‘My’ ‘Navajo Nation’ Decimated By 940 COVID Deaths To-Date!

by Anura Guruge

There wasn’t, because they were so persecuted & hunted down, that many to begin with — and by that I am only going back 18-months or so. Yes, they don’t help themselves when it comes to their health. Obesity & alcoholism & with that diabetes is epidemic. It is very, very sad. AND now COVID.

They can’t afford to lose this many, this quickly. Many, by nature, will be ‘elders’. With them we will again lose more culture, expertise, local knowledge & wisdom.

I wonder how many ‘Canyon de Chelly‘ guides MIGHT have died. Wow. I am trying to find out. Not good.

Please, at a minimum, share a THOUGHT for them.

Happy Thanksgiving 2020 While I Think About My Navajo & Their Holiday.

by Anura Guruge

Happy Thanksgiving 2020.

COVID-19 or NO COVID-19 many of us have more to be THANKFUL than others. Yes, at Thanksgiving I can’t but help think about my Native Indian brethren, & in particular the Navajo who I am extremely fond of — & can relate with.

So, don’t get high & mighty & jump on your high horse & accuse me of trying to spoil your Thanksgiving. SMILE.

Think of it in a more charitable way. SMILE.

Do you think THEY are Thankful?

My Greetings from last year.
Detect a theme? SMILE.

“More Than Frybread” (2011) Movie On Amazon Prime — Cruel, INSULTING Satire; Made Me Sad & MAD.

YouTube trailer

Because diabetes in endemic among the Native Indians in Arizona; with at least 20% of my beloved Navajo suffering from diabetes — with another 75,000 (minimum) suspected of being pre-diabetic.

Frybread & diabetes.

To make it worse, there is a segment, early on, when one of the contestants berates two of her coworkers for having an unhealthy lunch & reminds them of THEIR diabetes! Irony. Her doing the shouting — & her doing the frybread cooking — is borderline obese, if NOT outright obese. She probably has diabetes too.

Made me so SAD.

These POOR people.

They lack education, insight, MONEY & resources to understand & control DIABETES. I know. I have spoken to Navajo about it. I have bought them fruit.

It is a HUGE problem & FRYBREAD does NOT help.

That is what makes me so MAD. The last thing these good, decent people need is Frybread.

So, SAD.

“Woman Walks Ahead” Movie (2017) — The New “Dances With Wolves”; (It Is That Good).

The actual portrait of ‘Sitting Bull’ she painted.

The book. Click to ENLARGE.

Click to ENLARGE and read here. She, Caroline Weldon, was a real person, an actual painter. Movie is based on a TRUE story though the movie takes some poetic license. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Weldon

Dances with Wolves” is one of my favorite movies and one of the few that I have watched multiple times — once quite recently.

So, for me to equate this 2017 movie to that has to mean that it make quite the impression upon I — and it sure did. Powerful and poignant. Immaculately shot and produced. Palpable.

My weekly e-mail from Amazon on its recommended Prime Movies had it at #2. Caught my eye. When I read the description and it said ‘woman painter‘ and ‘Sitting Bull’ I was hooked. Art and native Indians — two topics dear to my heart. I was hoping to watch it with Teischan (12) but it had a ‘R’ rating. I can see why.

So, I watched it on my own. I was riveted. Great movie but an even greater story. Oh, WOW. Man’s inhumanity to man — especially the poor Indians.

Definite, definite ‘must watch’. You will thank me for it.

It will touch your very core.
