The ‘Notre Dame’ Fire Has Parallels With The 1984 Fire At ‘York Minster’ (Also A Cathedral).

York Minster‘ is one of my FAVORITE cathedrals in the whole world. Though called ‘Minster’ it is a bona fide cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of York. The ‘Minster’ refers to it having been a scholarly missionary teaching church way back. I have spent a lot of time in this Minster, sometimes going for evensong in the evening.

I left the U.K. in 1985. So, I didn’t get to visit it right after the fire.

But, I visited it often between 1989 and 1999. It was pristine by then. I don’t think the damage was as extensive as what has befallen Notre Dame. But, I could be wrong on that.

So, there is always hope and with money, perseverance and skill you can restore these old MARVELS.

The Tragic Notre Dame Fire Brought To Mind One Of My Favorite Books “Is Paris Burning?”

by Anura Guruge

One of my favorite books. My adoptive father, an avid reader and author, who lived in Paris for nearly 20-years, told me about it in the 1970s. I read it. Loved it.

I invariably keep a couple of copies of it, at home, in case I want to give one to someone who I know will enjoy it.

So, on Monday, April 15, 2019, for obvious reasons, this book was much on my mind. It is ironic. The title of the book “Is Paris Burning?” is what Hitler supposedly asked his Generals as they were fleeing from Paris — the Allies rapidly bearing down on the City. Hitler wanted Paris burned. His Generals disregarded his orders!

So, what Hitler failed to do …

After getting hooked on this book, I went onto this, by the same authors. I will confess I like ‘Freedom’ more than I do ‘Burning’, BUT they are both brilliant, compelling books.

New York’s Cardinal Dolan, Re. Notre Dame Fire, Again Confirms Why He Is NOT Considered An Intellectual.

by Anura Guruge

Dolan, Dolan, Dolan.

You have to feel sorry for him. God was NOT kind to him in the intellectual stakes. But, he has done OK. Lives like a Railway Barron and looks like one too.

Too bloody late for ‘Our Lady’ or for ‘God’ to intercede.

Plus, does he REALLY THINK they need to be asked. Don’t they know? Doesn’t God spend most of his day, in ‘Executive Time’, watching Fox News on a 600′ TV?

They could have STOPPED this from happening.

Oh, Dolan. Oh, Dolan!

You are a treat.

This is a tragedy. Intercession should have happened BEFORE the tragedy.

Notre Dame Fire: I Sure Hope It Was But A Tragic Accident — BUT, Where The Heck Was God?

by Anura Guruge

First and foremost, I sure hope that it is nothing more than a tragic accident.

I hate to even think that ….

Yes, yes, yes. I know all about ‘Free Will‘ and how God does not micromanage what happens on Earth. I am an expert on that.

But, where the heck was God?

This is why I am an unbeliever and always have been. Also, why I refuse to pray — to anybody.

If, God or the Virgin Mary will not intercede to save Notre Dame it is unlikely that they will jump to my aid when I bust a knee.

One other thing.

The Paris fire department had NO CONTINGENCY plans for this?

Jesus. That seems irresponsible and incompetent — when for the lovely French.

As some of you know I love cathedrals — albeit, I am shamelessly biased towards the beautiful British Cathedrals.

That said, I am quite partial to Notre Dame. I have visited it MANY times. Remember I lived in Paris for 1-year, and my parents lived there for over 15-years.

This is a shame.

NO we can’t rebuild it to its original glory. We no longer have the skills.

Redoing in glass, which I know the French will look at, is NOT going to cut it.

A sad day for us. Kind of like a 9/11 — though without, luckily, the loss of life.
