still have it on my DVR.

IF ‘they’, i.e., PBS, told us that ‘Home Fires‘ Season 2 will end last Sunday with Episode 6, I missed it.

This weekend I kept on looking for it. Then worked out that it must have ended. A quick Web search confirmed that.

Wow. Episode 6, quite literally, ended with quite the BANG! So there will most likely be a Season 3 — though it might not be for a long time. There was a 17-month gap between Seasons 1 and 2.

Episode 6 should be available online.

Just wanted to make sure you did not miss it.

“Victorian Slum House”, A New Reality Show That Just Started On PBS (From BBC 2), Looks Interesting.

by Anura Guruge

YouTube trailer.

I, somehow, missed the trailers for this on PBS — despite watching at least one PBS show, e.g., “Home Fires“, every week.

Just heard about it when I got an e-mail from PBS — saying that it is available online.

First episode was screened May 2, 2017. So, I should be able to find a repeat — ‘on air’. I will look when I am next in front of my big TV.Hom

Looks interesting. Maybe it is too depressing to watch for long. But, certainly worth a look to begin with.

PBS Masterpiece “Home Fires” Is BACK, With Season 2, After 17-Month Gap!

by Anura Guruge

Season 2 Episode 1 is AVAILABLE, FREE, Online.
At the PBS homepage.

What Season 1 looked like.

We got thoroughly hooked “Home Fires” Season 1 in the Fall of 2015. Preferred it to “Indian Summers” which also premiered at the same time.

Of course my cup of tea, but what was neat is that Teischan (then 9) loved it.

Had kind of forgotten about it since it has been so long. Then happened to see that Season 2 was starting this past weekend. DVRed it, of course. Watched it Wednesday, April 5, evening.

It was good. Nice, Downton Abbey-like, storylines. Very warm and cozy.

If you are an Anglophile this will be magical. Can’t wait for Episode 2. So many familiar faces.

I recommend it with gusto. Plus, it appears to be available online. So, go for it. You will thank me.

How Long To Renew A ‘Green Card’ (I-551) In 2016 — 2017? About 5.8 Months.

by Anura Guruge

greencard

Got my new Green Card, valid till 1/19/2027. I was relieved and happy.

It took 177 days from online application for renewal (along with the (now) $450 processing fee). 5 months and 24 days. Not bad. Just short of six months.

I had applied for renewal on August 1, 2016. I had meant to apply two weeks earlier. My 2007 Green Card was set to expire on 1/12/2017. You can’t apply for renewal more than 6 months ahead. I had ‘lost’ 2-weeks and essentially applied 5.5 months prior to expiration.

Within 10-days I had a letter with my fingerprinting appointment — on August 26, 2016. So that wasn’t bad. 25 days into the application.

I had my fingerprinting done in Manchester, New Hampshire. A new facility (closer to Bedford) than the one that I had visited 10 years ago. Very nice. Very slick. Very friendly. It was a pleasure. The lady who did all the ‘biometrics’ stuck a neon, hightech sticker on my existing Green Card and told me that it was now valid until May 26, 2017. 9 months out! I was kind of shocked. I asked her whether it could take that long. She smiled and said that sometimes it does and that they just give themselves leeway. I was hoping it would not take that long.

It did NOT. I am impressed and happy. Very smooth and slick process. It even came with USPS tracking — though the envelope was very innocuous. I am happy and proud about the tracking. That was my suggestion from 10-years ago and I had been assured that they would look into that. They had. IMPRESSIVE.

So, caveats as to how long it might take. So mine took 5 months, 3 weeks and one day.

But:

  1. I have had a Green Card for 30-years, and as such they know me quite well. Yes, since August 1986.
  2. I tend to stay in one place for relatively long periods and had been at this house for over 9 years when I applied in August. That minimizes the searches they have to do.
    ….
  3. I do not have a criminal record! That, I am sure, helps because I do know that they run some elaborate fingerprint searches.

So, that is as much as I can tell you. Hope that helps. 6 months, as a rule of thumb, sounds good.

The new card is AMAZING. High tech beyond imagination. Wow. No, I am not going to post an image of it. {SMILE}

P.S., They are concerned about it being read wirelessly! Will have to see what that is all about.

“Dartmouth College Library” Has An Outstanding, Extremely Handy ‘Ask A Librarian’ Service.

by Anura Guruge

When you live in the sticks as I do (or for that matter in most parts of New Hampshire) it is not that easy getting to a LARGE, academic library.

And there are some things that you still cannot access online. {SMILE}

This morning I needed something ‘eyeballed’ at a library and going to my ever so friendly local library would not have helped.

I was hoping I might be able to send in an e-mail inquiry. So, I started with Dartmouth — because I have nothing but utmost respect for them.

Wow. Better than e-mail. Online Chat.

And WOW again. Were they helpful. Online …. bang, bang, bang …

Looked it up for me, both in print and with one of their SUBSCRIPTION services. I was thrilled and amazed. What service.

I have the answer.

One thing that AMUSED me. Dartmouth does not have a copy of the original, first edition, 1928 “Oxford English Dictionary“. They only have the 2002 edition. No doubt, at some stage, somebody threw away the 1928 edition as obsolete. Shame.
