Last Time Easter Was On April 21, As In 2019, Was 1957 — 62-Years Ago.

Easter, your quintessential ‘movable feast’ can fall between March 22 (since it HAS to be after the Spring Equinox) and April 25 (i.e., essentially the 28-day lunar month).

So, this year’s April 21 Easter is at the further end of the range.

As with last year, we again have a 62-year gap. That is quite the coincidence.

Another coincidence. Last year’s April 1 Easter was the first such Easter as of 1956. This year, first April 21 since 1957.

I have as yet not been able to work out why we get a 62-year gap … as between 1956 and 2018 and twice in prior years. The 68-year confounds me even further.

11-year gaps for such ‘movable holidays’ is common — the 11 having to do with the 7-day week and leap years every 4-years. As you can see we do get 11-year gaps quite often, just not the last time around. 35-year gaps are fairly common too.

But, 62- and 68-year are the LONGEST possible gaps for Easter.

When Easter Sunday Has Fallen On ‘April 1’, “April Fool’s Day” — Last Time Was 1956.

by Anura Guruge

The sea change Gregorian calendar was introduced in October 1582.

Easter Sunday fell on April 1 two years later in 1584 — which, coincidentally, was also around the time the notion of “April Fool’s” kicked-in. One theory is that around this time, in France, the start of the New Year was moved from ‘April 1’ to ‘January 1’. Those who got confused by this move were referred to as April Fool’s. That, however, is one theory.

I have as yet not been able to work out why we get a 62-year gap … as between 1956 and 2018 and twice in prior years. The 68-year confounds me even further.

Last Time Passover, Rather Than Easter, Fell On ‘April 1’.

by Anura Guruge

Easter, this year (i.e., 2018), falls on Sunday, April 1. That is perfectly fine in that it is well within the March 22 to April 25 window for Easter.

The only this that is STRANGE, very strange, is that Easter has not fallen on April 1 in 62-years! Last time was in 1956. That is the LARGEST gap between Easter falling on the same day, in this case, April 1.

So, I was curious as to see when Passover has begun on April 1. The window for Passover is March 21 to April 20. So, again, April 1 is very much within the range. As you can see from the graphic the last time was in 1988 and before that 1950. That was a 38-year gap. The 2026 also happens after a 38-year gap. Neato.

Last Time Easter Fell On “April 1” Was 1956 — And That Is NO April Fool’s Joke!

Easter, of course, is your original ‘moveable feast‘. It can fall between March 22 and April 25.

So, Easter falling on April 1 is indeed possible.

It just has NOT fallen on April 1 since 1956. That is 62-years ago,

That means Easter on April Fool’s Day will be a first for many.

Just letting you know. Yes, I will do more Easter posts in the coming weeks.

Just wanted to get this out.

Think about. Last time — 62-years ago!

P.S., 62-years is about the LONGEST GAP you can have in terms of Easter falling on the same day of the year.

2017 Jewish Passover Just 4-Days Ahead Of April 14, Good Friday — cf. Last Year’s 28-Day Gap.

Chart of the gap between Passover & Good Friday
1990 – 2025

Given that the original ‘Friday’, the basis for Good Friday, occurred on or around the Jewish Passover it should not come as much of a surprise that Passover and Good Friday can occur close together — sometimes even on the SAME DAY as was the case in 2015 & 2012 and WILL BE the case, two-years running, 2018 & 2019.

But given that Easter is your classic ‘movable Feast’, based on both a Full Moon and the Spring Equinox, there can also be large gaps, as much as 28-days as was the case last year, i.e., 2016.

But this year they are just 4 days apart.

Passover: Monday, April 10, 2017.

Good Friday: Friday, April 14, 2017.

Easter Sunday: Sunday, April 16, 2017.

Easter 2017 On Sunday, April 16 Is Later Than The Last 2 Years.

Easter, of course, is your original ‘moveable feast‘. It can fall between March 22 and April 25.

This year, i.e., 2017, it is towards the later end, April 16. Last year it was considerably earlier. But, in 2014 it was on April 20 — even later. 2011 was towards the very limit at April 24.

Since 1777 Easter has fallen on April 16 elevenĀ (11) times prior to this, viz.: 1786, 1797, 1843, 1854, 1865, 1876, 1911, 1922, 1933, 1995, 2006. S0, the last time was 11 years ago. The 11-year cycle is quite common and you will see it 8 times in that sequence. Then, in between, you have some huge gaps of 46, 35 and 62 years. This is not unusual either.

Next Easter on April 16 will again be in 11 years, i.e., 2028.
