“Brain Meditation”: The Purest Form Of Meditation — My Latest Initiative.

by Anura Guruge

If you are even vaguely familiar with whom I am you may know that over the years I have, at various times, been an acknowledged expert on IBM networking, popes, comets and orgasms. I have also written books on all those topics (as well as about dwarf planets and asteroids). That I was able to master these diverse topics, without undue difficulty, had to do with a technique I started to practice over 40 years ago.

It all has to do with the relationship I have with my brain — rather than anything to do with ‘intelligence’. I do not consider myself an intellect. I have dealt with, worked with and lived with folks that were so much cleverer than I that I know the difference. So this technique is about cleverness. It is about getting the best of the IQ you already have. It is about getting the best from your brain. It is about creating a ONENESS between you and your brain.

About 3 years ago my son, the entrepreneur, suggested that I should document my technique. At that juncture I used to call it “Befriending Your Brain“. It is actually a VERY EASY technique to master and practice (which is why I was so successful with it). You do not have to devote any dedicated time in order to “do it”. It is all done, on-the-fly, in “timeshare” mode — while you do other things, like brushing your teeth, driving to work, ‘relieving yourself’, taking a walk.

Anywho, when I started writing the book — which is now finished — I realized that what I actually have is a meditation technique, a very powerful one at that. Brain Meditation. So let me please give you an initial preview.

A couple of weeks ago I needed some flowers delivered to a patient at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon.

I had no idea as to who could do this. So I just called up the DHMC switchboard and asked them. They must get quite a few of these calls since they gave me the answer right away.

They told me that they no longer had a florist ‘in house‘, but the florist that was there was the ‘Garden of Eden‘, in Lebanon, and that I should call them. They gave me their phone number, viz. 603-448-6000.

I checked them out on the Web. Seemed reasonable and decent. I called. Very helpful. Very nice. I placed an order.

It was delivered that afternoon. I gather it was a very impressive and pleasing arrangement. So I was glad. Money well spent.

So a call out for them.

If you need flowers sent to DHMC or Dartmouth College or thereabouts … call them.

It was far from packed, but it was fun. They forgot to do any PR on it. So nothing appeared in the local papers. Essentially word of mouth within the Taylor Community. It was my fourth time there in 5 months. Nice people.

Kids had fun and they thoroughly appreciate the very fine, and free, cookies.

I hadn’t had time to look at this presentation let alone think about it prior to drive over to Laconia. So, as I am wont to do, I winged it. Good that I still have s few brain cells left to enable me to do that. once I start talking it all just comes out.

New presentation at the New Durham Library (N.H.) this coming Thursday, at 7 pm, April 17, 2014. Max, the librarian there, wanted to do it on the eve of Easter. Makes sense.

The presentation.

This is a PDF version of my (restraintly-animated) 26 slide PowerPoint for my “Pope John XXIII” presentations — Laconia, Alton, New Durham and Gilford.

I am sticking with and staying true to my trademark ‘3 minutes per slide’ formula that I successfully used for 30 years and probably upwards of 400 presentations. I don’t have any notes. Have never used notes when I do a presentation. Something that was drummed into me BEFORE I was a teenager! Yes, I had done a bit of public speaking and debating by that time, at school, but I, for one, had NO IDEA that I would end up spending much of my working life (which was albeit short because I am really a lazy bugger) on my feet doing public seminars (for gain). It served me well. Became part of the reputation. “That bastard stand ups and spouts for hours never looking at any notes or consulting anything”.

Of course people resented me for that. I, as I have often pointed out in these posts, was blessed — and I don’t know why. I had some amazing people, come out of the woodwork, to help me …. I am sure I have mentioned his name before, but let me say it again. Steve Kane of ITT. I interviewed with him for a job as a consultant at ITT Data Systems in early 1980. Per the amazing ITT culture (that I privileged to enjoy for 3 glorious years) much of the interview was conducted at an upscale Italian restaurant, in Cockfosters (I kid you not), London over many glasses of wine. Steve was a pivotal influence in my life. Though I, like him, was an ex-IBMer, until I started working for Steve I was not in the habit of wearing white shirts per the IBM legend. He came from IBM sales (where you had to wear a white shirt everyday) and I came from IBM R&D (where you were allowed to work in your shorts provided that it helped). For the next 30 years, thanks to Steve, I only wore white shirts — french cuffed and with ‘AG’ monogrammed on the sleeve. It became part of the image — along with the cowboy boots. Who has ever heard of a darkie Sri Lankan who was known for wearing fancy cowboy boots.

Anyway, Steve told me at my very first interview, that ‘of course’ he was going to hire me. And he did and we had a GREAT TIME. Steve had a degree in psychology. He was a very gifted man. I wish I had 1/1,000,000,000 of Steve’s people skills, charm and his ability to mesmerize the ladies. WOW. Anyway, on our walk back from the Italian restaurant, after he had already told me he was hiring me … and we had even picked the ITT company car that I was going to get (a Ford 2L Cortina) he said, out of the blue, and it shocked me: “you know … people are going to RESENT YOU … they will resent you here for what you are and what you are making … but people will resent you ALL YOUR LIFE”! BINGO. The part about people resenting me at work, at ITT, had to do with me being hired as a consultant … with a company car, private office and a fairly decent salary BECAUSE I was never cheap. That I could fathom. But, the part about people resenting me for the rest of my life was NEW and sheer GENIUS. Steve, as ever, was right. Thank YOU Steve, my mate. Steve is mad at me right now — because my memory alas is better than his. Yep, he also resents me. He, and I am SORRY, didn’t want to be reminded of our past. Yes, we LIVED — and did we, by heck. We were blessed. This is why, how hard I try, I just can’t wipe that silly grin off my 60 year old face. WE LIVED.

Anyway, thank YOU, Mr. Steve Kane. You are a genius and that you made billions while I struggle to survive proves, conclusively, that YOU are and were, always, GENIUS. One of the cleverest people I ever had the fortune of knowing. Thanks to YOU, Steve, I tell youngsters, and have for 30 years, that they should get their first degree in psychology — because you are living proof of what a ‘psyc’ degree can do for YOU.

I am blessed. But, so is Pope John XXIII — though soon, like in exactly 2 weeks, he will go from being BLESSED to be being SAINT.

The Alton Gilman Library presentation is the 3rd of four presentations that I will be doing to coincide with the Pope John XXIII canonization on April 27, 2014.

The first is at Taylor Community, in Laconia, on April 13.

Second at the New Durham Library on April 17.

Then this in Alton. The last, to date, will be at the Gilford Library on May 8th.

So glad to see that the Sun butchered my name. If they got it right it would have worried me. It might have shown that they were paying attention — heaven forbid.

Yet another slide from the presentation 26 slides in total (per my trademark 3 minutes to a slide standard).

‘Old Spice’, ‘Brut’ Or ‘Bay Rum’ As Aftershave Astringents & Aroma.

Anura Guruge, June 8, 2013.

This morning watching MSNBC we discovered that ‘Old Spice‘ was back in circulation due to a very cute and clever viral video on YouTube. Deanna just loved it — though nearly all of her experiences is mainly with daughters.

Click to access IF you haven't seen it. It is quite funny and cute.

oldspicebottle112What amused me about this new interest in ‘Old Spice‘ was that of late, and by that I mean the last 3 months (or so), I have been occasionally using ‘Old Spice’ as an aftershave. A few months ago I, with a penchant for collecting old bottles, saw an old, classic ‘Old Spice’ bottle, more than likely at the (ever delightful) Alton dump swap shop, and picked it up. It was not empty. It was nearly full and it smelt authentic and ‘good’. Well aftershave doesn’t spoil plus I have very thick skin. So I put the bottle on my bathroom sink and use it — not every day, but maybe a few times a week. I have used ‘Old Spice’ in the past but I was never into it — much. I wasn’t that enamoured with its smell.

brutFor as long as I can remember ‘Faberge Brut‘ was my goto aftershave, definitely in my 20s, 30s and 40s. The green bottle, with the suspended badge, was very much a part of my life. I, of course, remember the ‘tall’ brown box, just like in this image. I think the Brut had to do with me having been a ‘Diplomatic Brat‘ in the 1970s. There are certain things whose prices are kind of upside down if you can get them ‘duty-free’ at true, diplomats-only prices — ideally from a specialized store (such as in the UNESCO building in Paris) or from a specialized catalog. Brut must have been ‘cheap’ duty-free, as was good caviar. When I was attending University in Swansea in the early 1970s I could get caviar for cheaper than I could buy cans of sardines. So I would have bottles and bottles of caviar sent to me. I think ditto for Brut.

I had really not given much thought at all to my affectation for Brut until I got an e-mail, in 2001, from a lady who wanted to determine whether I, like her, had worked for Wang, at the iconic Wang Towers in Lowell, MA. She had seen me on the Internet and was trying to place me. Her description of me was: ‘were you the guys who always wore a three-piece suit and smelled of Brut. Us secretaries always knew you were around from the Brut …’. To begin with I was mortified. I had not realized that Brut had become a trademark. Then I started laughing. Well, that had to have been me. The three-piece suit reference alone was a dead giveaway. At that time I lived in three-piece or double-breasted suits from London. So, after I got that e-mail I went and checked. I didn’t have any Brut! Next time I was in Manchester I stopped and got a bottle.

I don’t have any Brut right now either — and that is OK. Deanna used to get me men’s fragrance, usually ‘Perry Ellis’. I think I still have three bottles, of light blue stuff, in various stages of use, in the bathroom. Yes, women have told Deanna that her husband smells good. I am glad — though I am also known to take the occasional shower, whether I need it or not.

BayRumDuring the last 5 years or so, old age having crept in, nostalgia played a major role in my life. I used to remember the Bay Rum they used to put on my head, in Ceylon, after a hair cut. I always liked the smell of Bay Rum. Very robust and masculine. I went looking for Bay Rum. Of course, thanks to the magic of the Internet, you can find anything. I have been using this ‘Ogallala‘ (and what a name) ‘Bay Rum‘, from this blue bottle, for the last few years. I can use it on my hair and on my face. Twofer. I really do like the smell. Yes, I also have a bottle of ‘Brylcreem‘! Yep, this nostalgia thing has bit deep. I am the retro man, 1950s all over again.

I have NEVER relied on aftershave as an astringent. As I once heard, famously, slapping your face alone does as well. I am sucker for LOTION. For 40 years, without fail, day-in, day-out, I used ‘Oil of Olay‘ original on my face. I still use some form of lotion on my face everyday, without fail. I can’t face the day without it. So, the lotion takes care of the skin conditioning. So, for me, the aftershave is just for the smell. For now, I am cool with the Ogallala Bay Rum. But, now that I am thinking of it, I will have to get some Brut and start buying some old, iconic Brut bottles on eBay.

From a 1988 Wang marketing brochure ‘Wang on Networking’. Guess which one I am. And PLEASE don’t ask me about my other hand. It is but a bad optical illusion. I got so much ‘shtick’ for that when the brochure came out. None of us saw the proofs. I now dread that I probably intoxicated that poor lady with my Brut!
