The New ‘Polar Vantage V’ Sports Watch — Good Looking, But I Am Still Keeping My Garmin Fenix 5.

by Anura Guruge

Its announcement last week, by Polar, had slipped under my radar. I did NOT see it on any of my news feeds and most of them go out of their way to keep me abreast of new smart watches. That actually might have been the issue. Polar is positioning it, squarely and uncompromisingly, as a ‘Premium GPS Multisport‘ Watch. I only heard about it when a contact in the industry send me an e-mail.

I had a quick look. Sure looks nice. I like the display.

But, from what I can see, and I only got to spend a few minutes with the spec., it is not exactly a head-to-head Garmin Fenix 5 competitor.

For a start, from what I can see, it does not have a gyroscope. And to that end I notice it does NOT mention open water swimming.

There is also no mention of stress monitoring. Not a biggie, but something I use.

I might, with luck, get a chance to check it out. That would be interesting.

Its price puts it firmly in Garmin Fenix 5 territory.

Interesting. I have never owned or worn a Polar but I know that it is popular among the diehard crowd.

Sony a9 Is Announced And The Rumors Were Right — The $4,500 Is An ‘Hail Mary’!

by Anura Guruge

So it is cheaper than what was rumored (i.e., $6,000) BUT that is no consolation.

The $4,500 (U.S.) just for the body puts this well into the ‘Professional Only’ category.

Yes, I could get one IF I wanted BUT I can’t justify that price to MYSELF let alone anyone else — and it is the fact that I can’t justify it to myself that matters.

It is funny but I rarely use multiple-shot shutter bursts! Just one of my many foibles. I wouldn’t know what to do with 20fps.

So, looks like I will be getting a Sony a7II soon. {SMILE}

Another Disturbing Post Of ‘B&H’ Supposedly Selling A Used Sony As New.

thread on “DPReview” Forums.

Such posts, which appear on a regular basis, always distress me.

Appears it is a widespread practice in the U.S. — and this is why the likes of Sony don’t put seals on new cameras!

I am sure that over the last 3 years I have ended up getting a used cameras as new.

This is my continuing nightmare.

Which is why of late I try to buy only from Amazon who claim to eschew this practice though there are those that claim Amazon is as guilty as others.

Just a heads up.

This appears to be a widespread problem. So be aware, very aware.

Sony Has No New Camera Announcements At CES 2017 In Las Vegas.

by Anura Guruge

ces

They announced 7 cameras in 2016 — which included the Sony a6500 in October and the a6300 in February.

I guess the next ‘biggie’ will be in March 2017.

Just a heads up for the Sony fans re. CES 2017.

New Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5 — Not Convinced It Is Worth $601 More Than A Sony a6500.

My comparison of what I look for in a camera.

I could be wrong but I don’t see the justification for the added $601.

IF it was APS-C or Full-Frame — yes.

But, darn it — it is a Four-Thirds sensor. Panasonic appears to be playing the same game recently played by Olympus with the much anticipated OM-D E-M1 Mk II. That too was priced, body-only, at $1,999.

I think the Four-Thirds vendors are HOPING that a $1,999 might make their cameras look better. Not sure that that is going to work.

Yes, the Panasonic GH5, at the end of April, with a new version of firmware, is supposed to get some groundbreaking video features. That has zero value to me.

I just can’t see paying $2,000 for a 20MP Four-Thirds body. Period!

It would be competitive if it was $1,400 U.S.

Camera Manufacturers, Like Sony, Helping Retailers Sell Used Cameras As New.

This thorny but waxing issue continues to linger and persists.

Yes, it is a problem for all sides. People, including I, return cameras. Retailers and manufacturers do NOT want to lose too much money on returned cameras.

But, there has to be a better, more equitable solution.

Fuji cameras, at least when I bought my Fuji X-E2s, in May 2016, came inside a sealed bag.

But, as can be seen from the Forum posts folks still have concerns.

Sony, for a fact, do not provide ANY seals on their cameras or lenses.

This, of course, is to HELP the resellers.

At a minimum all cameras, above say $450, should come sealed, in a sealed bag inside a sealed box.

There should also be a (hard to reset) shutter actuation count that can be displayed.

Otherwise we will continue to have this problem.

The supposedly new Sony a6000, I got from Amazon, albeit from ‘Cardinal Photo‘, had a shutter actuation of 19. And I will admit that that is a strange, hard to reconcile number.

I am dreading getting the Sony a6500. What will I see in terms of shutter actuations.
